Miley Cyrus: Why I Got My Gay Marriage Tattoo (PHOTOS)

Last August, singer and actress Miley Cyrus added some new ink to her body: a small "equals" sign on her middle finger, in support of same-sex marriage.

The 19-year-old, who has become an activist for gay rights in recent months, has penned a piece for Glamour magazine that explains why she decided to tattoo the cause to her body.

Cyrus writes that the idea of not being able to marry the person you love more than anything in the world makes her "feel sick to her stomach." She explained that when she first shared a photo of her new tattoo on her Twitter page and wrote, "All LOVE is equal," she was mocked and inundated with comments asking: "What happened to you? You used to be a Christian girl!'"

Miley responded with grace to her critics writing, "If you were a true Christian you would have your facts straight. Christianity is about love." The debate resulted in threats and hate mail and eventually led her to asking everyone to just "lay off."

Miley explains in Glamour, "I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties. Without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin color?"

While some might have chided her for the tattoo, many others were impressed with Cyrus, especially when she called out Urban Outfitters CEO Richard Hayne on Twitter for donating money to anti-gay rights politician Rick Santorum's campaign.

"I was shocked and disappointed that a company with such diversity would exclude such a large group of people," she writes in the magazine. "I can no longer bring myself to shop there."

Miley, who also posed for the NOH8 campaign, notes that her even her father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, who is "as Southern and straight as they come," loves her gay friends and supports same-sex marriage, adding, "If my father can do it, anyone can."

Cyrus was recently blasted by the Culture and Media Institute over private photos of the pop star goofing around, posing with a penis-shaped cake. The institute was infuriated, claiming she's "become the epitome of the anti-role model for young girls."

It's true Cyrus has had her fair share of trivial scandals ranging from sexy photos to her alleged affinity for marijuana, but it's also clear that she's matured into a young woman who is passionate about equal rights for all people -- which makes it hard to deny her status as a positive role model.

I can understand why you might Kudos Miley for her stance on gay marriage, but postive role modeling is more than a stance in a single pet cause. If the average person, sans Miley's ample resources, took on the same lifestyle, is it more likely to build them up (positive) or tear them down (negative). That is what role modeling is about. Not taking a stance, as the decision of whether her actions are positive or negative are in the eye of the beholder, but picking a single cause and stating it makes her positive is incorrect.

Thanks, Miley.

As a parent of a 12 year old girl we have been negotiating the world of Disney driven girls and how they are viewed when they come of age and can express themselves. Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus have been a big part of our lives for the last few years as well as the cautionary tale of Lindsay Lohan. I applaud Ms. Cyrus' bravery in being outspoken on this. She could make another series of Disney films with little plot and little meaning, but has chosen to take a more controversial path. For every lgbt kid in school right now this is a reach out that whatever you are going through now it gets better.

Miley should limit her tattoos ala the Dixie Chicks: one for every Grammy. Save money on ink, too.

Celebrities like Miley choose to forget all the "inconvenient" aspects of their religion in order to sustain their careers and fast track hollywood life. How can she herself pick and choose what she likes from the Bible, then feel entitled enough to give people a definition of "true Christianity"?
Here are some facts for Miss Cyrus. Christianity is just as much about living your life modestly, and resisting the temptations life throws at you as it is about love. You have to have a balance of both. This girl goes on stage wearing next to nothing in front of millions, gyrates with older men, does drugs, and inks herself silly. These things are also mentioned in the Bible, yet restraining from these things would mean she would need something called "self discipline" and God knows, thats the hard part about practicing your faith. So sorry, but in my opinion she just sounds like a silly little girl who doesn't know any better.

Everyone picks and chooses what parts of the bible to follow. If they didn't, everyone would be stoning rape victims that didn't cry out loud enough, women wouldn't cut their hair or speak in church, and children would be killed for disobedience.

Pick and Choose from the bible is what christians do best!!!!!
In Bible days, girls were often sold as wives to others. Marriages were arranged for economic or political alliances. Love was not an issue. You were married to whom you were married to. Neither the bride or groom had much of a choice. Such things are "traditional" -- you want to go back to the Bible concept of marriages?

Exactly! Hating gay people is easy, but being 'unclean' for however many days after your menstral cycle isn't, so forget that one! This is what's wrong with religion.

Thank God for Miley Cyrus and I'm glad that she has joined the chorus of gay marriage supporters. I'm a straight married man who knows that Christians followed Jesus and Jesus never said word one on gay marriage. Use that tidbit my friends, it shocks even the most devout Christians!

What the real problem is that we have been misguided of the lord teachings people use the lord to hide behind in sinful ways there are people out there that hate the gays and hate other people in the name of the load and they are false prophets the lord wants you to love others like yours self and pray for them to come to the light. But once you support the sins of another you are as much a sinner as they are. it is never too late repent for your wrong doings and maybe milly is going thought something or the media has got ahold of here

...misguided of the lord teachings????
People said the same thing about ending slavery. Parts of the Bible condone slavery and, the argument goes, freeing black people was "blasphemy" against the Lord.
Once you support the wrongs of another you become stronger as a nation. So stop looking at the sins of others and start looking at our love that refuses hate.

Love her advocacy for all people to marry.
Long ago, only royals could marry. The peasants had common-law marriages, not church weddings. They had a simple ceremony at home w just the parents. A short while back, Jews and Christians could not marry, Catholics and Protestants could not legally marry. Blacks and Whites could not marry. Brown people of all ethnicity and whites were not legally acknowledged in Virginia, 30 mins from DC until the late 1960's! People forget the history of marriage. It has always evolved!

This is the part that worries most, Christianity is about following the bible & living your life pleasing to God. It's about loving others as Jesus loved you, but Jesus didn't walk around having sex with men. It says in the bible to love others as much as yourself, not to judge anyone & forgive others as you would want to be forgiven, but it doesn't say to have sexual relationships with the same sex. We've taken God out of schools & work, but we've replaced it with guns & drugs. We've taken away good morals & replaced them with the garbage they put on the radio & TV condoning same sex relationships & teaching our youth that girls are sex objects. If this is what people will view as Christianity its no wonder more & more elect to run from it & call Christians hypocrites. As Christians we are not perfect but our will to please God makes us want to live more pleasing to Him & as Christians we have to believe people can change. That's what Jesus did, he walked amongst the sinners, because He knew they needed His counsel the most. He died for our sins so we could be saved, God sent a savior because He knew that's what we needed most in this world.

Funny, I thought being religious ( any religion ) was about following G-d. You claim to follow Jesus and his teachings, but yet, you forget to follow the most important one. The religion he believed in. It was not this mockery that you and the rest of the world call Christianity. He was not a christian. He did not participate in the rituals that christians have participated in for thousands of years. There are more than 70 different versions of the christian bible, which one did he follow and believe...None!
If you want to follow Jesus and his teachings, they are about loving yourself, and loving each other and not judging or hating.
10:55 AM on 02/06/2012
Did I say I was judging or hating? NO, I did not. My comment was about what it says in the Bible! The Bible that God had His people write! The Bible that has HIS words written in red! I follow the King James Version personally. I also didn't say Jesus was a Christian! But he did go around telling God's people to follow our Father's Word! I also said Christianity & following Jesus is about loving others as you would love yourself, but it doesn't say to have sexual relationships with the same sex! Jesus did not participate in the rituals followed by anyone for thousands of years, he was an example as to how we SHOULD be living our lives!
09:20 PM on 02/04/2012
Jesus didn't walk around having sex, but the whole point is not to JUDGE others for what they are doing....meaning those who do choose to have homosexual sex should not be judged. It is not YOU who can judge them; God is inside of everyone of those homosexuals that are mocked by people like you. You should treat everyone like so.
11:33 AM on 02/05/2012
The Bible does not say not to judge. It says judge not lest ye be judged. It also does not say to turn a blind eye to every wrong you see being committed. A Christian is to stand up for God's word, not for the sinners wants. God does love everyone. That's why it saddens him to have to say to some" Depart from me, I know you not". If people would study the Bible, instead of taking their favorite celebrity's or tv preacher's word for it, this country would be a better place.
