William Boykin, Anti-Muslim General, Withdraws From West Point Speech After Outcry

WASHINGTON -- Liberal and religious freedom groups claimed victory on Monday night when Lt. Gen. William Boykin, famous for his strident anti-Muslim speeches, pulled out of a planned Feb. 8th appearance at West Point as part of the National Day of Prayer.

Boykin is best known for giving explicitly religious speeches while in uniform, telling an audience in 2003 of a Somalian warlord that "I knew that my God was a real God, and his was an idol." Bokyin retired from active duty in 2007 and has continued giving anti-Islam speeches, frequently calling Islam a "totalitarian way of life" and questioning the eligibility of Muslims for protection under the Constitution.

"I’m glad that the cadets will not be forced to hear the words of an anti-Muslim general whose rhetoric does not align with the values of our military and also endangers our troops in combat," said Jon Soltz, the founder of liberal veterans' group Vote Vets.

Vote Vets was the first organization to call for the cancellation of Boykin's speech. Soltz and the group's vice president, Richard Allen Smith, wrote a letter to West Point last Thursday arguing that "the presence of LTG Boykin at West Point would violate Army Values" because of his "history of extremist and hateful comments towards Islam," citing the service of American Muslims in the military during the post-9/11 era.

They were quickly joined by other groups, including the Council on American Islamic Relations and the Military Association of Atheists & Freethinkers, both of which released statements in support of canceling the speech.

The scheduled speech also sparked controversy at West Point itself. The academy administration backed Boykin, telling ThinkProgress that they were "comfortable and confident that what retired Lt. Gen. Boykin will share about prayer, soldier care and selfless service, will be in keeping with the broad range of ideas normally considered by our cadets."

But a group of cadets and faculty angered by the planned speech held a conference call on Friday night with Mikey Weinstein, head of the the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. One professor, a combat veteran, wrote to Weinstein saying that the invitation was at odds with the Army's mission of "making it clear that Americans are NOT Christian crusaders who hate Muslims."

Weinstein stressed to The Huffington Post that the vast majority of his 101 clients at West Point were practicing Protestants and Catholics. "Most of our clients are Christians being told that they're not Christian enough," he said.

Vote Vets and other groups stepped up the pressure by appealing to Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army Chief of Staff and former top commander in Iraq, in writing on Monday. While Boykin did not comment on the reasons for his withdrawal, he canceled the appearance later that day.

William Boyken is a PATRIOT who has served our country faithfully for three decades in the most elite units that exist in our Armed Forces. The weasel who organized this request for his removal as the West Point speaker is a fool.

Wow, what is wrong with the military today? Gangs and religious fundies with no clue to the US Constitution they are supposed to be protecting...

Hooray for Mickey Weinstein, who's life is in constant danger from death threats, for upholding the First Amendment! He has been working long and hard for religious freedom, starting with the outrageous hatred and treatment of his oldest son at the Colorado Springs Air Force base because he was Jewish. Weinstein's ire was provoked when, contrary to his assumptions that the religious and constitutional climate at USAFA had improved since leaving USAFA, his younger son Curtis, an Academy cadet, was exposed to Christian proselytizing of an insultingly patronizing and anti-Semitic nature, including questions from upperclassmen inquiring "How it felt to kill Jesus". The hegemony of evangelical intolerance at the Academy was also confirmed by Weinstein older son Casey, a 2004 Academy graduate, who alleges that "Senior cadets would sit down and say, 'How do you feel about the fact that your family is going to burn in hell?'. This galvanized Weinstein into challenging the perceived religious intolerance present within the ranks of the military in general and the US Air Force Academy in particular. Casey's encounters with religious bigotry occurred at the Academy, which is where I first encountered it as well." Of course he's concerned with other religions having problems as well. Some can't even be Christian enough for them. When I saw him speak, Weinstein was escorted in an armored vehicle with police guards.

I would like to thank Vote Vets and everyone else who got involved in the process because America is stronger when everyone gets treated equally.

I don't think equality means inviting someone to pray who is abusive to one group alone. If Lt.Gen. William Boykin is anti-Muslim, he should keep it to himself. As a leader he has a responsibility to at least appear unbiased. Back-biting is a sin.

OK, I'll bite, how was the likes of Rosencrans useful to the United States? How about Burnside? Hooker? Shall I continue?

The last thing we need is a willfully ignorant religious bigot spouting off while in uniform representing the United States of America, including loyal *Americans* in our Armed Forces who happen to be adherents of the religious traditions this jackanapes of an excuse for a bigot is denigrating with his deplorable comments unbecoming an American officer.

With such as Boykin, who needs enemies?

I forget that we want the Army to be more like the Boy Scouts, now...

We used to call Targets at BRQ "Ivans," and most Taliban fighters were "Towel-Heads" but let's modernize now for that good PR...

Been out since 2006, and I haven't looked back

As an aside....

General Macarthur was one of our greatest heroes, but was also overtly racist...

Not condoning racism, but it is hard to argue against his usefulness while exhibiting it

The fearful, the ignorant, the bigots are everywhere in our society. Just because someone wears a uniform doesn't mean he's a straight up fellow.

Nobody cares what this hairball thinks.....

Sometimes Darwin's "natural selection" works waaay to slow. The sooner these screwballs and misfits are bred out of existence...the better.

This is just a guess, but I would say that no one would have had a problem with a general giving a pro-muslim speech. Just guessing

Generals should stick to their job description.

It's not their job to be a spiritual leader...

WAR is what they do.....

Generals have to be many things in time of war. Sometimes that includes different aspects of being a leader which could involve a spiritual aspect.

Pat Tillman: CNN? The Communist News Network - Really? It is about what one person allegedly said. That isn't proof of anything except about that one person.

Coming from a military family, --a family who has fought in every war on this Continent since the French and Indian wars, served my country in the Marines, ALL 6 brothers have served or are currently serving (1 killed in "Nam, 1 POW/MIA for 4 years and died 9 years after release from the effects of Agent Orange), currently have neices and nephews serving in Army, Navy, Marines and a granson in the Navy..... I can tell you.....you are wrong.

Zealotry and bigotry runs across our society...all peoples, all "classes", all have their haters, their fear and ignorance. There are no bounds.

There has always been a lunatic fringe in our country...about 20% of the citizenry. They have been called many names over the centuries but have always been "out there"...and infect our nation in every state, everywhere.....

This guy is one of them.

I wonder at your comment and think, perhaps, you were rejected by the Air Force or their Academy or were mustered out against your will.

Barbara, I have to disagree with you. Not about Boykin, who's a loon, but your premise that our military hasn't become dominated by teavangelicals just like him. Your last comment to kool morning was uncalled for.
Boykin is symptom, and he's not as rare as you claim. If he was he would have not been the Pentagon's ASD for Intelligence under Rumsfeld, even as he was being reprimanded for appearing at churches in uniform and his anti-muslim speeches. He is also the guy who used to carry a laminated photo he loved to show off he claimed showed Satan in the skies over Mogadishu. Yet he kept his job.
The Air Force Academy is notorious for their religious right proselytizing. Check out the Military Religious Freedom Foundation at:
http://www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org/
Yeah, I know, just a bunch of Jews and Atheists complaining about good Christians. Yet they have been winning suits against the AF Academy for years. They are also the group who exposed the activities of "Christian Embassy" and the participation by senior officers and the Secretary of the Army in a video they made showing their mandatory prayer meetings inside the Pentagon.
Sadly, not much has changed. Bush/Cheney encouraged this and Obama has not done much to stop it. There are still offices in the Pentagon and on many bases that begin every day with a prayer meeting. Of course, they are now "completely voluntary". Hah!

In keeping with the idea of speakers being US Army, here's an idea... While Gen Boykin is not welcome to express his opinions, I'm sure these liberal groups would welcome and embrace a speech by Major Nadil Malik Hasan. He made quite a statement for radical Islam during his foray at Fort Hood but perhaps he could articulate it for these liberal groups so they could understand.

In the military, there is no such thing as "free speech". A General is entrusted to do his job, without complaint, without an opinion.

And, this has nothing to do with your warped opinion...

Each should keep to what they do best. For you, it's called "pick up a book now and then...one without pictures"./.

News flash he's retired. As such he's entitled to speak out and voice his opinion. What I find amusing is how you liberals who constantly scream for people rights and yet want to deny those same rights to anyone who's opinion differs from your. Hypocrisy of the first order. Seems you lack both knowledge and power so you should think of changing your little phrase there to "ignorance is bliss".

"LOL! As I said, Skippy, please tell me how Eisenhower was elected or "Storming Norman" campaigned for GW if they could not exercise their right of free speech. Educate yourself as to reality as opposed to some halfa.. blog site.

How is it possible to mix Freedom, Truth, and Religious Intolerance? Well, maybe if you don't understand the meaning of the words, or the basic tenets of U.S. society.

" . . . it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” Hermann Goering

The brave men standing in the long grey line are very aware of whom they serve and protect. They are are professionals at arms. leaders of the first order. The best we got. They don't polish General Mac Arthur's belt buckle for nothing and the man with the white pearl pistol handles stands in front of the library's huge bronze doors remembering the entire class of 1950 in Korea wiped out like Kleenex tissues yer the entire class. . The grave of General Custer and his wife are in a small Grave yard beside the Catholic Chapel above the Eisenhower Hall and in the tiny Lutheran Church is an empty plaque depicting the betrayer Benedict Arnold.. The Cadets have already figured out before they get there if a white light goes off someplace they might be first up but one sure thing is we wont be long after. The World figured out way back at Pharaoh and Isiah. There is only one God. Abraham had two sons the father of the Faith Ismael and Isak meeting in our era on an international scale . The restoration story has to be the embracing of Jacob and Easue in unity restoring the Cain killing Abel. I thank God Almighty every day for all the men and Women of West point Military Academy .

A national day of prayer is nothing more than a joke. Why should anyone be forced to listen to a bunch of bigots, spouting that their God is better than your God? It seems the religious folks can no longer get millions of Americans to go to church, so now they have to force their beliefs on people who really don't want to hear it, in a public setting. I don't care what your religious beliefs are, if you want to talk about them, do it in a church or whatever your setting is, but don't force it on others.
