Newt Gingrich Robocall: Mitt Romney Forced Holocaust Survivors To Eat Non-Kosher Food

Newt Gingrich Robocall

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Newt Gingrich campaign has a robocall out in Florida claiming that Mitt Romney once took kosher food away from Holocaust survivors.

The allegation made in the call, obtained by anti-robocall activist Shaun Dakin, is undoubtedly targeted at Florida's large Jewish and elderly populations.

The text of the call:

As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney vetoed a bill paying for kosher food for our seniors in nursing homes. Holocaust survivors, who for the first time, were forced to eat non-kosher, because Romney thought $5 was too much to pay for our grandparents to eat kosher. Where is Mitt Romney's compassion for our seniors? Tuesday you can end Mitt Romney's hypocrisy on religious freedom, with a vote for Newt Gingrich. Paid for by Newt 2012.

LISTEN:

The call is referencing Romney's veto of a 2003 bill. It came at a time that some nursing homes were considering eliminating their kosher kitchens during a period of budget cuts. Their plan was to instead bus in kosher food from other locations. The bill Romney vetoed would have given an additional $600,000 in funding to nursing homes, therefore making it possible for them to continue cooking kosher food on site.

"It's sad to see Speaker Gingrich lashing out in a desperate attempt to try and save his floundering campaign," said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul. "Speaker Gingrich will say anything to distract voters from the fact that he suffered an unprecedented ethics reprimand, was forced to pay a $300,000 penalty, and resigned in disgrace at the hands of his own party. His record is one of failed and unreliable leadership and simply one Americans can't risk."

The Gingrich campaign did not return a request for comment.

Commentary magazine notes, "Whether you believe he was right or wrong to veto it, this was clearly a position that made Romney appear insensitive to the elderly and Jewish communities."

The funding for kosher kitchens, however, was never actually eliminated.

"In the end, the veto was overridden by the Massachusetts state legislature, and the facilities kept their kosher kitchens after all. But Romney’s decision was not, as Gingrich claims, a choice to 'eliminate kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under Medicare,'" added Commentary. "First of all, it was a choice made by the nursing homes themselves, not the Massachusetts government. Second, it was never actually going to prevent kosher residents from accessing kosher food. And third, Romney's decision wouldn't have cut anything -- he simply vetoed additional funds, keeping funding at the status quo during a budget crisis year."

The 2003 bill gained attention recently after the New York Post published an article about it on Friday. Gingrich mentioned it while campaigning in Jacksonville on Saturday, telling voters that Romney "eliminated serving kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under Medicare." Gingrich did not, however, go as far as the claim made in the robocall.

UPDATE: 4:00 p.m. -- At a campaign stop in Plant City, Fla. on Tuesday, Gingrich denied any knowledge of the robocall. When asked by a reporter whether it was "over the top," Gingrich replied, "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond confirmed the calls were going out statewide on Tuesday.

Speaking the day before the Delaware primary, Gingrich hinted he was considering ending his presidential run:

"I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing," Gingrich said in an interview with NBC News during a campaign stop in Delaware. "We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night and we will look and see what the results are."

According to NBC, the former House speaker said he would need to "reassess" based on the results of Tuesday's primary in Delaware, a state where Gingrich has spent a great deal of time campaigning in recent weeks. Gingrich indicated that the state's 17 delegates were crucial to his viability as a candidate.

This is where the size of the war chest means everything. Sure, Gingrich has the sugar-daddy donor promising to dole out the spare cash needed to keep the road show on the road, but Romney has vast reserves that enable him to have troops on the ground. The kinds of bombs that Gingrich is finding himself having to volley at Romney and that he's having to disseminate through his speed dial system are bombs  Read More...

Their denials of wrongdoing are to be expected. NEVER trust a polititian or any government/state official, NOR anyone whose livelihood can be directly or indirectly terminated by any of the aforementioned sub-species, whether by their own hand or by a third party acting on their orders.
Why?
Beside the things we already know about the masses and the masters, just read 'The Asassination Of Marilyn Monroe' by Donald E. Wolfe, the cover-up, the lies, the theft and destruction of documents to preserve the hides of the wealthy and influential in society. What a wake up call. I wouldn't even spit on them if they were on fire. Lower than a snake's belly...the lot.
I'm aware that corruption goes on everywhere to a greater or lesser degree, but do we REALLY want to ignore the backhanders, the injustices, the wolves in sheep's clothing? I certainly don't. Do YOU?
By the way...I'm an Englishwoman born and bred and have no affiliation whatever with the U.S. nor have I ever visited that country.

I never knew the Nazis fed the Jews kosher food while they are in the camps. As Newt's robo-call states the "Holocaust survivors, who for the first time, were forced to eat non-kosher"

That a bunch of bar larkey" he wouldn't do that....Kocher food cost the same as other food you just buy it at the supermaker: It not that much more and sometimes you pay a lot less for it. That's crazy. Newt will stop at nothen and say things that can't ever be true. It is the people in charge of the assisted care home that are in charge of buying the food. They hire people who don't know how to prepare the food and feed them crap. That is the way it is done in all retirement homes. I know how it is, I've seen it. The people that are hired in these places, most of them don't care about anything except getting out asp and picking up a low paying pay check.

The best news so far for Newt Gingrich is that The Donald has flung his support to the opposition.

Newt wanting to end religious hypocrisy? Would he be outraged if it were Halal food? Doubt it.

I don't like Romney any more than Gingrich, but I am Jewish and believe in seperation of church and State. There is no state requirement to offer kosher food. The nursing homes can decide to cater (no pun intended, but it is a good one) or not.

Do any of you libs remember the claims made during the Dem primaries between OB and Hillary? They were brutal too.

If I have to vote for Romney I will newt I will too. I'm not ecstatic, but cannot stand another 4 yrs of OB. Maye one of them would ask Rubio or West, maybe Cantor,to be VP.

When you can't comeback with a ligit argument, attack grammar, and or intelligence. Just because I don't agree with u doesn't make me wrong. First part of my statement was completely accurate. Unless your memory is deteriorating bc of some substance you should have given up around, 17, like most respondible adults. I can tell by your pic you may be pushing a little past 17.i could be wrong.

Second part was opinion. I am not happy with selection, and if either Romney or Newt pick someone I stated, then I would not be so disappointed. Got it grammar nazi?

We should of let the market work itself out in the beginning. When Romney stated that the poor and rich will be taken care of is do true, and he wasn't worried. U knew what he meant, and it wasn't meanspiriited, it was the truth. There is help for poor who need it and the rich is self explanatory.

We, the middle class, not only have to work hard everyday to sustain a simple life, but end up losing value on our homes bc most of the homeowners who went into foreclosure bc they could not afford it, and knew they couldn't afford in the beging, knowing they wiuld receive help. They were backed by the community organizations and government who forced banks to loan regardless of income, credit rating, and documentation that could determine if they could continue to pay in the future. My family who has paid on time regardless of what we had to give up.

Our healthinsurance has gone up about 75% since the passing of Obama care, and we are not given help in any of the 2700 pages, pre existing condition doesnt matter bc we we have maintained insurance even when my husband was laid off from Enron while I was 81/2 months pregnant. Dec 3 so no christmas just eachother, and nsurance We have always given up anything to maintain our childrens health, safety and future for our kids.

Hey I am a Newt supporter but this one was silly and below the belt. Still to your principles.

Make the obvious point that Romney can't oppose government sponsored health care when he created government sponsored health care. Politically Newt is a bright conservative who helped balance a federal budget which none of the other candidates can say.
