Bloomberg Announces 'Gossip Girl Day' In New York: Penn Badgley Wears '99 Percent' Shirt (PHOTOS)

Mayor Bloomberg loves loves loves it when TV shows and movies are filmed in New York. No surprise then that Thursday Hizzoner bestowed an unusual honor upon one Gotham-based program-- proclaiming January 26th in New York Gossip Girl Day, in celebration of the show's 100th episode.

Look! Bloomberg even XOXO'd a tweet:

And for a show fixated on the swanky lives of the decidedly 1 percent, actor and heartthrob Penn Badgley 'occupied' the stage at the presser for the award Thursday, wearing a "We are the 99 percent" t-shirt.

(Meanwhile, 26 of Badgley's comrades were being arrested during a protest in Brooklyn.)

Priceless photos of Bloomberg and the Gossip cast below:

This act will certainly be immortalized in bronze and will be looked at in awe from future generations!

Oooh, a celebrity wore a snarky t-shirt and stood next to a thrice-elected billionaire!
I'm still waiting for the headline that reads: "New World Order--fairness instilled across the globe as t-shirt changes everyone's mind."

Unfortunately, this was the best-planned event in the brief history of OWS. Indicative, if you ask me.

Wow, people are hating on this guy instead of applauding him on making Mayor Bloomberg look foolish for 1. making a day out of that bad show, and 2. having to stand next to a 99% t-shirt.

I don't care much for the show and don't know who the actor is, but c'mon...he's trying to keep the message alive no matter how much money he personally makes or how untalented he may or may not be.

Objective reasoning is what separates Occupy thinking from irrational Pro-Wall Street propaganda. So use it when considering trashing a supporter.

Apparently his "I Can't Act" shirt was in the wash...

Closing schools, senior citizens centers and he's spending time on this, yep he has his priorities start.

Good for PENN.
They all should have worn Occupy shirts for this phoney Mayor,
who defended his wealth, more than anything else by persecuting
the OWS, at Zuccotti Park. He was the one who gave the orders
to destroy their equipment, books, and learned that from history
with the Brown shirts who did the same thing. Beat on innocent
people, pen them and haul them away. That's what we all saw,
no matter how they cover the event and that's his legacy with
all that b.s. Money God.

Yes, because as history has proven, it's the message on the t-shirt that topples governments and instills world peace and financial equity.
(I wonder in which Third World sweatshop that t-shirt was made?)

History, my dear friend, has proven that once the government becomes
corrupt and supporitve of a few, it topples on its own, as in Rome.
Nero burned the city, trapped the poor inside its walls, blamed the
Christians, divided factions, and Rome still fell because of one
thing; "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely"
The symbol then was the fish, later the cross.

isnt it nice that basicially these pesky critters, OWS, are gone as it has dispersed into the air, like the circus act it was,a vile, arrogant, dirty, radical, subversive, and anarchists to boot, and i did not mention a congregation of dreggs from the far reaches of the USA who thought that this 1% could fool us hard working peopleas the media doesnt even take them seriously antmore for good reason, well except possibly the HP,which is a rag.

You do realise there are 464 occupy camps in the US? Right....? And that the media is part of the people and that is why you dont hear about them much. And that there are thousands of people in DC right now.. And that the cold air didnt slow them down, the police state did...

Katie, you are so right. People who think it's over are in for a big surprise! There are Occupiers all over this country! Those who think they're the only hard working people in this country, and that Occupiers are all lazy, dirty hippies need to turn off the television and get outside more!

He is wearing it in support to embarrass Bloomberg. It is better that he wore the shirt T-H-E-N, T-H-A-N if he never wore it at all.
