If a cover is the highest compliment one songwriter can bestow upon another, then few songwriters command as much respect as Leonard Cohen. It seems like thousands of artists have interpreted his work, especially his signature late-career song 'Hallelujah' which Cohen once told the CBC could use "a break."

What a fabulous talent! I've been playing this CD nonstop since downloading it yesterday morning.
Although my favorite song of his might be 'Everybody Knows', or 'Death of a Ladies Man'... I'm wrong, I couldn't pick one favorite.
And I so enjoyed that last statement from Rufus Wainright: "He's a family man and a fantastic grandfather. He plays keyboard with Viva, my daughter, all the time. He lives upstairs so he visits daily. I'm very fortunate to have him around, 'cause a lot of the time, I'm off working and making records and touring. He's been there for his daughter, Lorca, and me."
Now this child is indeed endowed with some amazing genes!

I've been a fan since 1975 when my older roommate at College turned me on to LC. An acquantince of mine and his wife are guitarist and producer for LC.

Hate to say, I don't like his approach these days, but adore the albums "Dear Heather" on back.

Deep Deep Artist. His poetry and music just take on a life of their own and you're along for the ride into unexpected caverns and hillsides.

When I was young and beautiful, a gorgeous young man (successfully) seduced me with "Suzanne." I remember the boy, the song, and Mr. Cohen fondly to this day.

Cohen's Waiting for the Miracle should be the new national anthem of the USA.

Nothing left to do
when you know that you've been taken.

Nothing left to do
when you're begging for a crumb

Nothing left to do
when you've got to go on waiting
waiting for the miracle to come.

Leonard apparently lost the rights to his song "Suzanne" because he sang it over the phone to a producer who stole it. Until that guy did the famous remake of "Hallelujah", it was his most covered song. He said he felt angry about it until he heard some Turkish sailors singing it one day.

Go Leonard.

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception.
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
who are oppressed by the figures of beauty,
you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."
