It's no wonder the idiom "the icing on the cake" rings so true -- it's because no cake (or cupcake) would be complete without it. Can you imagine your favorite carrot cake without cream cheese frosting or your chocolate cake without rich ganache?
Traditionally, every cake has its best-suited frosting -- the classic pairings include red velvet with cream cheese frosting, strawberry shortcake with whipped cream, chocolate cake with ganache. But that doesn't mean you can't put cream cheese frosting on chocolate cake, or venture outside of traditional flavors! Feel free to experiment and try one -- or all -- of these frostings the next time you bake a cake or a batch of cupcakes.
