Mitt Romney Says It's 'Sad' For Newt Gingrich To Call Him Anti-Immigrant

Mitt Romney Immigration

After Newt Gingrich said on Wednesday that Mitt Romney shows "no concern for the humanity of" undocumented immigrants, Romney stuck back, accusing the former House Speaker of pandering to the audience of a forum hosted by Univision at Miami Dade College.

When asked by Univision anchor Jorge Ramos about Romney's idea for "self-deportation," Gingrich laughed and said the former Massachusetts governor was out of touch, as further evidenced by his overseas investments. Romney said the entire attack, including ads by Gingrich that call him "anti-immigrant," was "sad and inappropriate."

"I recognize that it's very tempting to come to an audience like this and to pander to the audience and say what you hope people will want to hear," Romney told Ramos. "But frankly I think that's unbecoming of a presidential candidate."

The Gingrich campaign announced on Wednesday afternoon that it will take down radio ads that accuse Romney of being anti-immigrant.

The Republican candidates are attempting this week to soften their rhetoric on immigration, in a bid to appeal to Latino voters in Florida.

On Wednesday, Romney defended his idea of "self-deportation," which he said would essentially make it so difficult for undocumented immigrants to find work that they would be forced to leave the country. He said Gingrich has previously condoned the idea, even though he is now condemning it.

Even when confronted with an undocumented woman who attended one of his campaign events and hopes to attend college, Romney remained on message, arguing against charging undocumented immigrants in-state tuition rates. He suggested that she try "a college that's not as expensive as others," perhaps even Miami Dade College, adding his "guess is it's not terribly exorbitant."

"I'm not punishing her," he said, in response to a question from Ramos about why he wants to punish the children of undocumented immigrants. "She can go to college. There's no requirement that she goes to a college that provides an in-state tuition break."

Romney said he has "compassion" for the children of undocumented immigrants, as well as immigrants abused by coyotes and legal immigrants waiting to enter the United States. Those legal immigrants are his first priority, followed by abused immigrants, he said. Undocumented immigrants who entered as children have done nothing wrong, he added, but did not say what he would do to help them.

Romney, whose father was born in Mexico, laughed when Ramos asked if he would be the first Mexican-American president. "I would love to be able to convince people of that, particularly in a Florida primary," he said. "But I think that might be disingenuous on my part."

At the beginning of the speech, though, he alluded -- perhaps accidentally -- to his own American citizenship, bestowed upon him by his parents.

"My parents gave me a lot of great things," he said in response to a question about how much money he inherited from his father. "They gave me the privilege of being born in this country."

Newt reminds me of some one , his stance, walk and facial exspressions, I know, Wimpi in the cartoon! I wonder what he wants today for payment on Tuesday! Did Wimpi ever pay his bill?

Romney has offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who hears Newt Gingrich utter a complete sentence without the use of personal pronouns.

Maybe, Newt is not paying attention. If E-Verify and other anti- ILLEGAL alien measures were enforced, many illegal families would self-deport, reducing their overall numbers. Reference Arizona, Georgia and Alabama.

Newt’s alternative of “guest worker†status, does NOTHING to address the massive burden on taxpayers. They get stuck with the bill for the majority of the “guest workers†social costs including education, health care, police, crime and incarceration. The employers get ALL of the benefits.

The whole GOP circus is sad. No vision for America. No stand for civil rights. No firm position on border security and illegal immigration. No resolution to reverse the flow of jobs and manufacturing expertise back into the United States. No commitment to limit the impact of litigation on healthcare, a key problem in reducing the skyrocketing costs that adds nothing to the quality of patient care. Ditto with reforming the healthcare insurance industry, which wants to cherry-pick only healthy people to cover rather than open coverage to MORE people and spreading the costs over more participants. No understanding of the significance to America's future of our leadership in space exploration, which generated billions of dollars in revenue and in new innovation and technology during the heyday of spaceflight. No understanding that government is an enabler, not a provider; it isn't the answer to our problems and is often an impediment. Don't "fix" things for us; get out of the way and let us fix them ourselves. The only thing, by the way, worse than the GOP? That would be the Democrats, who seem committed to turning this country into a mediocre socialist has-been within our lifetimes.

Maybe so, but no one would be wrong, Mitt for calling your Grand-father or Great Grand-father a criminal for Polyamy and escaping the law of the U.S. and then leaving Mexico, a coward, afraid to fight for his country!

Anyone else find it ironic that the GOP are courting ways to secure the Latino vote, while they argue about which of them can toss them out of the country the quickest...but nicely?

Yeah, yeah...that's the ticket!

As if BHO doesn't pander to the Latinos. "They", do not advocate "tossing out" Latinos, just the illegal ones. Get your facts straight...
11:17 AM on 01/26/2012
Exactly...it's just a question of who can do it quickest and "nicest" now.

The GOP is trying to toss Latino "citizens" out of this country? Spin, spin, spin. What do Latino citizens have to do with illegal immigration? Why would the Latino vote be affected by deporting illegals aliens?
09:58 AM on 01/26/2012
I don't like Newt Gingrich. He's "pandering" to the illegal alien crowd for the votes. We don't want or need all of these people here. Our country is BROKE and all old Newt cares about is VOTES!!! He is no different than 'THE ONE' we've got NOW!!! We need a leader that is "pro-America" not "illegal alien" oriented!!!
10:40 AM on 01/26/2012
“The illegal alien crowd†can’t vote. The American Citizens of Latino descent can vote and Newt will be wise to acknowledge this.
10:51 AM on 01/26/2012
Yes!!! Many of them vote Republican!!!!

Amen. I worry for our country everyday. It is very difficult in determining which one is the lessor of two evils.

Amen. I worry about this country every day. It is so difficult deciding between the lessor of two evils. Ronald Reagan, where are you???

I wish someone in national politics had the balls to say that we need to end all immigration for the next 10 years while the ones we have now learn to be citizens.

NEWT WILL IMPLODE . NANCY POLOSI HAS SOME DIRT ON HIM . AND IF NEWT GETS THE MONINATION .................SHE WILL BRING THE NEWS FORWARD . AND OBAMA WILL WIN BECAUSE OF IT . Another fine choice would be Santorum. Mitt has too much money and is not in the reality of life. I am neither a REP or DEM but the GOP needs a solid candidate. Newt is a loser, was not re-elected to his Speakers role, he is the biggest hypocrite going...he had the audacity to chase Clinton, and Newt is on his third marriage....and he wanted an open marriage. Once a cheater, always a cheater....he is a liar too. Then his gig with FREDDIE MAC FOR $ 1.7 million was a lobbying gig, not a historian role as Newt as stated. Newt is very greedy with an ego as big as his back side.

Obama was elected because he was warm and fuzzy, a gentelman with a good personality and the most beautiful and perfect wife. After 3 years of Obama we now realize that these were not valid reasons to elect a president.

Mitt Romney seems like a decent enough guy, good family man, successful business man, devout in his religious beliefs (whether you agree or disagree with his religion), turned a financial disaster in the 2002 Olympics into a financial success. Despite his several episodes of flipflopping he seems on paper to be the ideal candidate to defeat Obama.
However, his lack of charisma, stiffness and comparative debating skills to the silver tongued president make me wonder if he is the right candidate to defeat obama
10:03 AM on 01/26/2012
I think he can stand up to Obama. People seem to be "tired" of 'THE ONE' who has done nothing to improve the situation in this country. He has not protected our borders. Now...we have all of these "illegals" running in every day. The border is OUT OF CONTROL!!! We need someone to enforce the laws, and do what is RIGHT!!! Deport all illegals and for God's sake...SEAL THE BORDERS!!!
