John Boehner: Time For Government To Stop Helping Homeowners

John Boehner

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker John Boehner thinks it's about time for the government to stop trying to aid people with underwater mortgages.

Responding to a plan President Barack Obama unveiled Wednesday to help homeowners refinance, Boehner scoffed at the idea and then suggested government should get out of the way of increasing foreclosures and falling prices.

"One more time? We've done this. We've done this at least four times where there's a new government program to help homeowners who have trouble with their mortgages," the Ohio Republican told reporters on Capitol Hill.

"None of these programs have worked. I don't know why anyone would think that this next idea is going to work," Boehner continued. "All it does is delay the clearing of the market. As soon as the market clears and we understand where the prices really are -- [that] will be the most important thing we can do in order to improve home values around the country."

Obama's plan would require legislation from Congress to permit the Federal Housing Administration to help certain homeowners -- specifically, those who are underwater but current in their payments and whose loans are not held by the FHA, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac -- to obtain new loans at better interest rates, saving $3,000 a year on average. A similar plan already aids people whose mortgages are held by one of those government-backed entities, but other homeowners usually cannot get a bank to refinance their loans.

While the administration's loan modification effort so far have fallen far short of its goals -- reaching fewer than 1 million homeowners when it aimed for 4 million with the last initiative -- Shaun Donovan, secretary of housing and urban development, argued Wednesday that doing more is vital.

"Economists on all sides of the political spectrum have recognized that a broad-scale refinancing effort is one of the most important things that we can do, not only for families and for the housing market, but also for the economy more broadly," Donovan said at a White House briefing.

He suggested that letting the market hit bottom and clear out, as Boehner suggested, was not a useful response to families struggling with overpriced mortgages and that the market has already fallen to an appropriate level.

"There's no question, if you look at the fundamental economics in the housing market, by all standard measures we've reached a level of prices that is supported by the fundamental economics," Donovan said. "And so the great risk here for families, for neighborhoods, is that we let that spiral continue and continue to harm families and neighborhoods in a dramatic way."

Although Boehner dismissed the plan, he insisted he would be willing to talk to the White House. "I am always open to working with the president of the United States. We both have a job to do. If it makes economic sense, if it's fiscally responsible, certainly I'll take a look at it," he said.

Boehner provides extensive links to federal homeowner assistance programs on his congressional district website.

Just imagine if instead of funneling billions of our tax dollars into interest-free loans to the big banks through Bush/Cheney's TARP, so they could lend it out to the very taxpayers who were provided the money and charge us interest, thus priming the already broken pump to keep Americans racking up more debt, the billions had gone directly to the underwater homeowners to pay off their mortgages, thus  Read More...

Solution is very SIMPLE....allow Homeowners to REFINANCE their home loans AT THE SAME LOW INTEREST they got from the FED. It would lower their monthly mortgage payments by at least half and FREE up money so that they can spend it on the economy. Think about it...why weren't we-homeowners also bailed out with low interest loans like the crooks at the banks, insurance companies & too big to fail industries. Its time for REAL CHANGE...we have to take back our government.

Stop meddling with our bubble, you pesky president! Its designed to crush the little people!

It is interesting to me that so many GOP members had no problem with bailing out the banks or not allowing them to fail. Yet, they would throw the average American homeowner to the wolves. It is the banks problem for allowing these financially illiterate people to take out huge mortgages and loans they could not possibly pay back. I would equate their actions with slipping a weighted rope around the neck of a drowning person.

"All it does is to delay the Clearing of the Market." Good Grief! What a jerk! So - 15 million foreclosed Americans can just turn over their homes to the banks to *Re-Sell* and collect another 5 years worth of interest profit up front - (plus the down payment) -on - and just do what? Stay homeless so that the banks tally sheets will all look nice and pristine again and that money train can get started fresh and new??? Get rid of these ..people.

borrowing/bailout is all in chain, anything you cannot pay cash is lavish, any purchase thru loan is not a purchase, failed loan is failed investment, investments are of lobbyist then so to win vote, politicians/government will satisfy/bailout their lobbyist dipping into taxpayers (who are now disemployed due to company cutbacks)...oh well i hope this helps a little, otherwise just watch documentary "inside job"

We can see where John Boehner's interest is, in "Big Banks" and not in protecting America's Citizens he took one oath to protect before taking another to NOT abide by it. For him, being elected into congress he has become the 1% opposing the US citizens. He has a lifetime retirement, unless http://www.change.org/petitions/eliminate-capitalistic-military-regime gets enough signatures to stop it, for himself and spouse which grantees them a house for the rest of their days, putting them in the 1%. What happens to other Americans isn't his concern although he took an oath to see after their needs. That's "Politics As Usual" in the US.

"As soon as the market clears and we understand where the prices really are ...then those of with lots of money can swoop in and buy them all at bargain basement prices and rent them back to the homeowners at the same price as their mortgage.
We'll make a KILLING!"

Just thought I'd finish the thought process

People who don't know how to solve problems, often get in the way of those who do know how to solve problems. They are afraid everyone will find out how pathetic and useless they really are.

How many government programs are there and they did not work for homeowners? only one million out of four million took advantage? How many homeowners have these loans because they borrowed spent. and now you want to keep coming up with something for people that just spent what they had. Its typical liberal mentality, Just keep spending. what about all the renters? And the homeless people on the streets? These two groups never had enough to buy a house and take out a second and third and then spend it and cry they need more help. where is their help to survive? And what about the illegals in this country, why cant we come up with a program to help them buy a house at our expense. why is it a liberal just wants to change america to a country of collective people. And before you point to some part social countries of europe ask yourself why do so many people all over the world keep wanting to come to the u.s... Those wants used to be for the freedoms we have and the freedom to pursue your desires free from worrying about the government and then the liberals mentality took over and so many come for the free stuff. Look around, see how many organizations have evolved in this country that their only job is to show how to get something for free from the government.

we seem to be in a big hole and people are losing their homes, it's not easy to be homeless. Banks were bailed out, it seems to me capitalism isn't working. the only socialism i see, seems to be of a corporate nature. Guess socialism works for the wealthy and big business, but not citizens. something's wrong.

Once again it is clear that the GOP isn't going to do anything to help those middle class Americans going under but will bend over backward to help the rich. Am so glad that the Speaker made this so clear.

Here's the DEAL Mr. Speaker. You TEA PARTIERS tax the wealth the same rates as all USA citizens and then we can stop the USA government's help for citizens with MORTGAGES gone sour. Until then help for mortgages in declined values gets the help needed.

I have a hard time getting my arms around the fact that republics are so cold and heartless. It really is mind numbing that people can be that way and treat their fellow citizens soooo poorly. I just don't understand. How do they sleep at night?
