Newt Gingrich Mocks 'Self-Deportation,' Predicts Big Win Among Latino Voters

Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that he wants to win at least half of the Latino vote in the 2012 general election. He has a long way to go.

Speaking with anchor Jorge Ramos at a Miami forum on top Spanish-language news network Univision, Gingrich said he expects to rise in the polls with Latino voters and do even better than his Republican predecessors, like President George W. Bush, who received about 40 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2004.

"I have a hunch that by this fall we may do better than any Republican except maybe Reagan," Gingrich said.

As Ramos pointed out, though, Gingrich "would lose the general election" among Latino voters, based on his current polling numbers. Univision and ABC News released on Wednesday the results of a poll, conducted by non-partisan polling firm Latino Decisions, that found that 70 percent of Latino voters would support Obama in a match-up with Gingrich, while only 22 percent prefer the former House speaker.

Yet Gingrich is making a major play for Latino voters as the Florida primary sneaks closer. The state has 1.5 million Latino voters, and winning the bulk of their support could help any GOP candidate pull out a victory in the Jan. 31 primary.

Gingrich's decision to appear at the Univision forum at all was a clear attempt to court Latinos, especially after he and other GOP candidates announced in the fall that they would boycott a debate to be hosted by the network, based on a claim that it treated Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) unfairly.

Wednesday's forum featured separate interviews with Gingrich, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) declined to participate.

But Ramos wasn't there to throw softball questions, and unlike at GOP debates, in which Gingrich is able to play on anti-media fervor, he faced a Univision host who is enormously popular in the Latino community.

Gingrich opened with a couple of sentences in Spanish, which Ramos brought up later when he asked about Gingrich's offensive statements about the language. Though Gingrich's campaign has run Spanish-language ads, he has called for English to become the nation's official language. He also previously said "Spanish is the language of living in the ghetto." (He later apologized, also in Spanish.)

"It wasn't about Spanish, I was saying that about all languages," Gingrich said on Wednesday. "English is a common, unifying language. ... In the United States if you are not conversant in English your commercial future is limited."

One of Gingrich's primary objectives during the interview seemed to be to draw distinctions between his positions on immigration and those of Romney. He laughed when Ramos asked him about Romney's statement on Monday that undocumented immigrants should "self-deport." Gingrich said the comment shows that Romney has "no concern for the humanity of people who are already here."

"Jorge, can I ask you a question? I mean, you're a very sophisticated observer and the most widely-watched analyst in Spanish-language television -- how close are you to breaking up laughing out loud at this fantasy?" he asked. Ramos laughed, but did not answer.

Gingrich is sometimes considered the most moderate of the GOP field on immigration, a stance that voters in states such as Iowa and South Carolina viewed as a negative but is seen as a benefit in Florida. But Ramos did not let Gingrich off the hook, pressing him on what he would do with the undocumented immigrants who do not fit into his narrow criteria for legalization.

Gingrich said only those who have been in the U.S. for 20 to 25 years would be eligible for legal status under his immigration policy, referring to "grandmothers and grandfathers."

"You're leaving out most of the undocumented immigrants," Ramos said. Gingrich responded, "Yes."

"So what would you do with them?" Ramos continued.

Gingrich explained that he would support a change in guest worker laws so that younger undocumented immigrants with fewer ties to the United States could also have a chance to stay -- another distinction that would allow for only a slim number to avoid deportation.

Ramos pointed out that Gingrich also opposes the Dream Act, which would provide legal status to some undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, provided they showed "good moral character" and attended college or joined the military. Gingrich said he only opposes part of the Dream Act and would support similar bills that only applied to the military, meaning enlistment would be the only option for young people who wanted to obtain legal status.

Gingrich said no Americans would support mass legalization -- a proposal that President Barack Obama and other Democrats have not suggested -- and then implied all undocumented immigrants crossed the border illegally.

"There are virtually no Americans -- if you go around this country and say to people, 'Hi, would you like to legalize 11 million people that crossed the border illegally?'" he said. "Jorge, you're never going to get that done."

Speaking the day before the Delaware primary, Gingrich hinted he was considering ending his presidential run:

"I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing," Gingrich said in an interview with NBC News during a campaign stop in Delaware. "We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night and we will look and see what the results are."

According to NBC, the former House speaker said he would need to "reassess" based on the results of Tuesday's primary in Delaware, a state where Gingrich has spent a great deal of time campaigning in recent weeks. Gingrich indicated that the state's 17 delegates were crucial to his viability as a candidate.

"Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that he wants to win at least half of the Latino vote in the 2012 general election."

"Hispanics are less likely to vote than other groups, even if citizen. In the 2008 election, only 7.4% of voters were Hispanic."

So what's that 3.2% of the total vote?

The poll by Latino Decisions shows that while Hispanics are currently less enthusiastic about Obama than they were in 2008, they prefer him to Romney by a 67 to 25 percent margin, and to Gingrich, 70 to 22 percent.

Among Latins who plan to vote in the Republican primary, the poll found Romney had a 15 point advantage over Gingrich, 35 to 20 percent.

He ask the question about Romney...does he think we're too stupid to collect the dots..same thing to you Newt. You must think minorities are stupid to even think of voting for you...delusion is only one of your problems if you actually believe your own rhetoric..

How can any Latino give their vote to either Newt or Mitt? They oppose a path to citizenship for all those children that were brought here when they were too young to make decisions, unless they agree to put themselves in harm's way by.enlisting in the armed forces. Is that the only contribution these young people can make in their eyes?

I don't see Mitt's boys showing THEIR 'love' of country by putting themselves in harms way-OH! Yeah! THEY are wealthy and will use ALL their millions to create jobs-whatever! All these rich hypocrites only have love of $$$$, includes Newt! Neither Newt and Mitt have core values. Their beliefs are whatever they think the audience at hand wants to hear.
Newt will be Isreal's president, not the US's. That is evident in the rhetoric he spews since his only donation to his super pac comes from Casino Mogul Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Israeli hardliners. Nothing against Israel, but, we are in the US.
These two candidates have millions in their superpacs from very few contributers. They could not raise these amounts from regular voters, so, the ads benefit the few wealthy contributers. Again, how can any Latino, or any minority, vote for either Newt or Mitt? Not rhetorical.

Latinos who abide by the law might vote for either of them. Why do you think many would not! Those here legally would rather, like most Americans, would rather see people come here legally. Why do you folks have hang ups about obeying laws?
03:18 PM on 01/26/2012
Well that is your opnion but keep in mind that the issue effects Latinos more closley since it includes their freinds family and nieghbors. why anyone in this country would vote for either of those two is a whole question. They have made it very clear that they plan on taking care of the rich and the lobbyist I for one think its the 99% who should be first to be helped. any vote for the GOP this election is a clear vote against the middle calls

"How can any Latino give their vote to either Newt or Mitt?"

Because most Latinos aren't even foreign born, and to think of all Latinos as "immigrants," and defined politically by immigration as a single-issue, is border-line racist, actually.

Because Latinos are hurting badly in the current economy, like many Americans.

The number of DREAM Act beneficiaries is between 800,000 and 2 million, among more than 55 million Latinos.

Supporting "half" the dream act is ridiculous. So we are going to force these American educated individuals to go back to their country to use the skills they learned or they can stay here illegally and probably not be able to get a job to use said skills. Makes perfect sense.

Being in the military is certainly a worthy enough act to gain citizenship. But so is becoming a productive and educated member of society, we need more Americans with those traits.

Given a standard Newt wants to impose, that those with good moral character would be permitted to stay, who decides? Certainly not Newt. If applied equally across the board, most members of congress would have to leave, especially Newt.

His hypocrisy is boundless.

Hell, he doesn't even have a moral compass.
01:43 PM on 01/26/2012
He and the rest of congress are legal American citizens! A distinction you seem to have a hard time comprehending.

While there have always been problems with the Mexican border and illegals Clinton made it worse with NAFTA. As far as Latino's that would be Carter for making the District of Columbia, the boat people and lets not forget Cuba. The problem has always been made bigger by the democrats so they have a reason to waste more of our tax dollars. Look at Eric Holder, why would you give illegals guns when you are fighting a drug war? To make the situation worse and try to blame it on the GOP. People better wake up, the Dems are not happy that they lost control.
12:48 PM on 01/26/2012
"Clinton made it worse with NAFTA"

And yet illegal immigration almost doubled under Bush.
03:37 PM on 01/26/2012
So why do ya think he was building a wall? To keep them here?
12:58 PM on 01/26/2012
Mexico isn't too happy with Holder over that. Those arms were used to kill about 250 police and many more civilians. But, to liberals, what do they care?! Right or wrong, they back Obama & Co (of which Holder is a part).

He's the lesser of two evils. That's why he's getting our support.

Latino's are going to view Newt as the "Man". The "Man" being someone who could and will cause them grief given a chance. Zero sympatico, and some fear. Unfortunately for Newt, this is pretty much universal across the spectrum of age, gender, race, etrc. He has his 10-20% who consider him the master of the universe, but, that will not win a general election. It appears the dem's will have to do very little to convince the voters to go with them again. The gop is doing all the work for them. Perhaps just run some debate clips with a message "If his own people do not trust him, why would you?"
11:24 AM on 01/26/2012
Totally agree! I keep asking myself, How can Latinos vote for these two candidates?
01:01 PM on 01/26/2012
In no way an I a Newtite, however, what makes you think Latinos don't want legal immigration? Are you saying they don't follow the law? (FYI: many believe marriage is between a man and woman & have stong family ties.)

Not at all, admire latino's work and family ethic. The point was directed to they do experience discrimination, legal, on the way to, or possibly even illegal. I was only talking about legal--able to vote. But, they know, have family members, etc that are not.
12:59 PM on 01/30/2012
And Gingrich believes marriage is between a man and a woman and a woman and a woman. Need I say more? Gingrich has the morals of a snake. Sorry to all you snakes out there.

"I have a hunch that by this fall we may do better than any Republican except maybe Reagan,"

He assumes too much. His hatred for President Obama has clouded his brain that hs is corrupt, adulttrous, racist and has no plan. Assuming the latinos will flock to him, he easily forgets his racist remarks that stay with voters.

The fact that he is even running for the nominee is shameful. I will never be able to accept his "wife" as a first lady.

1. Nancy Pelosi "has dirt on Gingrich." She keeps showing us who she really is. And I think she is preparing to be out of office, and is demonstrating what she would be good at, like writing articles for the tabloids.

2. If illegals want to becomes legal, they should start paying their taxes, and perhaps even their back taxes. And if employers have been paying illegals without claiming them on their payrolls, then they need to start paying their payroll taxes and their back taxes as well.
09:46 AM on 01/26/2012
More factially, the entire nation has dirt on Newt.

If they aren't working under the table and are getting checks, they are paying taxes.
12:49 PM on 01/26/2012
Illegals already pay taxes.

And the country benefits because the illegals can't get back those taxes.

Why is it that when people talk about illegals they mean Mexicans? Does anyone realize how many people come here from many other countries and cross in Canada or fly from their country and just dont go back?

Big difference here, none of those terms fit Obama. Second, part of Obama's win was the result of McCain screwing up and naming that dummy Sarah as VP. Biden is boring, but a solid VP.
