'A Day In The Life Of San Francisco' Memorializes Our Dear City (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/ 3/2012 8:00 pm Updated: 02/ 3/2012 8:39 pm

My how we love a good, wholesome piece of San Francisco porn.

A new video from the tourism bureau showcases our fair city at its finest, bringing viewers along for a three-and-a-half minute adventure through the staples, from a bike ride along the Golden Gate Bridge and a romp through the park to dinner at the finest restaurants and a night out on the town.

Sure, most of what the footage showcases is pretty predictable, and we can think of a million better days in the life of San Francisco (Kite Hill, anyone?), but anyone with a pulse has a soft spot for aerial skyline views and cars winding down Lombard Street. Especially when played to a sappy, violin-laden soundtrack.

Okay, okay, we'll admit it: We got goosebumps by the end. Long live the greatest city on earth!

Greatest city on earth?? Clearly you haven't been to NYC, Sydney, Rome, Paris, Hong Kong or Tokyo. San Francisco may not even be the greatest city on the West Coast of North America think Vancouver. I lived in SFO for 12 years and finally came to the realization that it was without a doubt the coldest, dreariest, most economically cyclical, socially inept town on earth. It does however have good restaurants...

Okay, first, anyone who wants to watch this should let the whole thing load first. It took about half and hour on my computer. Okay, maybe I need a new computer. But then, once it's loaded, it's kind of a yawner. Probably would have been better with Karl Malden.

I don't think this ad was made by a San Franciscan. Our City is not about postcards for tourists. It's about intimate moments with people, bicycling with friends, catching a cable car, taking toddlers to Baker Beach, running to Ft. Point, dogs chasing each other with lights on at dusk at the top of Bernal Hill, coffee in North Beach, a circus or ballet with a couple hundred people in attendance at the Yerba Buena Gardens - next to a multiplex movie theater. San Francisco is about intimate moments against a spectacular backdrop.

This video does get the soul of the city, which is what makes it different. The very intimate moments. It would have been better to have 5 of such moments with real people who live and visit here rather than a lot of long view snap shots.

This was tourist dreck. We are the tourist city which has managed to remain a hometown. Think about it. We are neighborhoods, families, couples, singles, people hanging out with each other.

And ballet without a close-up? Come on. This video was either made by an out of towner or programmed by some guy from Anaheim or Phoenix - some place without wheres.

San Francisco means something different to every person who lays a foot on its soil, regardless of whether he/she is a tourist or resident. It would be impossible to capture the spirit of the City, because its true essence is only felt through experience.

I love our home!

Totally agree.... The City is about its neighborhoods. Definitely NOT about Pier 39.

The vid was great, however these are some area/aspects they missed! 1. Where are the people of color?? 2. Cool street art (and no, I don't mean graffiti. There is a difference.) 3. The bustle of the financial district. 4. True gay pride -- a gay or lesbian couple holding hands, that's seen everyday in SF. 5. Cool aspects of the neighborhoods like the Mission juxtaposed to the Marina, etc. 6. Asian culture! Where's the Chinese New Year parade? 7. Union Square/shopping! 8. And where are the NINERS??

Hey HP, do you have to just be like all the other puerile smart asses of today by using the word porn? Come on, do you have to employ all jr. high school interns.

Porn is not good. it isn't beautiful. It is just slang, and not good slang at that.
11:22 AM on 02/05/2012
Don't degrade porn by comparing it with tourist dreck. Hey, why didn't you show our real porn palace, where real porn is made - the old Armory on Mission Street. Remember how the neighbors who stopped the old building from being converted to condos reacted to a new buyer making porn movies there!

The answer is not much. Jobs are jobs. Porn palace is somehow appropriate for an old military installation. Who works harder than porn stars? Most of all, the porn makers didn't want to knock any windows in the formidable fortress!

Interesting knowledge. The use of the word porn as an adjective for something good has become another degradation of our language. I have nothing against porn per se, but this usage is a non sequitur at best.

What about the circusy nightlife? There are several circus arts schools here, and it shows with the amount of performances around the city that include juggling, contortion, aerial dance, burlesque, bellydance, and vaudeville.

What about improv, the Marsh, ACT, the Pickle Family Circus, the many street artists? What about the flower sellers on Union Square - oh, they left with I. Magnin? People don't wear flowers in their hair any more...

But there is ice skating on Union Square. What about the reindeer grazing on the roof of the Academy of Science rather than just a dumb PR view of the front of the building, which, to be true, is just another modern yawner.

What about kids playing on the sculptures in the garden of the DeYoung while adults watch them. Message: people love art in San Francisco so much that they interact with it.

What about skate boarders coming down Baumy Alley in the Mission? Or the artist painting a mural talking with a hot tourist who has stopped by on a lovely Saturday afternoon.

What about a young couple holding hands looking up at the fern garden in GG Park in spring? A green lace sky.

Herb Caen said it: San Francisco - the cool gray city of love. You need a shot of the fog coming in in little arms which reach around hills and eventually blanket the whole city for the night. What does the fog do in London? Not much. San Francisco - people draw closer, walk the streets looking at the lights, and smelling the ocean.

I love how they keep changing the headline for this mess. It makes one wonder how many SF tourist lobby dollars are involved.
