Toilet Texting, Bathroom Browsing On The Rise, Study Says

Toilet Texting

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/ 1/2012 10:05 am Updated: 02/ 1/2012 11:31 am

There's no escape from smartphones these days, not even in the bathroom. In fact, a new study says that 75 percent of Americans admit to using their smartphones while on the toilet.

Toilet texting is particularly popular among those 28 to 35-years-old, with a reported 91 percent of that age group admitting to the habit.

Even more disturbing, 1 in 5 men admit to taking it a step further by phoning into business meetings from the bathroom. But they aren't alone; 13 percent of women also owned up to joining conference calls from the can.

Men and women are pretty much equal when it comes to general usage, though. Approximately the same number of men (74%) and women (76%) have used the phone in the bathroom.

As testimony to our society's communication obsession, 24 percent of mobile users reported they actually don't go to the bathroom without their phones.

The report also found 87 percent of Android users are likely to use their phones in the bathroom, compared to 84 percent of BlackBerry users and 77 percent of iPhone users.

Meanwhile, BlackBerry users are most likely to answer a call on the toilet, while Android and iPhone users are more likely to visit social-networking sites or use other apps.

The 11mark survey was conducted online and gathered responses from 1,000 Americans.

The study probably doesn't come as a huge surprise considering a recent report from Mashable indicating that 16 percent of cellphones were found to have fecal matter on them.

For toilet texters truly devoted to the interactive throne, there are even t-shirts to commemorate the embarrassing habit.

Perhaps this explains the growing wave of outbreaks. It is the same or worse to other nationalities in places infested by parasites such as Africa ... but unlike the africans, americans have access to basic sanitation and schools, just don't care much for that ...

That explains why I am finding more pee on the seats in public toilets. I still don't understand how those of my sex can actually end up with their feces all over the wall behind the toilet, unless they stand up very excitedly before finishing their business. I think it is funny to see folks who are used to using their hands to talk, actually using their hand to make motions while talking on a cell phone.

Texting I can maybe understand, but it still totally grosses me out on those few occasions when I'm talking to someone on the phone and suddenly I hear a toilet flush.

Sorry, TMI for me. ( For the Facebook/Twitter Group: I don't discuss
politics or religion nor text or speak where I flush. End of discussion.)

I don't do that. I refuse to. Even if I am home alone, and I hear the phone ring, if I am on "the throne", that person who I just missed CAN call back.

At first I thought it was kind of unsettling to hear "Angry Birds" from behind the closed bathroom door...now I guess its better than what I could be hearing!
