Susan G. Komen Foundation Website Apparently Hacked After Planned Parenthood Controversy

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation's website appeared to be hacked briefly early Thursday morning.

A banner on the website was changed from "help us get 26.2 or 13.1 miles closer to a world without breast cancer" to "help us run over poor women on our way to the bank."

The nation's leading breast-cancer charity halted its grants to Planned Parenthood affiliates Tuesday. Planned Parenthood said the grants totaled $680,000 last year and $580,000 the year before for breast-cancer screening and other related services.

The Huffington Post's Laura Bassett reported that the move came less than a year after the Komen foundation hired a new vice president, Karen Handel, who publicly stated her opposition to Planned Parenthood in her 2010 campaign for governor of Georgia. The foundation said that the cutoff comes as the result of new rules adopted by the organization barring grants to organizations under investigation by local, state or federal authorities. Planned Parenthood is the focus of an inquiry by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) over its handling of federal funding.

Since the Komen foundation cut ties, Planned Parenthood has seen a huge influx in donations, including an announcement Thursday that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg would be donating $250,000.

jbg9617: I have no problem giving women care in a clinic. When a public subsidized service accepts extra money from foundations, there should be oversight to see that the money is used correctly and no corruption. Don't they have a morning after pill for rape?

carmenalex: it was actually interns working for Ingraham in Washington who were searching for a place that offered these services. You just can stand to hear anything that contradicts your mindset. If they don't offer mammograms and such, people should find out why they don't. I don't deny women care, and you have missed the point. You are too busy attacking.

I find it telling that "pro-life" partisans are continuously wailing and rending their clothes over the "death of innocents" yet never a word from this same group over the deaths of Iraqui children at the hands of their President, the infamous Bush 2. As I recall as a group they just loved the whole "shock and awe" criminality paid for with my tax dollars. You people should pick a position and stick with it. Are you "pro-life" or just frauds?

It looks like Komen and it's "leadership" is taking a page right out of Rmoney's flip-flop playbook. The page is entitled "How to backpedal in a New York minute and then lie through your teeth about it."
11:37 AM on 02/04/2012
Not so, apparently they never said they would renew the funding to Planned Parenthood; in my view just trying to stem the flood of donors bailing out of the Komen charity. She is trying to have her cake and eat it after getting shelled by anti Planned Parenthood groups. She has lost all credibility with many donors and I don't think we have seen the end game yet.

Politics is it's own reward and if they wish to be disingenous, let them enjoy their reward. PP has the upper hand and Komen is on the ropes.

This makes you wonder why is it even necessary to donate to middlemen and pass-through organizations? If I give you my money that doesn't give you the right to use it for your politics.

They sure haven't made many friends with this PR fiasco. The hacking of their site is collateral damage and something not really necessary: I, for one, would prefer that people do away with their ribbons and donate to cancer philanthropies that truly work for the cause. The foundation has shown its true colors and they are ugly and mean.

Federal Funding or PP comes from Title X grants

Title X Statutes and Regulations

Section 1001 of the Act, as amended, authorizes grants "to assist in the establishment and operation of voluntary family planning projects which shall offer a broad range of acceptable and effective family planning methods and services...

Section 1008 of the Act, as amended, stipulates that "None of the funds appropriated under this title shall be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning."

http://www.hhs.gov/opa/title-x-family-planning/

Annual submission of the Family Planning Annual Report (FPAR) is required of all Title X family planning services grantees for purposes of monitoring and reporting program performance (45 Code of Federal Regulations [CFR] Part 742 and 45 CFR Part 923). FPAR data are presented in summary form, which protects the confidentiality of individuals who receive Title X-funded services (42 CFR Part 59).

"...as amended..." is the key here. As amended by whom and for what purpose? Abortion is not a "method of family planning" any more than rape is a method of same. The amended language is just another bad-faith GOP attempt to roadblock access to health services and impose their morality on a nation far less interested in conservatives and their irritating values than they dare admit.
