Christiane Amanpour Offends Stephen Colbert By Implying He's Not 'Serious' (VIDEO)

Christiane Amanpour

First Posted: 02/ 3/2012 11:15 am Updated: 02/ 3/2012 11:47 am

Famed broadcaster Christiane Amanpour appeared on "The Colbert Report" Thursday night and jokingly offended host Stephen Colbert during a discussion about a potentially nuclear Iran. Colbert referred to Amanpour, who was born in Iran, as an "international woman of mystery." He asked if Amanpour knew how close Iran was to acquiring nuclear weapons. "Are we like three years away from being five years away? Or are they one year away from being seven years away?" Colbert asked. He then commented that the U.S. could use its nuclear arsenal to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons. "Well some people are actually talking about potentially using nuclear weapons," Amanpour said. "I just did now. I'm just talking about it now. I'm some people," Colbert said. "Yeah, but serious people!" Amanpour said. It became clear from Colbert's astonished expression and the audience's audible reaction that Amanpour had possibly offended Colbert. "Have you not seen my sandals, madame? These are very serious sandals," Colbert said as he raised his leg above the table to show off his footwear. Amanpour appeared on the program to promote her upcoming CNN International show. Colbert said of CNN International, "it’s just like regular CNN but in metric.” WATCH:

I thought that was a good/funny interview. I didn't pick up that Colbert was in any way offended. I thought Christiane's comment about being serious and Colbert's comeback with the sandals was great. I thought it was two intelligent, quick witted people doing an interview. I enjoyed every minute of it. Christiane got what Colbert was all about and played it beautifully.

Comics tend to be a bright lot. Serious or not they tend to make good points as well. Watch George Carlin sometime. He might convince you not to vote.

Stephen set up the interview perfectly. Christiane was a good sport and got the important message across. The Republican Guard is in charge in Iran. We've known that for the past year, and Ahmadinejad is afraid of them.

Colbert's tongue-in-check lampoons get tiresome ------ much like Howard Stern fart jokes.

Really? I didn't realize you knew me that well. But it's not that he's smart. It's because he's annoying. There really is a difference.

Steven colbert, John Stewart are two lighthouses in a sea of garbage called politics. The reason they are revelant is because teh winner of the republican primaries could god forbid be elected President and rule teh nation. His most avid followers cheer executions, believe that the sick should die if they cant afford medical care, dispise all social programs social sec, medicare , food stamps, help with housing e tc.With almost half of America at the poverty level their policies could prove catastropic to millions. Manyof us do not prefer that type of Americanism.

Is Stephen Colbert not serious? It depends what you mean by serious.

He is the only right wing candidate for President who has a serious and reasonable agenda, ie, exposing how Super Pacs are buying politicians.

Are Mitt, Newt, Rick, and Ron serious? Really?

Stephen is the only candidate who's in on the joke.

I think they are all onto the joke - however, Colbert is the only one that's not a hypocrite about it.

Its not the religious leaders but rather the military and secular leaders who think they are heroic figures capable of vanquishing the rest of the world if given half a chance.

They remind me of Arab military leaders during the various wars with Israel inviting everyone to come by the next day for a free feast to be served in downtown Tel Aviv. Just drive right on up and get your free meals tomorrow. And who can forget the special commemorative victory stamps issued by the Egyptian government just prior to the June 1967 war?

Whatever Israel wants we will do....our politicians that are not bought and paid for by them are scared to death of being targeted by them. QED

I like Amanpour. The story of how she got to be a journalist is very interesting. Google her name and see how she got to be where she is today (and also how she and Jackie Onnasis got to be good friends).

""Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."
