Five Foods You Should Never Eat Again (And What To Eat Instead)

Posted: 02/ 2/2012 7:02 am

Winter weight gain is a common problem, when the idea of heading out for a jog, swim or bike ride isn't exactly enticing. Huff/Post50 recently spoke with Kevin Haag, 41, owner of K2 Performance Training, a fitness center in New Jersey, about simple food choices that help stave off those extra pounds.

"People have to pay a little more attention when they get older," Haag said. "Every year over 50, the rule 'you are what you eat' applies a little more." Check out our slideshow below for five foods Haag suggests you should never eat again -- and some delicious, healthy alternatives.

comparing Wonder bread with sprouted bread is a false dichotomy.
Both are inedible.
There are many nutritious, delicious and fresh whole wheat breads one can buy from a local bakery. Especially in the cities with large European immigrant areas.

You shouldn't really be eating bread and rice, anyways... of any kind, but I guess whole grain is better than white.

I don't think your statement is entirely accurate.

This is a great article! Eating whole wheat and brown rice (whole grains) is much healthier than eating refined wheat and white rice. The extra fiber makes a big difference and the whole grains have anti-oxidants. On April 4, 2012 there was the first Whole Grains Sampling day. Also there is a huge difference between the sugar that has no nutrients in it at all except carbs and fruits that are loaded with phytochemicals and antioxidants. http://bit.ly/yCZhTY

Toxicologist Dr Herbert Pierson worked for the NCI. He found that citrus fruits have 58 known anticancer chemicals in them. There is a big difference between eating good carbs and bad carbs. They have been telling people for decades to not eat fried foods.

I love the Ezekial 4:9 Bread. My biochemist recommended it. It makes wonderful french toast

You have a "biochemist"?

That's both interesting and scary...

I do all of these things. Like they said, sugar is the worst. Now I have such a reaction after eating sugar (Im short of breath) its not worth it. Because of sugar, I am hypoglycemic

Great tips, however, it takes more money for food to abide by these suggestions. The cost, not to mention the quality, of fresh fruit is prohibitive for most of us on limited incomes. One thing that I feel should have been included are dry beans, cooked of course. Hummus and the like hold a lot of good stuff and an overwhelming amount of protein for the buck.

You would do well if you can cut back on something else to eat more fruits and buy them in season when prices are lower. I am poor but I choose to eat healthier for my situation. Frozen fruits are reasonable as well. Think about this, would you want to have to suffer ill health later which you will have to pay out of pocket if you don't have medical insurance or to eat healthier to stave off illnesses. Once you can answer that question honsestly, you will choose the best for yourself. Good luck.

Lists like this do people a disservice. For example, white rice is a staple of the traditional Japanese diet and they have some of the lowest rates of obesity, diabetes and cancer in the world. Similarly, fried foods can be a healthy part of your diet depending on what is fried, what it is fried in, and whether fried foods are eaten in moderation.

Eating fried food wont make you ill. The oils will actually help your body to pass the wastes, lube dry skin, and lube your joints. Eating it three times a day 7 days a week could cause problems. Eating it twice a week is perfect.

No Rembrandt. Your body needs cholesterol to function. What it doesn't need is too much cholesterol. Eating two fried food meals a week is fine. Living on it is bad....Al-

Just wanted to point out on the sugar, yes, it is better to eat fresh fruit instead of white sugar. But if you need sugar, there are many choices that are better for you starting with brown sugar, raw sugar, honey, molasses, etc. Good article, but maybe just a little bit limiting.

Nutritionists, as Felipe Fernández-Armesto wisely pointed out, are people who hate and fear food. Any advice from a nutritionist has to be understood in this light.

Just a few comments on some of these spectacularly holier-than-thou recommendations:

Fried foods - I just read a respected Spanish study that shows that frying per se has no health drawbacks at all vis a vis other preparation methods. You just need to use a good oil and realize that it is caloric food.

Brown rice: This is a western ascetic heath-nut fantasy. If it's yucky, it must be good for you. No Asian person eats brown rice unless they are on some hippy trip. Rice is largely starch, duh, but not super caloric. You just need to eat it with other stuff, vegetables and a protein. Like Asians do.

White sugar: In its place. I sprinkle a spoonful of white sugar on fruit so that my kids will eat it. Otherwise, they just leave it and sneak a Jello later. Banish white sugar and your kids will source it at school on the black market. Don't be a fool.

Finally, nunc lento sonitu dicunt, morieris. And whoever has had the least fun when they die loses.

Enjoyed reading your comments, Thomas. I believe that moderation is the key when it comes
to food. I think for example you can have some white sugar in your diet, one just has to limit
your amounts. This goes for salt as well. As far as fried foods, I personally try and avoid
preparing food that way. I think the title of this article "Five Foods You Should Never Eat
Again (And What To Eat Instead ) could be interpreted as somewhat intimidating by some
people. For me, moderation is the key. I myself find the Canada Food Guide quite helpful.

I'm going to disagree with you about brown rice. I like it. Prefer the taste over white rice.

It also seems to work better for fried rice.
