New CNN Florida Poll Finds Mitt Romney And Newt Gingrich Neck And Neck

Florida Polls

WASHINGTON -- A new poll from CNN/ORC International confirms that Newt Gingrich has surged in Florida, but unlike some of the other polls released earlier in the week, it finds the former speaker now running neck and neck with Mitt Romney and suggests that Gingrich's Florida tide may be ebbing.

The latest CNN survey, conducted entirely after Gingrich's victory in South Carolina on Saturday using live interviewers, shows likely Republican primary voters in Florida divided between Romney (at 36 percent) and Gingrich (34 percent), with Rick Santorum and Ron Paul running far behind (with 11 percent and 9 percent respectively) and 7 percent undecided.

Although the full CNN/ORC sample is small -- just 369 likely Republican primary voters -- additional subgroup data shows that on Sunday night, Gingrich led by six percentage points (38 to 32 percent), but on Monday and Tuesday nights, Romney led by nine percentage points (38 to 29 percent). CNN's analysts conclude that Gingrich's momentum "appears to be quickly cooling off" after an initial boost following his victory on Saturday.

Those findings paint a somewhat different picture of the Florida trend than the Quinnipiac University poll released earlier on Wednesday, which showed Gingrich running six points ahead (40 to 34 percent) on interviews conducted after the South Carolina primary on Sunday and Monday.

Another live interviewer survey conducted on Monday and Tuesday nights by the American Research Group shows Romney leading by seven points (41 to 34 percent). Taken together with the results of a series of automated, recorded-voice surveys conducted earlier in the week, these results suggest that although Gingrich has clearly surged following the South Carolina primary, Romney may have rebounded over the last 48 hours.

Combining data from all the available public polls and calculating an aggregated trend line, as we do on the HuffPost Pollster chart shown below, shows a razor-thin margin, with Gingrich at 35.5 percent and Romney at 33.7 percent.

Whether the differences among the polls this week are based on real shifts among the voters or artifacts of differences in polling methodology, the wide variation in recent results is further evidence of the continuing volatility roiling the Republican presidential race. Like the Quinnipiac University survey released earlier, the CNN/ORC found about a third of likely voters saying they might still change their minds about the candidate they are supporting (25 percent) or are completely undecided (7 percent).

So don't be surprised if the polling snapshot at the end of the week looks different than it does right now.

An interesting story in today's Bloomberg: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-26/obama-wins-in-global-poll-showing-investors-resist-newt-gingrich.html Some excerpts: "The expectation in markets of every region is that Obama will be re-elected  Read More...

As an independant voter waiting to cast my primary and final vote for the next president of the United States, I had been enjoying the fact this year's GOP had so many diverse candidates. But, as each state primary is underway...another citizen candidate drops out. All unfairly forced out by party leaders via immorally and unethical communist party-like operating approaches. I once believed that interferring with democratic elections and allowing voters ourselves to decide our elected representative only occurred in China, Russia, North Korea and Iran...I guess not.

Newt's Ad: " Under Newt Gingrich, the economy was great, employment was great, low deficit." Did I miss something?? When was Newt President? Before he got kicked out, he was in D>C> during the Clinton administration. Or is he talking about WHO was under him...he can't remember all the broads he fooled around with.

Gingrich is teaming up with his seventeen million dollar donor Sheldon Adelman, an American Jew who is responsible for most of the ugliest propaganda against Muslims all over the world. We need to stop the feer mongering and the hate. There is no possiblepeace in the Middle East with dogs like Adelman screeching you must hate the Muslims. Enough already!

While Newt and Mitt are slandering each other, they are distracted from slandering Obama. Here's hoping this keeps up until August.

Newt is the smartest of them all, question is can he work well with others. Thats the problem Obama has and for the most part all the GOP congressmen have. We need politicians that work well together to get things done. Its been a long time since real work has been done in any part of Washington. We need a total overhaul.

You are taling of a STATESMAN ! there are none of those on this planet tht would run for POTUS. A real statewsman is too intelligent to allow theirself to get into this mess!! Anyone with the needed qualifications to be a great POTUS would be too smart to be involved!

A win in Florida for Gingrich hands the election to Obama. He has a very spotty unstable background and has trashed Capitalism itself.
The facts are Romney, a self made man, has what it takes in temperament, education business and governing experience to lead the country and turn it around.
I don't see big mouth Buffet stepping up to the plate to serve the country and taking all the flack that goes with it.
I for one don't want to see the president elected by who throws the most bombs or is the "coolest" as in Obama. We need a serious man now who is quiet dignified and can do the job.

Choosing a president should not be an American Idol contest. It was with Obama with his swooning voters over his "coolness". He had no qualifications at all to be president just a social justice mindset. He has nearly ruined the country with his ineptitude.
What we need now is a serious, successful man just like Romney who has the background and skills to get business going again and turn the country around.
Gingrich is a sideshow, pandering to one liners. He does not have the qualifications. A good debator doesn't mean he will be a good president. Lets get some common sense.

I don't think a background in business is what we need right now. We need a guy who knows economics intimately, not crony capitalism. It doesn't matter how "successful" Romney has been. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't exactly call him successful when it comes to sticking to his party or maintaining his beliefs. The guy has flip-flopped on so many different things, I don't trust him to be my President. However, I also think that Newt is just a creature that belongs under a rock...

Newt may have had an affair and resigned over it but he is still the smartest of this group and the most capable of winning debates against obama.. that i think is why everyone on the left is all over him trying to bring him down!! they dont really care that he had an affair outside his marriage... they sure didnt care in the 90s...

Yep. Scott rejected $2.4 billion for the high speed rail project which would have brought thousands of jobs to our Sunshine State. But then mandated drug testing for welfare recipients which would he would profit from through his Solantic Clinics. Scott is a total and complete disgrace

you know what really baffles me????? the same folks that are running Gingrich into the ground and saying what a terrible man he is for leaving his wife for another woman, are the same crowd that defended Bill staunchly when his affair was discovered... the hypocricy is staggering...

At the end of the day, Newt is still Newt.

Every once in a while he hits one out of the park, but 99 times out of 100 he swings and misses. His poll numbers spike after every home run and then slowly sink after every strikeout.
