'Lunch Scholars' Video Reveals American Teens Can't Answer Basic Trivia (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/ 2/2012 12:28 pm Updated: 02/ 5/2012 10:54 am

If there was ever a movie to make you laugh to keep from crying, it's this one.

Austin, an intrepid young student-reporter, embarks on the noble mission of answering the question, "How much basic knowledge do American high school students really have?" The answer, however, may not be exactly what you want to hear.

"Do you know the vice president of The United States?" Austin asks.

"I don't know who it it's, it's, it's somebody....Bin Ladin," one student responds.

The video continues in similar fashion, asking everything from, "In what war did America gain independence?" (which no one answered correctly without a hint) to "What countries border America?"

Comedy aside, the United States' poor international rankings in subject proficiencies such as math is a problem that could cost the country around $75 trillion over 80 years, according to a study called "Globally Challenged: Are U.S. Students Ready to Compete?"

Based on the research, U.S. students place behind 31 other countries in math proficiency, and behind 16 other countries in reading.

Paul Peterson, a Harvard government professor, notes the effect this could have on the economy.

"If we're going to grow at the rate that we hope to grow at to address the many issues that exist in our society, we need to have a powerful educational system that is producing a highly proficient workforce," Peterson told HuffPost in October.

Finland shocked the world with their scores on the 2000 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) --an international exam for 15-year-olds where it ranked first for reading proficiency. By 2009, the country inhabited the top of the roster in reading, second in science and sixth in math.

A 2010 study by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) showed the U.S. history testing scores are "stagnant," with only 9 percent of fourth graders correctly identifying a photograph of Abraham Lincoln and stating two reasons for his importance.

Lee White, executive director of the National History Coalition, says the problem stems from history's place in American curriculum.

"They've narrowed the curriculum to teach to the test. History has been deemphasized," he said. "You can't expect kids to have great scores in history when they're not being taught history."

Watch the video above.

UPDATE 2/5/2012 10:50 A.M.: The two student journalists who created the video have issued a statement. From KIRO-TV:

"The video that we made as a school project has received a lot of unexpected media attention, and has been co-opted into an ongoing political debate that has become quite volatile. It should be known that we filmed for several hours, during which time many students gave correct responses; the film represents a short segment of the most entertaining answers. The bottom line is that we made the video to get a few laughs around our school, and it turned into something bigger. It was not our intent to polarize people, set off a firestorm, or get people to point fingers. Having said that, people will take from it what they will. We want to continue our work as student journalists in a productive manner."

Accuse teens of lacking "basic" knowledge.....Only ask them trivial history & social studies questions that won't benefit them in the working world.

Who cares if they don't know the capital to a state they've never been to? Can they count to 10? Do they know their ABCs? Can they spell better than a 5th grader? Those are the basics. Of course, the answer to "can they spell" is "no."

They didn't know their own state capital. They didn't know the Presidential candidates of the last election. They didn't know who was the vice president (guesses included Clinton, Bush, Bin Laden and "that bald guy"). They didn't know what war the US was created from (most chose the Civil War or "that war"). They didn't know what nations border the USA ("South America" was a popular response). They didn't know how many stars are on the flag or how many states there are (52, 52, 53).

You think these kids will be able to function in the world without this basic knowledge of their own nation?

This is total BS. The 'naive' creators of this video, who should've realized what happens when you post video on the internet had this to say:

"The video that we made as a school project has received a lot of unexpected media attention, and has been co-opted into an ongoing political debate that has become quite volatile. It should be known that we filmed for several hours, during which time many students gave correct responses; the film represents a short segment of the most entertaining answers. For an example of some kids from a school near me having fun with a tri-state competition who ended up as champs for the state of CT, try watching this video: http://www.msgvarsity.com/s/4ZA3

I watched many of these competitions, and while it may be the northeast, I'm sure you'll find plenty of kids like this in every good school in this country.

.

Leno used to have a funny bit where he went out into the streets to ask people questions like "Who painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?" and they wouldn't know the answer, but when asked to name the Teenage Mutant Turtles the first name up was Michelangelo.

So don't get too down on these kids. I've seen this same video using adults.

I'd love to hear the answers to the old "If a plane crashes on the border of Canada and the US where do you bury the survivors" question or better yet what weighs more a ton of feathers or 2000 lb of steel?

These questions are ridiculous, and if any American over the age of 10 can't answer them, we have NO hope.

These questions are culture shock for those students. They are being asked questions but are not being given multiple choice answers. Who expects students to come up with their own answers? Heck! How can they be expected to know how many stars are on the US flag or who the current Vice President is without being given choices? More than that, we know kids don't read newspapers and if they get their "news" from TV then how are they supposed to know anything about the world beyond what their fb friends had for breakfast and who is going to which concert and how many people "liked" their last comment. C'mon people! Let's get real, already.

Exactly. Getting real means acknowledging that we're raising generation after generation of indifferent idiots ("Liiiiiike, how could I know, like, anything about that? Like, I wasn't even, like, born yet!")
As a college instructor, I have to deal with this mentality and speech pattern more and more with every year.
08:36 AM on 06/15/2012
But that is something quite different. I think if you ask our university and college teachers you might find that they had similar complaints about our use of language and our choice of verbal markers and fillers. I don't think that there is any correlation between intelligence (your "indifferent idiots" ) and the use of verbal markers.

I don't think that this is a brilliant paper but you may be interested in one piece of research into such markers http://www.nationalforensics.org/journal/vol22no2-3.pdf written in 2004 by Stephen Croucher. He offers some thoughts on the cultural (not cognitive) sources of contemporarry fillers but offers no solid evidence for his point.

Well, no, liberals did nothing of the kind. Where do you get your information?
11:12 AM on 07/02/2012
Listen I'm 21 yrs old, pregnant, and married and I knew all these answers. Children in society today have changed and could care less about doing something with themselves, and would rather look pretty, have tons of friends, or party. Parents and teachers don't challenge these kids enough. Something needs to be done about this generation otherwise there will be no hope for a future.

No wonder Palin got as far as she could and made millions....she connected to the youth of the
country. Scary. Remember when Sarah was caught off guard in that interview.
Oh yeah, they should have asked if Russia could be seen from Alaska.
This is scary. It is the one comfort about being old. I won't be around to see them grow up.

After removing your foot from your mouth, you might Google Diomede Islands. Life will less embarassing.

That Palin, Pelosi, Boner, and The O'Bamabot made it as far as they did begs the question, "Who is responsible for teaching (indoctrinating) these poor kids?"

You made the argument for the deficiencies. No fast food business? Not being able to properly present your position may limit your plans. "um, gonna, um" Really? The minute you took fingers to keyboard you made the argument of educational deficiencies. And it isn’t all the fault of teachers.

No matter how smart you are, you have to demonstrate certain basic skills in order to perform in businesses where talking is a requirement. That is not a political ideology. That is called the real world. Own a business? Your skill set will be even more important as you approach professionals for funding assistance in your start-up. Another problem is attitude. Your defensive belligerence is a liability. While lack of knowledge could compromise your goals, your attitude makes you psychologically unemployable. You defensively attribute this opinion to a group; that is called prejudice which means to "pre judge" so, while you attribute anything you don't like to a certain group, while you categorize that group under your heading you are doing that which places you in the same category. Post again in ten years or so. Bring us up to date. That is a win win for you. If you are astonishingly successful you can take an "I told you so" position or if you have not achieved success you can blame it on a specific group.
