Groupon Kiosks Hit Chicago Wednesday, Selling Geo-Localized Deals Across The City

Groupon Launches Kiosks Selling Localized Deals On-Site

Out-of-towners and smart phone abstainers, rejoice: online deal giant Groupon has partnered with a Chicago-based technology company to install kiosks around the city, allowing users to instantly purchase coupons to local businesses on the go.

Chicago hosts the company's pilot program, which launched Wednesday on an existing fleet of 30 SmartDIGITAL touchscreen kiosks, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Users will be able to access Groupon's daily Chicago deals and Getaways travel discounts, and the company's hyper-local Groupon Now! coupons will be optimized for each kiosk's location.

SmartDIGITAL CEO George Burciaga, a lifelong Chicagoan, says the company plans to have 100 kiosks operating in heavily-trafficked areas within 90 days, some of which will be Groupon-exclusive, according to Crain's Chicago. Current models also run CTA schedules and tracking applications, news content and interactive advertising.

"The ideal transaction occurs because you're walking by a [kiosk] and a commercial plays that asks, 'Have you had lunch yet?'" Burciaga told the Chicago Tribune. "When you touch the screen, it will show you hyperlocal offers around you right now."
