CHICAGO -- A 16-room, 6,100 square foot Frank Lloyd Wright house built in 1897 for Isidore Heller has been placed on the market, with a $2.5 million asking price.

Featuring seven bedrooms, 33 stained glass windows four fireplaces and an operational elevator original to the house, the three-story home sits on a large piece of land in Hyde Park, according to realtor Diane Silverman, who's representing the property.

"I think it's one of the more highly-regarded of [Wright's] houses," Silverman said. "It is considered an architectural masterpiece and a work of art, but it also happens to be a wonderful family house. The way it's laid out, the size of the rooms really make it a very good family house, which isn't always true of architecturally-significant homes."

The third floor of the house could easily function as a separate apartment, Silverman said. Accessible by staircase and the elevator, it features a sitting room, two bedrooms, a full bath, a large recreation room and even a separate kitchen. The main kitchen, on the first floor, features four large pantries in each corner of the room and a 25- by 22-foot dining room nearby.

The first floor of the house features wall colors and decor true to the home's intended aesthetic, in Frank Lloyd Wright's customary Prairie Style. Luckily, Silverman says the Heller House foregoes a less favorable characteristic emblematic of Wright's houses.

"This house has very large rooms with high ceilings, which isn't always the case with Frank Lloyd Wright houses," she said. "The Robie House, for example, has very low ceilings."

The house is listed by Urban Search Realty. Inquiries should be directed to Silverman at (312) 337-2400.
