Three Florida Polls Show Mitt Romney Back In The Lead

Florida Polls

WASHINGTON -- After a remarkably turbulent week, a handful of polls released Thursday brought a new twist to surveys on Florida's Republican presidential primary: a consistent finding.

The new polls conducted by Monmouth University and SurveyUSA, Rasmussen Reports and NewMax/Insider Advantage all show Mitt Romney leading Newt Gingrich by margins of 7 to 8 percentage points among likely Republican primary voters in Florida. All three find Romney with 39 to 40 percent of the vote and Gingrich with 31 to 32 percent.

The new polls also continue to show Rick Santorum and Ron Paul running far behind in single digits, with Santorum a few percentage points ahead of Paul.

The three polls used an automated, recorded-voice methodology to reach Floridians on their landline telephones. The Monmouth/SurveyUSA poll added an additional sample of mobile phone numbers called by live interviewers.

Combined with surveys conducted earlier in the week using a variety of different methods, the data now yield a relatively consistent story: In interviews conducted over the weekend, just before and after Gingrich won Saturday's South Carolina primary, Gingrich surged into the lead in Florida. But in interviews conducted Monday through Wednesday, Romney rebounded to a lead of 7 to 9 percentage points (and that includes those interviews from a CNN/ORC International poll conducted on Monday and Tuesday nights).

The HuffPost Pollster chart, which attempts to smooth out the random variations that are inherent in polling, is struggling to keep up with the rapid twists and turns of voter preferences in the Republican race. Our latest update based on Thursday's new polls shows Romney leading Gingrich narrowly (36.1 to 34.5 percent) with Santorum (11.1 percent) and Paul (8.5 percent) far behind. Should the Romney rebound persist in future polls, his trend line will quickly shift upward to reflect the new results.

Every poll conducted this week has confirmed a surge in Florida voters' support for Gingrich compared to where he stood before the South Carolina primary. The more consequential question may be whether the larger bump measured over the weekend -- with polls showing Gingrich briefly ahead -- was real or an artifact of the difficulty of polling when the South Carolina results dominated newscasts. After all, if taken at face value, the run of polling suggests a net 17 percentage point shift from big Gingrich lead to comfortable Romney lead over just three or four days this week.

As always, those who follow pre-election polls should remember that a telephone interview amounts to something of an ambush. Uncertain voters who know they may have days or weeks to make a decision -- both about whether they will vote and which candidate they will choose -- are suddenly confronted with immediate questions: Are you likely to vote? And if the election were held today, for whom would you vote? The polls may be measuring answers that accurately represent the likely Republican electorate and are therefore consistent, but nonetheless reflect fleeting opinions.

Moreover, when news coverage offers a "one message environment," when it's all good news about Candidate A and bad news about Candidate B, the polls may show brief bumps in support for the candidate benefiting from the coverage. Something like that typically occurs during the presidential nominating conventions. Gingrich appears to have experienced just such a bump over the past weekend.

It is also worth remembering that, according to most reports, Romney's campaign and allied Super PAC have been spending huge sums in Florida, and those watching television or with access to the ad buy data report pro-Romney ads far outnumber those being aired by Gingrich and his allies.

Such a mix of advertising would be more comparable to what Gingrich faced in Iowa than what hit him in South Carolina and would explain part of Romney's post-South Carolina rebound -- something not yet evident in Gallup's national tracking poll.

Finally, recall that support for Gingrich turned on a dime following a nationally televised debate on Jan. 16. With another CNN debate set to air Thursday night, the current reading may turn out to be just the latest brief snapshot in time.

How many points did Nancy Pelosi take away from Newt with her threat of her big knowlege about him that she said she would spring on us? Then she retracted later after doing her damaged. I think she found the floor under the basement in her fit of having no class.

All I want to hear is that the people of the United States are winning. These stooges in DC are just getting in the way of our liberty. How many of them are promising this and that but will end up feeding us the same tired old excuses. I am for whomever REALLY works for us and not for wall street, George Soros, United Nations, the church or whatever. This is about us not the guy who gets a free room in DC. Plus all these creeps(except Ron Paul) signed or supported the Patriot Act and NDAA(both of which grossly violate our rights as American citizens. This country belongs to the people and we will have it back

Here's how it stands:

If Romney wins, this is the result of establishment Republicans telling the Tea Party, "Thanks for the votes in 2010, now F off." So there you go social conservatives, you were played like a fiddle.

If Gingrich wins, this is the result of Fox "News" deluding the right into thinking their extreme philosophy was somewhat palatable to the rest of the country. Also, Gingrich embodies NOTHING of christian conservatism. So there you go social conservatives, you were played like a fiddle.

If Santorum wins, [snort] hahahahaaa...... yeah, good going social conservatives, you really picked an electable candidate.

Why isn't more being made of Romney's "omissions" of at least half a dozen off-shore bank accounts on last year's and this year's financial disclosure forms?!?

It's looking like he closed that Swiss bank account in 2010 just so he wouldn't have to disclose it on his 2011 disclosure form, but he didn't do it fast enough. Apparently an interest payment of about $1700 popped up on his 2011 tax return and they found Romney never disclosed it in his 2010 FEC disclosure form. He also never mentioned the Swiss account on his 2010 SEC disclosure form. Whoopsie! I guess I can understand, though. Anybody who calls making $375K "not much" could certainly forget about an offshore account or a few. Blecch.

Obama-haters, i..e the GOTP base, will overlook this financial mischief, but I have a hard time believing that Independents will let him get away with it--especially when they really begin to study his tax plan and discover that his would add at least $600B to the deficit in tax revenue losses alone. Can you imagine the sh_tstorm on the Right if Obama did anything even close to this?

Just remember everyone has a freedom of speech and choice the American way and if we want to keep that freedom we better elect Ron Paul.

Paul is the only republican candidate that has a chance of beating Obama. He is running even with Obama in the polls but he will pull more independants and more democrats than any other candidate. Americans aren't voting for Paul, even though he is their first pick, because they believe the corporate medias lies that he doesn't have a chance. He has a chance folks. He is the only republican who does have a chance. Anyway, there is no difference between Obama and the top two bought and sold traitors, Romney and Gingrich. Vote Ron Paul.

All polls show Obama beating Paul by 8 points or so, but knock yourself out. They must biased, "mainstream media" polls, I guess?
