Obama Google Plus Hangout: During Q&A, President Offers To Look At Resume Of Man Looking For Work (VIDEO)

ERICA WERNER 01/30/12 08:35 PM ET AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is trying to rebuild the American economy, one job at a time – literally.

The president asked an online town hall questioner Monday to send him her husband's resume, insisting he wanted to look into why the man remained out of work despite his background as a semiconductor engineer.

"I meant what I said, if you send me your husband's resume, I'd be interested in finding out exactly what's happening right there," Obama told the questioner, Jennifer Wedel of Fort Worth, Texas.

He told Wedel that according to what he was hearing from industry, such high-tech fields are in great demand and her husband "should be able to find something right away."

Wedel told Obama that despite what he said, her husband had been out of work for three years. She wanted to know why foreign workers were getting visas for high-skilled work.

The exchange came as Obama appeared in a live video chat room known as a "Hangout," part of online search giant Google's social networking site Google Plus. He was answering questions submitted via the Google Inc.-owned video site YouTube, as well as interacting live with Wedel and four others in the Hangout.

The post-State of the Union session was part of the White House focus on social media. In past such events – with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and earlier YouTube sessions following previous State of the Union addresses – Obama answered questions that had been submitted via online networks. But Monday's event allowed him to interact with a selection of his questioners, leading to more substantive exchanges as they pushed him on his stances.

Wedel's insistence that the president's claims about the demand for high-skilled workers weren't being born out for her husband led to the president's offer to take a look at his resume.

"I'll have to take you up on that," she told him. And Obama came back to it after covering a range of issues in the 45-minute session, telling Wedel, "Remember to send me that information!"

Obama got a variety of questions on the economy, and defended his policies on small businesses and innovation. An Occupy protester sent in a video saying she was out of work and asking Obama: "I need help. I'm 53. What am I going to do?"

The president's response, in part: "The most important thing I can do for folks who are out of work right now is grow the economy."

Obama was also asked to justify his administration's use of unmanned drone strikes, and contended they were being used judiciously. "I think that there's a perception somehow that we're just sending in a whole bunch of strikes willy-nilly," Obama said. "This is a targeted, focused effort at people who are on a list of active terrorists who are trying to go in and harm Americans."

And he was asked about online piracy. Congress recently delayed action on legislation cracking down on online piracy after opposition from Internet companies including Google.

Obama said he thought it was possible to protect intellectual property that creates jobs in the U.S., while still respecting the integrity of the Internet as an open system.

The exchanges came a day ahead of the Republican primary in Florida, as GOP presidential hopefuls attack Obama daily. But none of the questions put to him were about the presidential race. They were about the State of the Union and people's lives now.

There were also light moments, as Wedel asked Obama if he would show off his dance moves (the president refused, saying the first lady mocks his dancing) and another questioner asked the president how he and Michelle Obama planned to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this fall (since it's shortly before the election, Obama said he wasn't sure how romantic it would be).

More than 133,000 questions were submitted and voted on by YouTube users. Google officials selected the questions to ask based in part on those results.

Although many of the questions that appeared online were about Obama's stance on legalizing marijuana – something he has said he opposes when asked in the past – that did not come up Monday. Organizers said the No. 1 voted question was about the potential extradition to the U.S. of Richard O'Dwyer, a British student accused of setting up a website that gave people access to films and TV shows for free in violation of copyright laws.

Obama said he wasn't personally involved in the case but the administration wanted to ensure that intellectual property is protected "in a way that's consistent with Internet freedom."

The H-1b outsourcing visa is a corrupt corporate entitlement program which was designed by the outsourcing lobby. Currently, the H-1b is filled with loopholes to allow for workers to be underpaid, US workers to be displaced by H-1bs, and jobs to be shipped overseas using the H-1b outsourcing visa as the vessel. The biggest users of the H-1b outsourcing visa are companies that specialize in shipping US jobs overseas.

I really think that Google Plus could match the popularity of Facebook, especially with the competing Facebook Likes and Google Plus Ones. I now have a Plus One button for my site and get all my Plus Ones from GetPlusOnesEasy.com. It's a free Plus One Exchange system that's gotten me hundreds of Plus Ones already. http://GetPlusOnesEasy.com.

John McDonald, a semiconductor engineer, wrote a letter to President Obama regarding his response to Jennifer Weddel at http://www.johnmcdonald2012.com/Press%20Releases/PressRelease004.pdf
It would benefit President Obama to read it and learn.

One major problem President Obama has is that he drones on and on rather than getting to the point quickly. I completely phased out when he was explaining why children should understand the economy.

I like how she followed up on her question even though she wasn't supposed to. That's the only downfall to these types of town halls. People don't get a chance to respond.

He made many promises he did not keep. He talks about bringing the work back to America all the while borrowing more and more money from China. Some of his main contributors have and continue to close down American manufacturing and outsource the work overseas.

Just to refresh your memory.

"increase the size of the Army by 65,000 troops and the Marines by 27,000 troops"

Increase capital gains and dividends taxes from 15 to 20 percent for those making more than $250,000 (couples) or $200,000 (single)

"Will eliminate all income taxation of seniors making less than $50,000 per year. "

"Will ensure that federal contracts over $25,000 are competitively bid."

Obama "will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days."
"Barack Obama is committed to returning earmarks to less than $7.8 billion a year" $15.9 B actual.

No family making less than $250,000 will see "any form of tax increase." What he did was raise taxes on other things, A tax on indoor tanning services, increased tax on smokes, Obamacare Individual Mandate Excise Tax, Obamacare Employer Mandate Tax, Obamacare Surtax on Investment Income, Obamacare Hike in Medicare Payroll Tax, Obamacare Medicine Cabinet Tax, Obamacare HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike, Obamacare Tax on Medical Device Manufacturers, Obamacare Excise Tax on Charitable Hospitals, Obamacare Tax on Health Insurers, and there are more.

He should be called the new tax President.

What is amazing about this, is that Citizens can get somewhat direct access to their President through a video chat on a Social Network. And the President can do it safely, without the need for a lot of Security Measures, or shutting down a building, or a section of a city for it. He can sit, right therein the White House, on a webcam, and answer questions.

I believe that this should be something that every President from here on out should do at least once a month. Not necessarily exclusively on Google+, but when other Social Networks develop their own versions of Hangouts, he should do them there too.

Congressmen as well, should be made to embrace the Digital Era of communicating directly with their Constituents in this manner, rather than letting the Corporations speak for us.

I'm really bothered by the presidents attitude towards drone strikes. Apparently the deaths of hundreds of civilians doesn't matter.

Well, that was nice to watch. One of the things I appreciate most in Barack Hussein Obama is his ability to love life in all its aspects. It's that genuine love that you feel when he's talking, trying to explain something, or joking with kids. It's the idea that in the end, we all want to be happy and live a decent life, and that if we all work together, looking for common ground without ignoring our differences, we can certainly make some important progress. I love it when women have this kind of attitude, and at the same time, it's what can make men really hot. Go Obama!

I was really bothered by his attitude regarding drone strikes. While they may be effective in killing our enemies, hundreds of civilians have also been killed.

I'd tend to think that he's right though: imagine having to send ground troops to take out those terrorists. That would have made it impossible to not kill tens of thousands more civilians in order to achieve the same goal (as Bush has shown in Iraq). Of course, not having to kill civilians at all would be MUCH better. But do you know how to accomplish something like that ... ? EVERY civilian killed is one civilian too much. But terrorists in general hide in civilian areas. That means that the only way to get them is to invade the entire area and cause a lot of destruction, or to send well-targeted drones. Of course, drones alone aren't enough, you need a comprehensive strategy for the entire region in order to diminish the influence of AQ and the Taliban. But as far as I know, that's exactly what the US started to do under Obama (the so-called "Afpak strategy").

A couple of questions I would have asked:

1) Why are you allowing the military industrial complex to run the country?
2) What are you doing to put a halt to and/or constrain lobbying?

1. What makes you think that that's the case, knowing that Obama just ended the war in Iraq, is already withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, and didn't start any new big war? 2. As the HP has shown in an article some months ago, thousands of lobbyists are leaving the WH because of Obama's new anti-lobbyist measures. That's a historic record.

The MIC encompasses a LOT more than overseas wars. It's also the BATF, DEA, penal system, police, you name it.

The H-1b should only be reserved for companies who cannot find other workers, according to Obama. But that is not how it works. The top sponsors of H-1b visas are offshoring firms from India, and 95% of their workers here in America are on the H-1b visa. This visa isn't just going to companies who are displacing American workers with lower paid foreign workers, but it is also assisting in the offshoring of jobs.

The President was surprised to learn the person in question had a degree and 10 years experience in engineering semi-conductors. He said that he is being told there is a shortage of those jobs. My question to him is are the people telling him that engineers, or perhaps lobbyists and corporate interests? Do you suppose they are telling the truth, or do you think they have an incentive to lie?

The IT industry has a 20 year history of not only lying, but manufacturing "shortages" and manipulating our nation's laws to benefit them financially at the expense of American workers.
