Mystery Of Reddit's Giant Crocodile Solved (PHOTO)

Giant Reddit Crocodile

First Posted: 01/29/2012 11:56 am Updated: 01/29/2012 11:56 am

It didn't take long Thursday for a picture of a seemingly dinosaur-sized crocodile posted on Reddit to trickle out over the Internet -- or for users to point out the photographic trickery involved.

Shortly after Reddit user kohlio posted the picture to the site under the heading "They killed this in my friends hometown back in Africa," posts started popping up questioning the veracity of the photo, followed by responses asking how anyone could fail to recognize the obvious forces at work -- namely, the trick of forced perspective.

"Based on the number of people there I was guesstimating at over 20 feet. That is troublesome because the largest ever nile croc is supposedly 21 feet," wrote Reddit user uncwil in response to the original post.

"That thing is at least 20ft long. I couldn't imagine being one of the people hunting it," another user wrote.

But users quickly pointed out that the people in photograph are sitting quite far back from the crocodile, making the animal appear much larger than it probably is.

"For this image (and the monster hog image also posted in comments) they are using a "forced perspective" camera trick that makes the animal appear much bigger than it actually is (although the croc still is huge)," Reddit user GWS2000 wrote. "Notice nobody in the photo has a hand or arm hanging over the front side of the animal. They are sitting further back from the animal than the picture implies."

Richard Freeman echoed those sentiments on the cryptozoology blog "Still On The Track," writing that "There is little close to the crocodile to indicate its length, but if the wall is the same hight as the one the people are sitting on in the background then it would seem that the croc is not remarkably large 14-15 feet; about average for an adult."

Those suspicions were verified by the text accompanying an original print of the photo, which Reddit users were able to trace back to a posting on a French site, among other places.

According to the caption, the crocodile was shot and killed by an animal control officer in Zimbabwe after it had attacked and killed a number of fully grown cows. Regarding its size, the caption offered the following estimate:

This beast of a crocodile was shot in the extreme north of Zimbabwe on the border with Mozambique and unfortunately, circumstance did not allow for a measurement. However, several guestimates put it over 16 feet. Our own estimate (based on a 25 mm cigarette filter lying slightly in the foreground) does suggest it measures closer to 15 feet. A return trip is planned to the little dam where this croc was shot, and a measurement will be taken from the wall upon which the croc is laying. Watch this space!

Reddit users noted that the picture recalls an earlier instance in which a man used forced perspective in a hunting photo to make it appear that his 11-year-old had captured a monstrous hog dubbed "Hogzilla" by the media.

As it turned out, experts confirmed that pig in question was in fact huge -- 8 feet long and 800 pounds -- but not as massive as photos originally suggested, according to the Associated Press.

Similarly, the Reddit crocodile is a huge animal, even if it doesn't measure up the largest crocodile ever caught. Scientists believe a 21-foot-long crocodile captured in the Philippines last year may be one of the largest crocs ever caught, according to the Daily Mail.

Check out footage of the Philippines crocodile below:

My brother-in-law, Steven Curle, shot this croc. in Zimbabwe. It is not a fake photo or superimposed as suggested below, there is no road between the people and the croc. They are indeed not close behind it. This was not done for any sort of "trickery." Steven had no idea that sort of popularity this photo would gain.

Baloney. And you say they are are "not close behind it." True! They are considerably behind it. It's obviously evident by comparing the grass.

There's a road between the croc and the people. You can see it at the extreme right, under the green. Yep, forced perspective, the oldest trick in the world.

Heeyyyy! Good point! I have never heard of this technique, Thanks for the share, If that croc was really as big as they make it look he would be downing people left and right for a mid-morning snack! I'm a photographer and I think I'm going to see how this works, have a great day!

Re: Raw Video : Giant Crocodile Caught in Philiphines

This video was hard to watch. I know crocodiles are dangerous reptiles, but even crocodiles
that have been caught should be treated, for lack of a better word, respectfully. The crocodile
shown in the video is being transported upside down on a pole with some sort of strong restraints.
I don't think it would be able to breathe properly and then when the crocodile opens its jaws as
much as it can, some men shove a tube in it's jaws and pour water down its throat. I'm assuming
its water. Maybe they're trying to keep the crocodile alive. Maybe they're transporting somewhere
to a crocodile sanctuary. I don't know if they have something like that in the Philiphines. Steve
Irwin would probably be mortified if he saw a crocodile trussed up like that, I am.

I think that's the crock that they caught in Sept and it's alive. They made an enclosure for it and want tourists to pay to see it. They were feeding it chicken and such and I haven't heard much since. People were objecting to it's captivity. I feel the same way, they really need to leave these crocs be in the wild. Down in the Everglades one can take an airboat tour ride and go out and see some big gators and it doesn't seem to interfere with the gators. I've seen some really big ones there and they're healthy. I'd like to see them get older and bigger myself.

I"m glad to hear that the crocodile in the video is still alive and that they have the
crocodile in an enclosure for tourists to see. It's not out in the wild, but atleast it's
alive. The airboat tour ride in the Everglades sounds interesting and I'm glad to
hear the alligators in the Everglades are thriving. Not everyone likes or is interested
in reptiles, but I am. I think because my dad was very interested in reptiles and we
had a lot of books in our house about reptiles when I was growing up. Crocodiles
and alligators have a place in our world, just like any other animal. People fear what
they don't understand, but they are actually fascinating animals and baby crocs and
baby alligators are adorable and their mothers fiercely protect their young just like
any other animal mother.

As long as the reptiles in the everglades aren't getting bigger & fatter on strayed tourist babies... that photo of the python captured there with a full-grown deer in its stomach pretty much convinced me that I wouldn't hike there for any amount of money unless I had a dog on a leash leading the way. If the dog didn't smell the snake before he was in range and start barking to warn me, he might become lunch for the snake, but that is better than the snake getting me!
