Obama National Prayer Breakfast Speech: President Links Economic Policies With Faith

JULIE PACE   02/ 2/12 10:22 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — Blending politics and religion, President Barack Obama said his Christian faith is a driving force behind his economic policies, from Wall Street reform to his calls for the wealthy to pay higher taxes.

Obama's remarks Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast were his most explicit account of how his personal religious beliefs factor into his decision-making on the nation's pressing problems. The comments came amid election-year criticism from Catholic groups and some Republicans that the president is waging a war on religion following his decision to require church-affiliated institutions to cover free birth control for employees.

Speaking to more than 3,000 people at the annual breakfast, Obama said "faith and values" should play as much as role in tackling the nation's challenges as sound decision-making and smart policies.

He said, for example, that his own call for fairness in the tax code – a central tenet of his State of the Union address and his 2012 campaign – is both economically sound and consistent with the teachings of Jesus.

"If I'm willing to give something up as somebody who's been extraordinarily blessed, and give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy, I actually think that's going to make economic sense," he said. "But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus's teaching that `for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.' It mirrors the Islamic belief that those who've been blessed have an obligation to use those blessings to help others, or the Jewish doctrine of moderation and consideration for others."

He also said the Wall Street reform he championed both "makes the economy stronger for everyone" and abides by God's command to "love thy neighbor as thyself" because it helped people who had been hurt or treated unfairly by financial institutions.

And Obama said he believed in a "biblical call" to care for the poor and to follow "the responsibility we're given in Proverbs to `Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.'"

The president's remarks came one day after Mitt Romney, the front-runner for the Republican nomination, created a flap with clumsy comments about the poor.

Romney said wasn't concerned about the "very poor" because they have a safety net. He also said he wasn't concerned about the very rich and intended to focus his campaign on the middle class.

"You can focus on the very poor; that's not my focus," Romney said.

While the White House said the president's remarks were not meant to be political, his comments did fit neatly into the Obama campaign's effort to draw sharp contrasts between the president and Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor is among Republicans who have criticized the president for not exempting religious organizations from a requirement in the 2010 health care law that requires insurers to cover birth control for their employees. Romney said this week that the president was ordering "religious organizations to violate their conscience."

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said Obama has "declared war on the Catholic Church," and House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday the mandate violates the Constitution.

Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum castigated the policy and Obama's remarks during a campaign stop in rural Fallon, Nev.

"He made the claim that his policies of taxing the rich is authorized by the Bible, that he is doing what is biblically called for by taxing the rich, by having the government tax the rich. Now, I've read the Bible, and I must have missed that passage," Santorum told reporters.

"This is an administration that attacks religion, and then tries to cloak itself in religion in order to take your money."

Obama never mentioned the health care controversy in his remarks Thursday, nor did he reference his Republican rivals by name. But his broader defense of his policies was a rare interjection of politics into the annual prayer breakfast. The breakfast is organized by bipartisan congressional lawmakers, but speakers often avoid overt political references beyond calling for civility and respect in Washington.

While Obama speaks often about his faith, he prefers to worship in private. He said Thursday that he starts each morning with a brief prayer, then spends time reading scripture. Sometimes, he said, pastors come to the Oval Officer to pray with him, for his family and for the country.

He also described his own religious transformation in deeply personal language Thursday, from growing up in a non-religious home to finding Christ later in his life. He recalled a visit a few years ago with the evangelist Rev. Billy Graham, which ended with the president feeling compelled to pray for the aging Graham.

Obama said when he found himself at that moment not knowing what to say, the Holy Spirit interceded.

"I have fallen on my knees with great regularity since that moment, asking God for guidance not just in my personal life and my Christian walk, but in the life of this nation and in the values that hold us together and keep us strong," he said.

Thank you Mr President for stating that yes we need to consider our values/beliefs when dealing with our problems. Thank you

"While Obama speaks often about his faith, he prefers to worship in private."

No, he doesn't. He preaches the godhead of the state, headed by his vision, and cramming it down our throats, all the time; hand-outs for everybody, paid for by...your children.

What a pathetic, small, petty man is Obama, looking down on we the great unwashed, subjects of Obama, the convergence of religions, the chosen one.

Unbelievable.

Obama needs to learn a lesson from the Jesuit page book on liberation theology. It is the same lesson the Pharisees failed at during Jesus' time and what happens when one mixes religion with politics.

Wow. Now both the Dems and the Reps are speaking to god about public policy. Since when are Christians the only people with the moral and ethical standing to guide this country? We have on the one hand our last president, whose faith guided us into two wars - one just, the other a fantasy - that has left thousands of young American physically and mentally scarred. While the rest of us were told to go shopping.

And now we have his successor, whose economic decisions we are now led to believe are also faith based. After all of that shopping, we are personally and institutionally broke and appear to be looking to fix the tax code by reading the bible. (The tax code has more pages, and while it is complicated, unlike the bible, it is pretty hard to misinterpret).

So... does god absolve us of making poor decisions that affect 300 million people? And if god is making public policy, there really is no point in blaming whatever poor sap sits in the white house - its not his fault.

Now, if we want to have a discussion about ethics and morality in society, I am all for it. Most faiths - yes, even Islam for you haters out there - teach basic civility and how to get along with other human beings. If you really dig into it, most religions are at their core the same - there is a great deal of common ground.

Sorry, But Christianity is not at all like all faiths. We have a Savior who dies and was buried and rose again. A Free Gift from God to enter heaven
04:52 PM on 03/18/2012
How sorry I am for Christians who think they have a free gift to enter heaven, and then they will be asked as to their deeds while on earth. oh oh
As to the Christian faith being different to all other faiths again more arrogance and lack of humility that Jesus tried to teach them.

I am Buddhist. I come from a family that is equally Muslim and Christian. I don't have a problem with people subscribing to a faith. I believe everyone should believe in something whether that is God, Jehovah, Allah, or Science. My problem is when you use your belief system for selfish reasons or to excuse hurting others. No matter what you believe in the one common thread that most people subscribe to is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If people would just remember that and subscribe to that rule then the world would be in a much better place.

And for those commenting that Democrats don't want people to be rich, where are you getting that idea? Why does my belief that we have a responsibility to help the less fortunate mean that I don't want other people to be rich? I have no problem with people being rich. I have a problem with people getting rich at the expense of others. I also don't understand people who have so much but don't feel the need to assist those who have so little. I'm a struggling college student who works part time and I still donate money and volunteer my time with worthy organizations. I realize that while I don't have much, I'm in a much better position than so many others.

"Blending politics and religion."
Interesting. Now when I talk about faith, morality, values and other similar things in my posts, I will cite this commentary from the President, that all of the above DO have a place in government. thank you Mr. President.

You meant true Christians -- do we hear it? What I hear is a man who cherry pick scripture to get his agend justified by a subgroup to gain more votes in the next election. Here's a clue: we not only know the Word of Grace (called the Bible), but WE rightly align scriptures -- IN CONTEXT. Matt.25 talks about the talents given by a master ( hint - the Master is God - talents, while in this passage refer to money, but actually you talents are given you to take to market to earn an income.) Anyway, the one who did nothing w/his talent had it taken away and given to -- guess, just guess who. THE ONE WITH THE MOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The Bible clearly teaches, if a man is idol, if s/he won't work, then he IS NOT TO EAT. Namely, no help, no freefies! Why? THINK!!! The whole of the WORD is true -- you can't take a scipture and assign any meaning you want to it. There are doctrines that bear witness to each other. Satan did what Obama did - he twisted scripture to accomodate his mission. Jesus answered w/the true WORD of God. The only Christians this guy will fool are babies, those in churches who do not teach the whole of the WORD & those who are LAZY and never studied the truth. Hear that lib's?

I'm not a Christian, but I at least hope that this would do more to hurt President Obama's campaign than it would help if this is what he actually believes that means or what he'd relate it to. Not in the sense that I'm for or against anyone, just that I'd rather I not be too right about people...

Dynamic, thank you for your comments on this. Some politicians will even blaspheme to get a vote. It is too sad that they are so many unlearned citizens who believe everything they hear and do not seek the truth.

Well, I agree that we should all give more but not to the government but to the charities we wish to support.

Wonder what St Paul says?
All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them. If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Come on - why do you use scritpures to justify poverity? Hint: this scripture focus on THE LOVE of mony, to the exculsion of putting God first. The whold of the Word is true: Deut..8: 18 tells it accurately.
New International Version (©1984)
But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today

By remember means to put HIM FIRST. Abraham was wealthy, Isaac was wealthy, Jacob and Esau -- and so on. EMPTY HANDS HAVE NOTHING TO GIVE. So learn the accurate prosperity doctrine and quit peddly scarcity and poverity. It's error. Let Him lead, and do THE WORK. Income will come.

I'm confused, it seems like a lot of the pot shots taken at Republicans are based on religion. How do Obama supporters feel about this? Only 18 comments? Seems hypocritical to me.
