Julieth Arias Own Goal: Costa Rica Goalkeeper Makes Awful Mistake Against Canada (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/26/2012 9:13 am   Updated: 01/26/2012 9:45 am

At least Costa Rica was down 4-0 at the time of this own horrid goal..

Just minutes into the second half of a 2012 Olympic Games qualification match against Canada's women's soccer team, Costa Rica defender Marianne Ugalde received a pass outside the box and delivered a slow pass back to goalkeeper Julieth Arias. As the ball rolled back toward her, Arias took her eyes off it for a split second to look at one of her opponents jogging toward her net. The ball, meanwhile, trickled past her feet and into the goal, causing the announcer to scream "Oh no!"

"Well we've seen a few strange things in this tournament, but that probably takes the cake right there," the commentator said.

Scroll down to check out the own goal and vote on how it compares to some other humiliating own goals over the years.

Well, if there's anything positive about it, she can at least tell her grandkids that she scored a goal in an Olympic qualifying game.

Perhaps because nobody in America GIVES a rat's butt about what happens between two Spanish teams in a foreign league game! Do you think that foreign newspapers even reported the SCORE of yesterday's Lakers-Clippers game? Don't be absurd...

Well, here you go: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/nba/top-stories/NBA-Lakers-get-last-word-over-Clippers-in-inner-city-clash/articleshow/11638584.cms
The truth is that many Americans follow La Liga and many foreign nations have fan bases for NBA teams. So I do agree with the original poster that some coverage, however limited, would be nice.

HaHahahaaa, oh Bruce, what rock in NYC are you living under? Uhhh yes, many foreign newspapers report NBA scores, and many American newspapers report La Liga scores. Try reading something besides the New York Post for your "news", you might learn something about the world and about your country.

as for Soccer in the United States.................http://www.foxsportshouston.com/11/09/11/MLS-attendance-surpasses-NBA-NHL/landing_dynamo.html?blockID=599876

Last year one of ManU's highest scorerers was "own goal". No joke. It's part of the game, a drag but not really an anomaly at all.

Thankfully, she is in Costa Rica and not Colombia. In Colombia someone would have pulled out a gun and shot her dead for that embarrasing mistake. These people take there futbol seriously.

That's why you always pass back to the side of the goal.

Ouch. In a related story - one which I've yet to see on HP - USWNT is owning every team they've played so far. Their goal difference is something like 27. Way to go, ladies!

Their Goal diff. is 31! And guess who they have to beat to qualify. . . Costa Rica.
02:43 PM on 01/26/2012
Yeah, I wrote that before I heard about their 4-0 stomping of Mexico. Poor Costa Rica. ;)

If only the USMNT could pound Mexico 4-0...
