Bill Kramer, Wisconsin Assembly Leader, Carries Gun On Floor

Wisconsin Assembly leader Bill Kramer said he's been carrying a concealed weapon during floor sessions, the AP reports.

Kramer, a Republican from Waukesha, said Friday the intense atmosphere of the Wisconsin Capitol made him feel he needed a weapon on the floor.

"Have you been in the Capitol lately?" Kramer said. "The saying is you don't need a gun until you need it. I hope I go to my grave having never fired at anything but a paper target."

Protests have rocked the capitol since February 2011, when Governor Scott Walker's controversial collective bargaining legislation was introduced. The growing protests led Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan (R) to compare them to the uprising in Egypt in February 2011, saying that it was "like Cairo has moved to Madison these days."

The protests have continued since then, with groups taking part in daily lunch-hour sing-alongs in the Capitol rotunda and interrupting committee meetings. One protester even dumped a beer on Rep. Robin Vos (R-Burlington) in September.

In January, Walker's State of the State speech was continuously interrupted by hecklers. Kramer said that throughout the ongoing protests he's received several insults and threatening emails, but insisted he would only draw his weapon if he felt he was in "imminent danger."

Kramer told the AP he obtained a permit under Wisconsin's concealed carry law, which went into effect in November. That law allows people who obtain a permit and go through training to carry concealed weapons in the state capitol as long as no sign is posted saying weapons are not permitted.

Kramer said he owns Glock 26, a subcompact semi-automatic, that he has taken onto the floor at times. The Republican also admitted he's not the only lawmaker carrying a weapon to work.

Unbelievable! I support the right to own guns for several reasons, including being a deterrent to tyranny, self defense against rabid animals in the wild, the rare but real need to have home protection, etc. However, those that go strutting around showing off their firearms are in my opinion, just a bunch of lo sers looking for attention. A gun is a tool. It won't give you more testosterone. If you're  Read More...

He is just listening to the voices. If they tell you that you have to carry a gun when meeting with other politicians, then you do it. The voices are probably telling him some new things that involve the gun....

Congratulations. You have confirmed the violent tendencies of the anti-gun crowd which seems to fantasize about harm coming to those with whom they disagree.

Are the anti-gunners so intellectually limited that they HAVE to immediately start calling someone's manhood and/or equipment into question every time someone is revealed to be or admits to carrying a handgun for self defense? The assumption that law-abiding citizens carry handguns out of fear while the police and military carry them out of bravery and criminals carry them for intimidation fails the logic test every time.

Bill Kramer is not violating the law. End of story. You anti-self-defense people should get lives, or at least clues.

Kramer is not a cop, not a soldier. Criminal? Ask the citizens of his state. Someone other than yourself in the mirror.

He has a perfectly legitimate CCW permit, so what's the problem?

The issue with guns is when we don't enforce laws regarding the people who can own them and carry them.

It would seem that he's following the law, and exercising his rights, and of course I am fine with that. However, I do wonder why he feels the need given the existence of the Capitol police force - does he question their competence?

Second, I need to register my surprise that there isn't a law against possessing weapons at the state capitol. Would a Wisconsinite tell me if it's ok for a CCW permit holder who is not a legislator to carry in the Capitol? What's good for the goose ...
09:30 AM on 02/08/2012
Clearly there is no law against what he's doing, or else his opponents would be pointing it out and shouting it from the rooftops.

As for his faith in the police, one can trust the police and still provide for their own security. The police arn't everywhere, and they won't be with you on the ride to work or the trip home. The choice to legally carry a concealed weapon does indicate a lack of faith in the police, just a desire to protect oneself

You don't have to live in Wisconsin to find that out. Go to the Wisconsin DOJ website click on the concealed carry rules, and the entire CCW law comes up. And according to the law, anyone that has a CCW permit can do the same thing. It's also stated in the article.

Just had to reply by contacting you since you are apparently as big a fan of Geronimo as I have been ever since living on the Chiricahua reservation in Arizona when I was a pre-schooler. I learned a lot there.

Why did I just have to...? Because I posted a comment just before reading your comment; and after it was printed and sent to my facebook page as well, it looks like they removed it from the comments following my response to Ohio9. They probably thought it was frivolous.

Hey HP, how about running an article about Dianne Fienstien's CCW permit. With her being anti-gun AND having one along with the permit to carry. Now that is hypocrital news. Run an article about that.

That's my point. Fienstien has a CCW permit, anti-gun, and Democrate. The only reasons we don't see an article on her are the facts that she is anti-gun and Democrate, and as such, the hero of the mass media. They can't do anything wrong in the eyes of the mass media, even if their whole agenda is one big hypocritical lie. Denies gun rights to every one BUT her.

I dare the HP and/or mass media to run an article about that hypocricy on her part. Delve into the reasons why she has a CCW permit, but yet denies the very same right to own a gun to millions of other people. She owns a gun, but yet doesn't want anyone else owning one.

I don't have a problem with CC. Every gun owner I know is extremely responsible (except for one--ha!) and especially so with their weapons. What bothers me is that a lawmaker feels the need to CC in the state capitol building because of our political climate since the last election....

I'm confused if the assemblyman feels threatened by other lawmakers, or the protesters outside. I suppose he has the right and privilege to carry a gun, but on the other side, he *does* have a reasonably big police force acting as security *right there* ...

I came over here today to discuss the comments of a Wisconsin legislator by the name of Vinehout who is a candidate for Governor and haven't yet relocated the page that I was on. She has more experience as a Wisconsite than Walker who was the son of an itinerant Preacher in Colorado who had no education until the Koch Brothers sent him to Marquette U. so he could become Milw.County executive. He failed to take a degree. A bit like the story of Poppy Bush trying to educate Dick Cheney who could never pass the entrance exam at Yale and so hung out playing cards in the locker room of the football team at UW-Madison while his fiancee did her doctorate in Victorian Literature at the university. Dick hated the hippies who were protesting the war in Vietnam; probably because the continual gassing of the dormitories interfered with his game.

Man legally carries concealed weapon in places he is legally allowed to be. Also, he is a legislator.

HOLY CRAP SOMEONE MAKE SURE THIS MAKES THE NEWS.

I don't see a problem with Wisconsin Assembly leader Bill Kramer exercising his rights, the only problem I see is which "peaceful protestor" is going to make the first mistake.

It is hardly a foregone conclusion that anything is going tp happen to a protestor as a result of person CCing. Actually, there is probably less of a chance of something happening involving a CC person than a non CC person.

I agree, my point (sarcastically) was the protestor would most likely be the one initiating something, not the CC holder.

By the way, John McCain was an excellent boxer while in the Navy. He really needs to remove his fists before entering the Senate chamber.

Oh no!! A gun!!! Ahhhh!!! Scary!!! GOP!! Ah!! Even scarier!!! Probably a Racist!(tm)! Ahh!!!

I wonder why the media doesn't dedicate as much time and energy to exposing the scandal which sent 2000+ illegal guns to Mexico as they do with someone legally exercising a COTUS right.

Oh, wait......it's an election year.
