Howard Stern Tells Letterman He Won't Go On Leno To Promote 'America's Got Talent' (VIDEO)

For David Letterman's 30th anniversary show celebrating three decades on late night television, he invited one of his favorite guests, Howard Stern, to "The Late Show." While there, Stern confirmed his loyalty to Letterman by telling the host that despite working for NBC as a judge on "America's Got Talent," he refuses to go on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to promote the show.

He described meeting with NBC executives about promoting the show. "They sat down and said, you'll do 'The Today Show,' and of course you'll do Jay Leno," Stern told Letterman. "And I shot them a look and said, 'You know I'm a Letterman guy.'"

Of course, the feud goes back two decades, when Letterman felt that he had been passed over for the "Tonight Show" job upon Johnny Carson's retirement in favor of his friend Leno. In 2010, history repeated itself when Conan O'Brien took over "The Tonight Show," before NBC decided to give the show back to Leno after seven months. Throughout the ordeal, Letterman gleefully mocked Leno on the air for several weeks.

Stern has made his distaste for Leno clear over the years. When O'Brien was first announced as the "Tonight Show" host, Stern made an appearance on "Late Night" where he predicted that Leno would try to take back the show.

Many were shocked when Letterman called a "truce" with Leno last month.

Turns out, Letterman's heart may not have been in it. He told Stern last night that he called the truce because he had said some nasty things on the air about Leno lately, and wanted to backpedal. To boot: "If Jay Leno wins the People's Choice Award, it'd be like hearing that Manson has been paroled."

In 2011, Letterman beat Leno in the ratings for the 18-49 demographic for the first time since 1994.

Yes how smart of people, blame Leno for the NBC executives' decision in BOTh cases (being named as the new Tonight Show host and him being sent back to host the show after Conan's stint as host). What nobody seems to understand is that Leno has a contract with NBC, he was obligated to come back. Also, no matter how funny you think Conan in, the Tonight Show ratings SUCKED with him as host. All I see in Letterman is a bitter old man who will forever live in Leno's shadow. Each time he mocks Leno he just reminds me why he didn't get the gig at The Tonight Show. I've met Leno myself, he is extremely down to Earth for such a successful host.

I loves it when Howard comes by because Letterman can put the broadcaster professionalism Johnny taught him aside and keeps it real.

Anybody who has worked with or been around Leno knows he's a jerk, and the most unfunny among comedians

HI-LARRY-US! Especially the Rhianna joke and the Jay Leno impression. Genius.

I don't like everything Stern does, but admire his loyalty to Letterman, whom I also prefer to Leno.

Stern has way more in common with Leno than Letterman; both are has-been hacks who have been coasting on name recognition and late-80s/early-90s fame for 20 years. HOOHoohoo Robin I uh, invented the televised talent show HOOOHOOHOO.

It was years before I ever heard Howard on air (radio) that I saw him on Letterman and became a fan.

Great show last night! Love Howard! Team Dave!

Stern also hates Leno because he believes that Leno has consistently stolen bits from the Stern show. Which he probably has. Jay steals from everybody.

When multiple writers for Leno's show are on Stern's Super Fan Roundtable (and say they listen EVERY day), it seems pretty obvious that much of Jay's material (horrible though most of it is) is at a minimum inspired by Howard...when it's not just outright lifted from the page.

What's sad is that both Howard and Dave had Leno on when nobody knew who he was (back when he was a "comedian's comedian"...ie poor). Loyalty. Leno was made for Hollywood.
