Gregory Scott Hopkins, Pennsylvania Councilman, Arrested For Strangling Catherine Walsh In 1979

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A borough councilman in Western Pennsylvania was in jail on Monday, charged with strangling a lover whose body, bound with rope, was found in her bed more than 30 years ago.

Tenacious detectives, who held onto physical evidence collected in the 1979 murder of Catherine Walsh, were credited with cracking the decades old cold case by using DNA matching, a forensic tool not even introduced when the killing occurred.

Gregory Scott Hopkins, 65, known to fellow Bridgewater Borough council members as simply Scott Hopkins, was arrested on Sunday night and charged with Walsh's killing in nearby Monaca.

"We intend to fight this," Hopkin's attorney James Ross told Reuters on Monday.

A probable cause affidavit filed with a Beaver County court said Hopkins told police in 1979 that he had been involved in a sexual relationship with Walsh, 23, but that he had not had sexual contact with her for about a month before her death.

Police who found Walsh's strangled body in her bed, her hands bound with rope, held onto crime scene evidence including the rope, a bandana, her nightgown and bedsheets.

In October 2010, with DNA matching emerging as a successful forensic tool, police submitted the evidence for DNA testing.

"The purpose of resubmitting the items was to have them examined using methods and technology that were not available to investigators at the time (the) homicide took place," the affidavit said.

Bodily fluids on the sheets, the rope and nightgown led to the arrest, police said.

Police did not immediately disclose how they obtained a DNA sample from the councilman.

Hopkins was held without bond in the Beaver County Jail, pending a court hearing on February 6.

Remember him from high school. Saw him driving down the street one day with a heavy foot on the gas and a red light straight ahead. Not a pleasant memory. Creepy actually.

I understand they were able to connect him with DNA but why wait till 2011 to finally test it, When it could have been done some 10-15 years ago but i am glad this young lady finally got some justice and can finally rest in peace and hopefully he'll get what he deserves and he deserves nothing less than Life in prison

There are thousands of unsolved cases, and plenty with physical evidence still in storage. Have you heard of how many rape kits just sit on a shelf in storage?

Most departments don't have the resources, time, manpower, or money to go through every single one of them, and have them all done with already.

I realized that right after i posted the comment. I myself am a former police officer i had to resign after i got sick and i know i had to leave several cases on the shelf because we just don't have the expense to test em and our dept will only test it if we can either prove it one or if the person was a very strong suspect....The one case i hated to leave was the rape of a 7 year old girl we and work in a very small town we only have 12 officers in our dept and this little girl was kidnapped and raped by two guys they kidnapped her while she was walking home from a friends and this is the kind of town where we can let our kids walk a block or two to a friends and not have to worry..& we have no suspect but we couldn't run the DNA because it wasn't in our "Expense" so i know how hard it can be to get DNA ran and it sucks

From Timesonline.com news service:

"Hopkins, a Republican, was appointed to borough council and ran for election last year. He was elected in November with 91 votes, finishing third among four candidates for the three open seats."

Sweet. It is sad how people can torture and kill someone then go about living their lives among us as if they were good people.Everyone will probably say what a nice man he was.Yea,a nice man who bound and strangled the life from someone he was supposed to care about. Real nice guy.

I agree with you 100% plus this man was in charge of making public policy. It disgusts me, and he is not the only one out there.

That DNA better be on the rope. Otherwise, well, she was his girlfriend.

If Ted Kennedy can allow a girl to drown in his car, while he swims to shore leaving her alone and locked into the sinking vehicle, certainly a mere councilman can strangle his girlfriend and walk away for 3 decades.

yes, ted kennedy belongs in this story. how very perceptive of you.

Ted Kennedy deserves to be vilified for all time for the murder he committed.

How very poorly educated of YOU.

A man that attacked my grandmother back in 1974 was arrested 4 years ago using the same technology. Unfortunately he passed away last year so they never could take him to court.

Gotcha! Can you imagine him having this hanging over his head all these years? I sincerely hope that he's been sweating since the advent of the use of DNA.
Those detectives deserve a lot of credit and a big parade. And, if there's a reward for solving this young woman's murder, they deserve that too. I hope her family can rest a bit easier now. I feel so bad for such a young woman having her life cut so short because of this jerk.
And it makes me wonder, did he commit any more murders that no one yet knows about? How often does it happen that a person murders one person and then stops? Or have I been watching too much TV?
Regardless, my sympathies to the family, RIP to the young women and to all those trying to politicize this crime, give it a rest. This is a human life we're talking about, not an election.

Serial killers are actually rather rare, but murders themselves happen more frequently than I'd like to think about. It's likely he only killed her, though I suppose it mostly depends on -why- he killed her.
