20 Decadent Sub Sandwich Recipes (Photos)

First Posted: 01/27/2012 2:04 pm   Updated: 05/14/2012 4:38 pm

Sandwiches are amazing. What's not to love about our favorite ingredients stuffed between two pieces of bread? Clearly nothing, which is why we often turn to them as a lunch option -- sometimes even for breakfast. With the plethora of sandwich shops out there, the possibilities are endless. But sub sandwiches don't get a lot of love in our home kitchens.

More often than not, we stick to the simple combination of sandwich bread and cold cuts. And that just isn't right -- especially when we know just how very good they can be. That's not to say that a good cold-cuts sandwich doesn't hit the spot, but there's so much more potential for those pieces of bread.

We've put together a recipe gallery with 20 sandwich recipes you won't be able to resist. From the ultimate eggplant parmesan to Carolina pulled pork to shrimp po' boys, these recipes will make you wonder why you've been gipping yourself at home with quickly-thrown-together sandwiches. While some of these recipes do require more effort than the average meal (real, good barbecue requires work), others are a breeze to put together. And they all stand above the rest with interesting ingredients and twists on classic combinations.

The purpose of a sandwich is to have quick eats. If it takes more than a few minutes to slap together, then it becomes a meal. Anything that involves marinating, sauteing, breading & frying, etc. is cooking and unsandwichy. There were only a couple of these that I would actually eat like the pulled pork. The refried bean sandwiches? Nothing sounds nastier than beans on bread. I guess these writers never heard of something called a burrito.

For something different. Order just the 5 foot loaf of bread for a party sub. Take a long serrated knife and cut 3/4 inch thick slices from it. On one slice spread mustard, then a layer of boiled ham, turkey, roast beef, provolone cheese, swiss cheese, tomato slices, lettuce, olives, mushrooms, and bell peppers. On the other slice spread mayonaise and top it all. Cut it in half, serve with spicy potato chips.
It's a mouthful, but yum....Alfie-

Subway is having a special this month ... any sub for $5. I want their foot long seafood sub, with lettuce, tomato, onions and black pepper, black pepper, black papper and a seafood sub salad. I wonder if the salads are $5 this month too??? Bag of chips, soda. That sounds like good eating to me for the super bowl. I'm hungry just thinking about it. Also, I would like to have a really big apple but I don't want to have to go to the grocery store but I am really yearning for a tart and sweet apple.

I love Paula Dean, but I'm actually a real caterer. Those are called tea sandwiches, not finger sandwiches. You never cut them in rounds, but instead simply trim the crusts off. (Save the crusts for making ravioli stuffing or bread crumbs). It is prefered not to blend the cucumber into dried-out mush. Instead, slice them into 3/32 inch thick slices so they crunched and release their juice when you eat them. Carefully apply whipped cream cheese, the cucumber slices, and mild red pimentos to the tea sandwiches. Then slice into four wedges and arrange on a silver tray....Alfie-

Where do you people get these ricipes? There's NOTHING there I would eat! The ONLY meat I eat is beef, so chicken, ham, fish are all OUT! I don't know anyone who eats eggplant, especially for a football game, let alone the Super Bowl! Try coming up with things normal people might eat!

No problem, I throw that big hunk of rare roast beef on the Globe slicer, hack off about half of a pound thin sliced, pile it on a crisp kieser roll, some swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, nice crisp pickle on the side. Tall beer. Somebody stop me....Alfie-

One time I was shopping at a supermarket and happened to see some man standing in the food section and chewing away on small pre-cut slices of cheese stacked on a counter. Some store employee happened to see the guy and called a security guard who started questioning the man. Maybe the guy liked cheese or maybe he was just hungry.

Take bacon, pepperoni, ham, turkey for meat. Add in jalapenos, horseradish mustard, hot ketchup, mayo, lettuce, provolone, munster on top and maybe dill pickle slices. If you want tomatoes, but don't want ketchup,l put a jar of salsa in the blender. It'll come out like ketchup, but with a whole different taste.
