The 10 Most Marijuana Friendly Colleges: Princeton Review List (PHOTOS)

Posted: 01/27/2012 9:01 am

Although marijuana use may be on most college campuses, some colleges are certainly more "pot-friendly" than others.

Princeton Review recently rated the 10 schools with the most "reefer madness" if you get their drift. Colorado College topped their list with University of California--Santa Cruz coming in second.

Here's the list of colleges (in no particular order) according to the Princeton Review, where the campus attitudes towards marijuana are a bit more relaxed than the rest.

Which of the following schools do you think has the most relaxed attitude towards marijuana use? And is it a reputation that helps or hurts the college?

I second the previous post! Humboldt State should be one there. It's right there in the Emerald Triangle! Work in the industry helps students support themselves while going to school.

I will say as a reputation it hurts the school. I know of parents that wouldn't allow their kids to go there. Sad. It's a beautiful area and the school really excels in some of the sciences.

I'd have to say that Humboldt State should have easily made this list. And another that at least deserves consideration is Cal Berkeley. At Humboldt, marijuana is the largest agricultural enterprise in the area. And Berkeley, being within five miles of Oaksterdam is....well it's just Berkeley, nuf said.

I'm just wondering, many of these colleges also ban smoking on campus, so how can they be listed as marijuana friendly when the main method of consuming marijuana is through smoking?
10:25 PM on 02/06/2012
Well at UC santa cruz anyways its officially banned on campus (even with a medical card as they have to go by the federal laws not state laws) but in practice its impossible to enforce as the campus is basically in a redwood forest. (the picture shown here is a horrible representation of what the average part of campus looks like). So all the students have to go is walk outside to where there isn't many people around and its pretty much impossible to get caught. On top of that though everyone around town and on campus is pretty tolerant in general and will only give you a hard time if your stupid about it. Ironically they are pretty strict about tobacco smoking though. People here have a pretty dim attitude toward regular tobacco smokers, unless weed is mixed in haha.

I've always found the hypocrisy of school policies on tobacco vs. school policies on marijuana very interesting.

I would imagine any college where you're not caught doing it on their campus and see that it doesn't impede participation or hurt your grades isn't gonna give a damn what you do outside of class.

In the end, they care about results, and if you like to smoke but get good grades and are otherwise a good example to other students, they will take advantage of plausible deniability.

These rankings are skewed and misleading. To present an accurate representation, the journalist should undertake an objective and impartial empirical inquiry into the statistical percentage of enrolled students who are "cannabis generous" versus the number who are bogarts.

What good is a slideshow of college campuses if you don't explain what the policies, (written or unwritten) are towards recreational pot use?

As a student at one of these school i can say first hand you are absolutely current. Horrible picture of UCSC. Most of campus is actually in a redwood forest and thus looks very different.

Come on....

Humboldt State is by far the #1 pot school in the nation. Where's the University of Montana (Missoula)? That's easily #2.

They missed the obvious. The most Marijuana friendly college has to be Oaksterdam University. Every course they offer involves "Training for the Cannabis Industry."

Roanoke College (Salem, VA) has kicked out students who were on the dean's list for smoking pot but has let students who sexually assaulted others stay enrolled with a slap on the wrist and 1-semester academic probation. The teachers are amazing...the administration is despicable. Many of the administration and campus safety were members of fraternities and constantly let them off the hook...it's sad.

My friend who went to Mary Washington (Fredericksburg, VA) got kicked out for having a couple of pipes. Whereas Columbia University when I was there had a student get caught with 10lbs and arrested by the NYPD. CU said "when you get out of jail you're welcome to come back"

The perception of marijuana in VA is ridiculous, especially in regards to college campuses. They seem to forgive alcohol and abuse, especially among fraternities.
