Brad Pitt On Atheism & Hatred: Star Talks God, Genocide And Inequality

Brad Pitt

Posted: 01/25/2012 3:35 pm

Brad Pitt starred as a pious Christian man in the Oscar nominated-epic "The Tree of Life," but off-screen, a childhood spent in church pews have rendered him far from a regular congregant.

"I grew up very religious, and I don't have a great relationship with religion," Pitt tells The Hollywood Reporter in their new cover story. "I oscillate between agnosticism and atheism."

Pitt was open about his religious childhood while promoting the film last summer, telling Extra that he "got brought up being told things were God's way, and when things didn't work out it was called God's plan."

In 2009, the star discussed his unease with God, saying that he was "probably 20 percent atheist and 80 percent agnostic. I don't think anyone really knows. You'll either find out or not when you get there, until then there's no point thinking about it."

That, of course, doesn't mean Pitt doesn't have a higher purpose. As he tells THR, "I got really sick of myself at the end of the 1990s: I was hiding out from the celebrity thing; I was smoking way too much dope; I was sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut."

That changed when he took a trip to Morocco in the late-90s, where he saw "poverty to an extreme I had never witnessed before, and we talked about inequality and health care, and I saw just what I felt was so unnecessary."

It made him an activist, something he shares in common with his partner, Angelina Jolie. For more on the Oscar nominee's relationship with Jolie, his activism, his movies and more, click over to The Hollywood Reporter.

It still isn't easy in this country to admit to being atheist or agnostic. On the other hand if you claim stupidity, nobody thinks twice about it. Brad Pitt isn't my favorite actor but I do respect his approach to life. He is smarter than most.

I really like Brad Pitt and like some of his wonderful movies.
I'm really disappointed that he does not seek counsel of
the Word of GOD, The Bible, for himself at this time in his
life. If he would do so, it would speak to him differently NOW
than when he was a child. I would challenge him to read the
Word on his own and study SEEKING truth for now. Brad is
too successful to have no feel for a LIFE PLAN given to him
by GOD.

There seems to be a correlation between People raised in Fundamentalist Evangelical Conservative religions like the Baptists as children & Atheism. Though I'm traditional in my belief. That being I will marry in the church I was baptized in & will have my funeral there as well as have my kids baptized in it I will NOT be raising them in it. They will have the bible as well as the Torah & Quran They will be raised believing in god & Christ as their personal savior but have no "church" telling them HOW & WHAT to believe. The Problem is Organized religion NOT God.

Which stories? Malichi 2:3? She bears mauling children? Lot and his daughters? I want people to read the bible too, but without rose colored glasses on like you have. I think when people do, they will see it for the myth it is.

Babies being born without a second set of DNA, talking bushes and snakes. The sun and moon being treated as separate sources of light. An adult woman popping magically out of a man's rib. Yea, read it I wish more people would, instead of blindly swallowing what a preacher sells them.

some people, lots of people, marry the wrong person to begin with.
what do you suggest? honoring a sacred vow in order to live an unsacred life?
06:50 PM on 02/20/2012
His marriage in the 90's had him sitting on a couch smoking dope, at least his second relationship has seen him become conscience of that and encouraged him to contribute more to society. The first relationship was the wrong one. I think it's about time these millionaire movie people leave Hollywood and take a look around. He's trying to make a difference and he has the means to do it. I think that's pretty cool... cooler that spending money on giant houses and cars.

OK, so after decades of study, travel, investigating, reading, study, sharing in all types of belief systems, I now believe and have total faith, I AM god! Yup, I am 100% responsible for me, myself and I, the holy trinity. I am fully and solely accountable for my actions> I need not wait to drop dead to pay for my transgression's either, I suffer for them instantly. Formal religions all share a common thread and loads of man made fabrication to divide. However, lest you believe I am the most arrogant individual other than Trump on the planet, I've been humbled since experiencing an unsought episode which forced me to peer into the other side. LOVE, that is what is in the light, the purest most incredible and strongest most secure feeling of LOVE. Deny it as you will, whatever we are we all return to it and lessons. YOU are your God, take full responsibility for yourselves. Oh yeah, do a good deed now and then-I'll bless you for it. ;-)

YES, YOU ARE A BIT LIKE THE GOD BECAUSE IN THE HOLY BIBLE IT SAYS THAT
YOU WERE FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE......MADE IN THE SPIRITUAL IMAGE OF GOD; HE KNEW ABOUT YOU FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD......THAT IF YOU SEEK HIM YOU WILL FIND HIM IF YOU SEEK HIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART.....OF ALL THE "RELIGIONS" OF THE WORLD ....THERE IS ONE OF F A I T H.......GOD LOOKING FOR MAN AND RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM OVER MAN SEEKING FOR GOD AND NOT ABLE TO
FIND HIM.

THAT FAITH IS BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST OUR SAVIOR AND TRUE FRIEND.

PEACE BE UNTO YOU.

I've always like Brad. Now I like him even more.
Why do we have to have all this showy fakey religion in order to be good people? We don't.
Just be a good person. If everyone would just be a good person nobody would have to worry about anything.
There will always be bad apples but I don't need to go to a special building and be told by a special person (self chosen?) how to think, feel and act.
Organized religion has been the cause of most of the worlds problems since organized religion was created.

where did man come from...trees, animals, etc...? Please enlighten me.
08:11 AM on 01/28/2012
We evolved from prehistoric bacteria, beginning millions of years ago. All animals on earth share this ancient origin.

I feel sorry for Brad that he feels he's now
somewhere between agnostic and atheist.
He's obviously had a bad background with
"religion."

Brad.....let me tell you a little something.....
from one who also grew up in church.

When you become old and mature enough
to be able to distinguish between "religion"
(i.e., what man has developed) and actual
"faith" (what God intended), then you'll get
it. And it's the best thing ever.

Believe me......just think about it......

I am "Old an mature". The older I get the more I think belief in mysticism is just silly. I'm comfortable with just dying. I don't need some people telling me some fairy tail so I won't be afraid.

totalliberal, not only are you mature but very, very wise. Oh what nonsense spews from the pulpit but old and mature knows better. Give me a free thinker anytime over someone who follows this stuff but this is just my opinion and I grew up in the church as well. Then in my 20s, a minister betrayed me and a light went off in my head and I've never looked back.

I'm very spiritual but no god in my life.

I totally agree with you. No one needs to force their beliefs onto anyone...who cares if I believe what you believe - as long as you believe...isn't that what is supposed to matter? Or is there some petition you have to take to heaven with a certain amount of names on before you're allowed in...?

OK< I take back what I said ever about Brad Pitt protesting too much that he isn't a fame Hound dog....I think when fame hit him he was pretty young, and a deer in the headlights for many years. he seems to be making great strides coming down to earth and being level-headed....good for him....I honestly don't think God cares what our 'beliefs' are, if one is Present and kind and a good parent, and they give 100% in all they do, I believe that God would be pleased. How you live and how you treat others is what matters. Religion messes people up in the head, to a large degree....
04:08 PM on 01/27/2012
i think i am just like mr. pitt in this subject. and your take on things, i like too. i believe our creator created beings with growth for much intelligence but some just stagnate when they sense something unknown and scary. the rest of us continue growing and expanding and evolving to levels that the lemmings just can't get to. the fright they harbor keeps them from wanting to know more and keeps them at a level of fear that the become so dependent on this book to tell them what to do, think and believe...i mean it's like a star trek episode or twilight zone that some of these zealots live in. they believe they have morals and standards that everyone should live by and then get angry if you disagree...they are some pretty sad and pathetic humans in my book.

It is truly my pet peeve that Religion is more the problem in the world than the solution, but it is a subject like a mine field, people are so defensive and touchy and assume they are being persecuted. When people use the "books" to bolster their sense of "superior knowledge" and pick and choose from it in order to rationalize condemnation towards their fellow human, the book has become pure evil. What is more diabolical than evil hyjacking Religion? clever, really, as it ends up controlling good hearted and well meaning people. Morality is no substitute for integrity. Morality is normally used to judge others with airs of superiority, PU, while integrity monitors and corrects ones' self. If Godbot's had integrity, they would have no time for morality....don't get me started.

Helping the sick and the poor and living a life of equality and justice with all of God's other children means a whole lot more to God than any perfectly performed ritual, whether you believe in Him or not.

The Good Samaritan wasn't one of "the chosen people" nor did he belong to the Temple and tithe his income but in the eyes of the Lord, he was an example of good for the entire world.

Brad has nothing to fear from God's judgment. He and Angelina are expressions of His Love already, church pew ridges on their knees or no.
