Rolling Stone Mouth-Shaped Urinals Called Sexist (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 02/ 2/2012 1:20 pm Updated: 02/ 2/2012 1:21 pm

Once upon a time the Rolling Stones lamented that they couldn't get no satisfaction. Today, the Rolling Stones Fan Museum in Germany has similar woes, since it's under fire from feminists who have taken issue with the museum's urinals.

The iconic urinals are in the shapes of a big, juicy pair of red lips -- the Rolling Stones logo. The logo was originally modelled off Mick Jagger's iconic pout, created in 1971 by art designer John Pasche. Yet the urinals remove the tongue and brighten the original icon, making the already androgynous Jagger mouth appeal quite womanly. And, needless to say, feminists are pissed.

Roda Armbruster called the urinals "discrimination against women," and her sentiments are shared by a growing number of people in Germany and internationally.

The curious twist is that these urinals were designed by a woman, Dutch artist Meike van Schijndel of 'Bathroom Mania'. Should this fact affect whether a work is viewed as sexist? Or are we blaming van Schijndel for internalized sexism?

Finally, as one never too far from controversy, Khloe Kardashian recently is said to have purchased one of van Schijndel's mouth-shaped urinals for her Los Angeles abode.

The museum owner, Ulli Schroder, replied to the controversy: "That's not a man's mouth or a woman's mouth, that's art. They were damned expensive and they're staying where they are and that's final."

What do you think? Is labeling something as 'art' an excuse to produce something offensive without consequence? Or do you want a lip-lined urinal of your own, consequences be damned?

If you don't like it, mind your own business. This is private property, and it doesn't matter what people say, they do not have the right to infringe upon other peoples rights. If they want these urinals, then they can have these urinals. Some unrelated group takes offense to something they have nothing to do with, and then using said issue to impose their will on others. Ridiculousness.

men pissing into a female looking mouth? whats offensive in that? *eye roll*
If its "art-" then lets see toilets with a mans mouth- and mustache- in the same bathroom, and see how much men enjoy using those.
Bet the toilets with lipstick get used more.

Regardless of the fact of what you may think, these mouths are based on the Rolling Stones logo, based on the lips of a man. Maybe the ones with the mustaches would do well at a Queen museum.

Are white people offended by white urinals and white toilets? Why not?

I wasn't aware that toilets and urinals bore any resemblance to the human anatomy, thanks for your nuanced view that has added so much to the conversation.

These are awesome! People need to chill out. I loved the museum owner's response.

I'd like to see more art urinals....ideas?

SOME people will scream sexism and all that for anything. I once knew a woman who would get pissed if someone said women were frail and couldn't take care of themselves and were just looking for a man to treat them like a queen, yet She would get pissed if the door wasn't opened for her.

Your anecdata about that women doesn't make pissing into a feminine mouth any less sexist.

maybe, but STILL better than a vagina shaped urinal..

The original art was inspired by Mick's mouth, but most people don't know that and assume female due to the "painted" look of the red lips. Could they be considered art? As a porcelain sculpture hung on a wall.... ok... Not art I get or appreciate more than as an intellectual exercise but ok. As a urinal.... *shudder* That changes everything. Deliberately pissing on something is a nearly universal sign of massive and defiant contempt. The Rolling Stones are known for being pretty sexist, and for me, that fact that an art exhibit of "theirs" has attendees pissing into a stylized and further feminized mouth is more sexism added to the fire. I get that for some it would be a funny inside joke, but I just find it disgusting, although I'm not sure I'd be screaming for them to take it down. Is there some equivalent in the Ladies' loo?

Is there some equivalent in the Ladies' loo?

A mustache on the lid when up, painted mouth open and a fur covered front of the seat (beard) for a soft place to sit. Would that be offensive to men? Or a pleasure to the ladies?

Ick...I don't want to think about the kind of disgusting things that would get trapped by the toilet "mustache". No thank you.

Not really art, not really sexist either. Roda needs to chill but she probably has her own issues. Aren't there real attacks against women that she can worry about. Apparently Roda doesn't swallow.

Don't know what _any_ of them were thinking. But if it's art, it's not the sort that will get me through the door to see it.

Let me get this straight...Some chick is mad because men are peeing in urinals that are like Mick Jagger's mouth? Really. Note to chick: Mick is a dude. Get over yourself. I'm sure there are better wars to fight. See Newt Gingrich (Chief Cheater) runs for Republican Nomination. Some chicks get offended over anything ... it's like they are looking for something to be offended over. The whole time they thinks it's okay to inject botutulism into their faces, glue toxic waste on their nails, and paint their faces with animals parts used in makeup. I am so confused. Geez.
