Michael Scott Moore Kidnapped

A writer and travel journalist from Manhattan Beach, Calif. has been kidnapped by Somali pirates while doing research on a book about piracy.

According to Somalia Report, who first reported the kidnapping, 15 men in two Land Cruisers abducted Michael Scott Moore and beat his Somali associate last Saturday. After local leaders tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with his abductors, Moore was relocated several times throughout the region, said Somalia Report.

Two days after Moore was kidnapped, Somali leader Mohamed Ahmed Alim tried to negotiate with the pirates again, but they would not discuss his release until a ransom was paid, reports the Los Angeles Times. The ransom figure has not been disclosed.

The State Department confirmed on Thursday that a U.S. citizen was being held by Somali pirates, but they did not mention Moore's name. In a briefing with press, spokesperson Victoria Nuland said that the State Department has been in contact with the victim's family, as well as sources in Kenya and Somalia to investigate more about the incident. "We are concerned about this individual's safety and well-being," Nuland said, before calling for the immediate release of all kidnapping victims.

LA Weekly points out that Moore had briefly discussed his plans for a book on piracy in a June 2010 interview with the New York Times:

I also went to Africa late last year to write a series of articles about Somali pirates. A book about piracy has the same appeal to me as the surf book — it has the same clash between hard fact and cliched mythology. It would also involve a great deal of travel.

While it isn't known yet how long Moore has been in Somalia researching his book, he last updated Facebook in late December and Twitter in early January.

Moore is the author of Sweetness And Blood, a book about how surfing spread from Hawaii to California, and Too Much of Nothing, about surfing sub-culture and two teen boys growing up in a city modeled on Los Angeles. A journalist profile on Miller-McCune also notes that Moore was a Fulbright fellow for journalism in Germany and has written for The Atlantic Monthly, Slate, the Los Angeles Times and Spiegel Online.

Navy SEAL Team 6, a special ops military force, just carried out a rescue mission in the same region on Tuesday to take back Dane Poul Hagen Thisted, a Danish citizen, and Jessica Buchanan, an American citizen. The two had been working to de-mine the region when they were captured. The Washington Post notes that there are several Western hostages who are still being held in Somalia: "Several hostages were still being held in Somalia, including a British tourist, two Spanish doctors seized from neighboring Kenya and an American journalist kidnapped on Saturday." SEAL Team 6 is the same special-ops group who carried out the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan.

This article mentions two Westerners who were abducted while on a mine-clearing mission. Help a savage, and that's how he repays you.

This is a brilliant and talented writer who was trying to shed light on a situation most of you clearly know far too little about. Good reporters do take risks. Those of you who prefer to live your lives sniveling about the foolishness of stepping out from behind your laptops are free to stay at home. I suppose you also think the last two people rescued who were in Somalia clearing mines are idiots for having felt compelled to be in that part of the world. Leave the bravery of taking measured risks to provide much needed additional perspective on real world events to others. Michael was not there on holiday. He was doing research - and had been there before without incident to research his book Sweetness and Blood. People. Think before you post. Sending all best hopes for Michael's safe and speedy return.

I sure hope he makes it out OK and unscathed...

As one thing's for sure - he just got himself a 7 figure advance on his research book!

Kinda surprised the guy would risk his safety and proceed with the project in light of the fact that a Canadian author named Jay Badahur has already released a book called "The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World."

Bahadur actually lived with the pirates for a time.

Ya. One book. Why write any more? Clearly one book sums it all up.

Tell ya what, smart one. Google "books" "somali" "pirates." I happened to name only one with which i was familiar and in which the author took the very same approach.

And we're not talking needlepoint. It's highly dangerous and risky and now US military forces will be asked to put their lives on the line to drag Mr. Self-Important out of danger.

I'll now accept your apology.

People take risks for burning embers that reside in one's soul. Poor poor America to go have to save ones life. How many non profits do we have in America to put our soldiers back together after war. People and non profit funding do it. Surely, you could be a little bit less angry for this person to follow his RISKY dreams. Maybe it's not right to you, but to him he had no the urge to go. Why don't you go splurge for an urge and treat yourself to an in n out burger, and let the seals do what they are designed to do....

People, think about what you're saying. This is a person. People who care about him read your comments. And anyway, he's a journalist, researching a story. Where do you think your news comes from?

The World never runs out of STUPID. Hey, if you want to go to the Iranian border, North Korea, Somalia, that is up to you but, do not expect the 6 Teams or the US Military to keep saving your butt.
This isn't the Bronx or Detroit, this are the Worlds most dangerous places and we (the USA) are not the local cops!
You might be a good writer BUT, that must be where the smart stops!

Soldiers go into war. Are they stupid as well? Think about what you're saying. His book could have helped us understand these pirates better and helped save lives. That is what journalism is meant to do. Every day firefighters, police, soldiers and yes, journalists are heroically putting their lives on the line to make the world a safer place. Why belittle?
03:34 PM on 01/27/2012
Yes, Soldiers do go into dangerous places... .. that is what they do and I am beyond proud of their efforts. But, when someone (not trained, backed up, or prepared) goes into such a dangerous place and then requires our Soldiers to save them when they knew the risks, I draw the line.
Should someone lose their Father, Son, or Daughter (Our Soldiers) trying to save one who was warned, or knew what could come of their plight. Yes, the world needs to know what goes on in these places but, to go there after so many have been taken by these (pirate thugs).
Being a Veteran, it behooves me to see my comrades die or be permanently disabled trying to go into harms way for what could have been better planned or avoided.
Now, this guy is in (probably) a very bad situation (which I feel awful for) but, will someone die or suffer trying to get him out?
That is the issue I allude to not him trying to "get his story". I hope he gets out but,at what cost?
Sorry if I sounded insensitive, I am tired of seeing our Troops come home disabled or killed especially when it could have been avoided.

How bubble-headed do you have to be to go to a country known for kidnapping Westerners?
I'm afraid I've gotten very callous here. The US had to put its credit on the line to go, hat in hand, to beg to get back two journalists who KNOWINGLY crossed over into North Korea (and presumably are not planning to pay back any of the millions spent getting them back); tourists (if they weren't particularly inept spies) go... hiking?.... By the Iranian border? Really? What about the Danish tourists who took their KIDS into the waters around Somalia?
A disproportionate number of these cases involve out and out stupidity. Is there nothing we can do about THAT?

This is a pretty bad situation, but this guy must've grown up in the 818.. ;)

I'm glad he's safe but c'mon. He went to Somalia to research pirates. Is it any surprise he got kidnapped (and cost the American taxpayer a bundle to save his butt)? Now gotta go..am off to Mexico to research decapitating, torturing, drug cartels. See you all soon.
