Mitt Romney Makes Pitch To Cuban Americans, Speaks A Little Spanish

Mitt Romney

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Mitt Romney hit on his audience's priorities on Sunday in Hialeah, Fla., where he spoke to a largely Cuban American crowd about a need to bring down leaders in Cuba and Venezuela and to maintain strong family values in the United States.

"I want to make sure that you see one of the boys, and I have the best one here today," he said of his son Craig, who speaks Spanish. "Why don't we have Craig say a word or two? Say it in Spanish, too, will you? En Español, si," the former Massachusetts governor continued.

Romney's speech, held in front of a restaurant called Casa Marin, had its usual elements, touching on the need to end Obamacare, create jobs and keep the military strong. He quoted "America the Beautiful" and spoke about when he first began dating his wife, Ann.

But he devoted more time than usual to relations with dictatorial states such as Cuba, tying the bureaucracy and big government there to what he said President Barack Obama wants in the United States.

"Some of you through your life experiences have seen what happens when countries have a government that becomes too big," he said. "This is a president who I think is making America into a European-style social welfare state."

Florida has 2.1 million Hispanics eligible to vote, one third of whom are Cuban American, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Nearly 30 percent are Puerto Rican. Their political leanings are at times different from Hispanic voters nationwide, a majority of whom are Mexican Americans, which some attribute to the fact that Puerto Ricans are citizens and Cubans have an easy path to citizenship when they arrive in the United States.

Cuban Americans and Puerto Ricans are heavily targeted by Republican candidates for this reason, especially in Miami-Dade county. A majority of Florida's Hispanic Republicans reside in the county, according to a report from the Pew Hispanic Center using data from the Florida Division of Elections.

Romney said last week that he would wish Fidel Castro to hell -- or "another land," as he put it -- and mentioned the Castros several times in his Sunday speech when discussing the need to be tough on dictators and support freedom movements.

Some Cuban Americans in the crowd, many of whom said they only speak Spanish, said they appreciated his message on the Castros and Venezuela President Hugo Chavez. Juan Perez, 60, was born in Cuba but moved to the United States in 1965, and considers himself Hispanic. He said he is still choosing between Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and respects their views on the Castros. He added that Obama has failed to act to stop the regimes in Cuba and Venezuela.

"If we were to treat Adolph Hitler the same way that Obama wants to treat these people, maybe Hitler would still be goose-stepping down the Champs-Elysees," he said.

Romney has support from two Cuban American members of Congress, Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), and former Florida Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, along with other Hispanic Republicans who joined him on stage in Hialeah.

Ros-Lehtinen mentioned Chavez in Spanish during her introduction of Romney, then talked about his strong conservative values as a "family man."

Ann Romney also added a line to her usual speech about her husband, telling the crowd that she and her husband share the strong family values of the community.

"We love this community and the reason we love this community is because you love families," she said.

"I challenge the Republican nominees, and all Republicans, to not just be the anti-illegal immigration party," he continued. "That's not who we are and that's not who we should be. We should be the pro-legal immigration party."

We, US citizens are the party of anti illegal aliens. We don't want people in our country who we don't really know who they are or where they come from.

Why doe Gingrich fail to mention that Romney hid out in France from 1965 to 1975 during the Vietnam War? Big deal he speaks some Spanish he is part Mexican. This does not qualify him to be president. What did he do for the Mexicans and Hispanics In Massachusetts?
12:29 AM on 01/31/2012
Well, this is for all Spanish people. This is America and they can vote for whomever they want on either side. They don't need any one person or group of people to tell them. They can vote for the one they feel is right in their hearts and mind. Whatever they pick, it's right for them. There is no such thing as group voting in the USA. Listen and make up your hearts and mind....whether it one of these Repubicans or President Obama. Listen to your feelings and you'll do what's right for you!

The future of Cuba is in the hands of the Cuban people, not Willard, not the GOP..Ever since the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban community has held out for Republicans to intervene...
Fifty years later, they are still hoping....

ALL politicians from both parties tell you the voter, what you want to hear. I saw the interview Romney did with Jorge Ramos in UNIVISION. All throughout the interview he seemed nice and very articulated, he didnt promise anything and basically defended himself from what Ramos wanted him to really talk about. When Obama was running for president he came to the community where I live and where there is a large Mexican-American population; he "enjoyed" a mariachi band and even ate a "torta" (mexican version of a sandwich). Romney should have asked for a "marimba" or a band that played "salsa", asked to eat a "moros con Cristianos" with rum. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Hires a Mariachi backup band before realizing these are mostly Cubans, then asked if he could get Ricky Ricardo to play instead

That's right Willard, say a few well chosen words to the republican Cubans in the crowd, they'll just eat it up. Tell them all how awful Castor was to them and their country, tell them all what they want to hear, get their vote and never deal with them again. Willard, like most republicans, only seem to find how to "speak Spanish" not only when it's convenient but, surprise, at election time. Yet these republican Cubans Kowtow to them like they were the second coming. What has the republican party ever done for Cubans or for that matter any other Hispanics in this country? Has anyone heard all the hate rhetoric coming from the republican party about immigration or the Dream act? One would think that Hispanics are all illegal or "anchor" babys trying to get money out of the American pockets. Latinos have to realize that republicans always give them a bunch of empty promises they'll never fulfill, as long as they get their vote, then disappear soon afterwards leaving them empty handed. Yet these republican Hispanics faithfully vote for a party that will forever consider them a group of people they only have to deal with every four years.

Asi que los Cubanos se Vendieron! No lloren cuando the Pina se le ponga agria! The rest of the Latinos and Hispanic are not that gullible Romney, We Won't forget in 2012!

When, oh when is R-money going to talk about the policies he intend to follow. He has said as far as homeowners going bankrupt that he wants them to go bankrupt so his friends on Wall Street can buy out those peoperties cheap, turn around rent them to the original owners, wait for the economy to improve then resell those hoses to make a handsome profit.

Wall Street will fix it all. Maybe with a plan like his housing plan he had better stay quiet then spring it on us like Republican Governor Walker did in Wisconsin and Lasich in Michigan.

Mittens needs the Hispanics....not for their votes, but to mow his lawn.....like he did in MA.
01:47 PM on 01/30/2012
Any Hispanic that votes Republican deserves to be treated like a second class citizen.
02:21 PM on 01/30/2012
So does the person who feels they can dictate what is and isn't right for Hispanics, while bemoaning someone else for doing the same.

Don't lose it now.
Let me apologise to Latinos on behalf of Paezovitch.

The only way he can win is by outspending his opponent with negative misIeading ads because he can't talk about his record.

This strategy will not work against Obama.
10:40 AM on 01/30/2012
You are correct. He will not have to outspend Obama. All he needs to do is just run against him and he will win.

Actually, the notion that Mitt is the "most electable" is in steep decline. Independents are dropping him like a rock. The more people look into his thin record and his huge vuInerabilities... they're having second doubts about his ability to challenge a strong skiIIed campaigner like Obama.

Romney will not have to do misleading ads.
The truth about Obama's policies are negative enough.

- Promised to cut the deficit in half during his first term, but instead added more to the deficit in less than three years than Bush did in a full eight years.

- Said his $780 BILLION 'Jobs Bill' would ensure unemployment would not go above 8%.
After passage unemployment spent 28 of the next 30 months AT OR ABOVE 9%.

- Signed a law allowing American citizens to be DETAINED INDEFINITELY, without charges or access to legal counsel.

- Passed a "HealthCare" bill that currently has less people with healthcare than when he signed it into law. Has given over 1000 waivers, as well.

- Didn't close Gitmo (said it would be a priority)
- Continues Rendition (promised to end that process)
- Increased domenstice surveillance (he promised to reduce it)
- Increased drone attacks (criticized and promised to end them)

One out of eight is correct. That is a better job than whoever currently works for R-money. Better apply far the job.

How would Cubans feel if they were treated like Haitians, Colombians, Mexicans ?
Their special immigration status is not representative of Latinos..guaranteed welcome to the USA...

Correct. Just look at the callous, self-righteous Marco Rubio who opposes legalization (except for Cubans).

It is none of Mr. Romney's business who leads Cuba. NONE. And, as for his opinion that we ought to keep the sanctions on Cuba, we all know how great that has worked. For almost 60 years of these sanctions, we still have Castro (or his brother) in charge and the same system in place. Good work, Republicants. Just as good as your reasons to go to war in Iraq (WMD's) and Afghanistan (to catch Bin Laden who was in Pakistan all the time.) Perhaps we could get the county agent from " Green Acres " to lead your party. Results would not be worse.
02:31 PM on 01/30/2012
Neither was it Obama's but he has (and does) criticize Cuban leadership.

Your selective outrage is showing.....and it makes you look silly

I appreciate a righty calling me silly. Great. What is silly is continuing a policy that has not worked for 60 years. That, indeed is silly. As I said, the Castro's are still in power. Is that silly? Nope . That is a fact. Before you people you disagree with silly, look at their quote. Mine is fact. To call me silly to state a fact is silly. Looks like the silly torch is back into your hands.

Ever since Eisenhower. And this policy, right or wrong, of denying Americans access to Cuba, trade embargos, etc etc certainly have not kicked the Castro's out or turned Cuba more democratic. It was stupid then and it still is stupid. We trade with many nations that are far from democratic, yet Cuba is always highlighted. As in many instances, US policy makes no sense.
