SOTU 2012: Warren Buffett's Secretary, Debbie Bosanek, To Attend Speech

Sotu 2012 Warren Buffetts Secretary

The Huffington Post   Posted: 01/24/2012 11:06 am

Warren Buffett's longtime secretary, Debbie Bosanek, will join First Lady Michelle Obama in her box during Tuesday night's State Of The Union address, according to a tweet by White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer. "Tonight President Obama will offer more details on the Buffett Rule," he adds.

Obama unveiled the "Buffett Rule" last September as part of his deficit-reduction plan, proposing a minimum tax rate for millionaires, who often pay a lower effective tax rate than middle-class workers. Buffett, the billionaire chairman and chief executive of Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway, called on Congress in August to raise taxes for those earning $1 million or more, and even more on those earning $10 million or more.

Buffett's secretary was mentioned by the president in a September speech. "Warren Buffett's secretary shouldn't pay a higher tax rate than Warren Buffett. There's no justification for it," he said. "It is wrong that in the United States of America, a teacher or a nurse or a construction worker who earns $50,000 should pay higher tax rates than somebody pulling in $50 million," added Obama. She's also a private person -- though she fields scores of press requests for Buffett, she doesn't do interviews.

Buffett said that he pays a lower tax rate than any other staffer in his 20-person office.

The "Buffett Rule" is likely to be a hot issue in the 2012 campaign. GOP candidate Mitt Romney released his tax returns Tuesday, which revealed that he and his wife paid a 13.9 percent tax rate on $21.7 million in income, entirely from investments, mostly capital gains. Obama paid a 23 percent effective rate in 2010.

For nearly a year Americans have been aware of Warren Buffets secretary who pays a higher tax rate than he does. She has been the subject of the argument for raising taxes on the rich. Just like the statistics of soldiers that died or were wounded in Bush’s unnecessary war in Iraq, Americans could never connect with this image that seemed blurry and vague. Now, by not only putting a face to the image and  Read More...

Using the secretary's tax rate is totally off-base because we do not know what her effective tax rate is. Has she released her tax returns? All they have is her tax bracket, but the tax bracket you are in is seldom what your effective tax rate is especially for incomes under say $150,000/yr. So unless she releases her tax returns for all to see, the President and others should not use her as a political tool.

And it's out now the POOR thing makes upwards of $500,000 a year... How does she possibly manage? I mean, she's clearly just a normal American barely getting by. Except she just purchased a 2nd home, like most Americans.

I'm not a fan of any politician but lets make an observance about the difference between Mit Romneys 13.9 % tax and Obamas 23%. Mr Romney still paid more tax than Obama earned that year.

Obama is going to be hard to beat because he wants to give all the money from working people and future generations of tax payers to the bums who don't work at all. He's popular like the favorite grandparent who always spoils you with handouts. Those bums wil not be at work on election day so they'll have the time to vote him in for another four years of freebies. With half the country not paying any tax at all who do you think they will vote for.

Obama was raised on food stamps, free education and never held a real job in his life so it does not surprise me that he wants to perpetuate that kind of life for other Americans.

You want to be a bum, then vote for the bum.

He's Muslim endorsed as the president most likely to destroy the American way of life..
01:21 AM on 01/25/2012
I think we're doing a pretty good job of destroying our own "way of life."
06:19 AM on 01/25/2012
You are right. Times have changed but not for the better. The dumbing down of America has Obama in front of it greasing the downward slope in front of us. He is not completely to blame but he is where the buck stops

Have you ever thought that 536 (president and congress) people who are mostly all financially well of run our country. With all their financial know how why can't they balance a budget. Special Interest and favors I suspect.

I'm biting. Warren Buffet is exactly who he says he is. He's over 80 & if he had some deep dirty secrets - they'd be getting aired like everyone else's. You might want to do some research before talking trash. He's on the cover of a recent Time magazine.
12:59 AM on 01/25/2012
Mr. Obama you are wrong. The view that wealthy Americans are able to bear more of the tax burden, or should bear more of the tax burden of this county is based on the false supposition that they've always been wealthy - when in fact the very opposite is true. These wealthy Americans have made personal sacrifices, led disciplined lives, and made wise choices over a long period of time to earn their wealth. And no, it is not shameful that Warren Buffett's secretary pays a higher tax rate. Ask yourself - how many jobs has Warren Buffet's secretary created? Who has created more economic value that best serves our national economy? Why would we encourage a system that penalizes this effort? Rather, we should reward the efforts of Warren Buffett (and others) that has built a company benefiting millions – including his secretary.

01:37 AM on 01/25/2012
I have worked my entire adolescent and adult life and along with others have over the years built, developed and sold companies that now collectively employ upwards of 2,000 people. My present company founded in 2002 currently employes 85 people. I am certainly well off but far from being in the 1-percent. All of our employees have company paid health and life insurance. Not100-percent paid, but largely paid. Each employee makes a small monthly contribution. I get frustrated and angry every year when I have to deal witht the insurance people about rising insurance premiums -- up 25-percent the last two years in a row -- and accountants at tax time, but I get over it because our people are worth it and the "bottom line" is, our employee turnover is virtually zero and our after tax net has grown by more than 10-percent every year since our third year of business. Do I want to pay more taxes? Of course not. Can I and my business afford to pay a little more? Yes we can. Will I willingly pay more taxes to fund another ridiculous war in some godforsaken place we're going to eventually leave anyway? Hell no! Will I pay a few more bucks to help dig the country out of debt. Absolutely, and I think anyone who won't is a traitor. I'm a liberal. You're a conservative I presume. Figure that out.
09:41 AM on 01/25/2012
That is a refreshing, clear and honourable statement of the truth. Thank you.

There is a crazy, but very pervasive, idea that it is the conservatives who create all the jobs. It is not true, it never has been true, not back to the Industrial Revolution.

The truly lasting companies have in fact very often been founded and sustained by employers who placed the welfare of their employees very high in their thoughts.

At the end of a hard working day, who would anybody put in an extra half-hour's unpaid overtime to help, to complete a necessary task - the liberal who knows your name, or the conservative who just sees you as market-fodder?

Has anybody ever asked why we have so much debt?

Could it be that we waged 2 wars without putting it on the books during the Bush years?

Could it be? Oh, and plus the Medicare prescription bill? When are we going to wake up and stop blaming the wrong person?

If one man makes more in one day than 75% of the people in this country and pays less taxes, we have a problem.

Especially when "debt" is the big issue.

I must be wa-a-a-y-y below the poverty line with you logic!! Buffet's secretary is rich, not poor!! Bill Gates only made $100K a year as CEO of Microsoft (he made his money in stock).
