Mitt Romney Says He 'Misspoke' On 'Very Poor' Comments

Mitt Romney Nevada Caucus 2012

RENO, Nev. -- Mitt Romney said he misspoke when he said he was not very concerned about poor people.

In an interview Thursday with Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston, Romney said his comments were an accidental "misstatement" of a position that he's repeated throughout his presidential campaign.

"I misspoke. I've said something that is similar to that but quite acceptable for a long time. And you know when you do I don't know how many thousands of interviews now and then you may get it wrong. And I misspoke. Plain and simple," he said. "Well what I said was my focus, my primary focus, is helping people get into the middle class and grow the middle class."

He said later that he wasn't running for president because of the wealthy. "The wealthy are doing just fine. I'm not running for president for the wealthy. Who in the world would care about running for president for the wealthy? I'm worried about the great majority of Americans--the middle class of America and the poor that used to be middle class, I want them back in the middle class."

The front-runner in the GOP nomination race said Wednesday in a CNN interview that he was "not very concerned about the very poor" because they have an "ample safety net."

In the interview with Ralston, he also addressed a comment he made previously to the Las Vegas Review-Journal where he said, "Don't try to stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom." Nevada also is the state hardest-hit by foreclosures in the nation.

"When I say 'don't stop the foreclosure process' what I mean by that is the best way to stop it is by getting the economy going so home values rise and people can meet their obligations," he said. "That's the best way to stop foreclosures. The idea of the government stepping in and trying to delay the process--that only continues to have the overhang of foreclosures and declining home values."

"The right course is not to say 'let's have the government write big checks to people,'" he said.

Ralston pressed Romney on his endorsement by Donald Trump, and asked if the former Massachusetts governor was offended by the real estate mogul's persistent questions about the validity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate. "The way Donald Trump will address an issue and the way I address an issue will often times be different," he said. "That doesn't mean I'm going to reject the endorsement of people of significance of this country who share values, who share beliefs on a whole host of issues. If we can agree 80 percent of the time we're on the same team."

He is not concerned about the poor because they have safety nets.  Those same safety nets that Republicans oppose?  He contradicts himself every time he speaks.  Does he remember endorsing the Ryan plan, which would cut millions from programs that help the poor?  Is he even remotely aware of what it is included in the Ryan plan?  Probably not, or he wouldn't have said he wasn't  Read More...

Sorry if I'm not buying into the new candy coated version Mitt is trying to sell....If he has to back pedal on the bulk of his comments, which in fact are his true feelings, then maybe he should just shut up and go home. Mitt governed the same way his father did, creating more fees, higher taxes and a bigger government, all on the backs of the seniors and the poor.

People often "leak" their true feelings. Romney's leaks are especially revealing.

He's all about the money -- money for people who already have it. His one true mission.

He misspoke more then once about the same thing. Either way he is scary because he must have some other problem if he doesn't mean to say something and repeats it.

I am completely bewildered that people can listen to a man brazenly and openly LIE as Mitt Romney has and still consider him for the office of the Presidency...why can't or won't Primary voters see that this man is very dishonest and someone who will seemingly say anything in order to gain power...I haven't heard one qualification he has that would make him suitable for this office.

I cannot allow myself to believe that Mr. Romney could actually win the election, not because of what it would say about him but what it would say about the American voter. I'm not ready to give in to cynicism just yet and to have my heart broken.

Oh my!

His entire campaign has been nothing but an accidental misspoken banter. If you think you can insult Americans and just say opps I didn't mean that well... then you get to see come November :) Every word that comes out of this guys mouth relates to the fact that he is out of touch with 99% of America. Romney is anything but a Patriot. If he is nominated I can only imagine the gag reflex from the Tea Party lol !!

By "mis-speaking" he means he uttered his supercillious comments in public rather than in private where he undoubtedly has all kinds of opinions on the matter of "the very poor."

"Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed."

-- Herman Melville

Do we really want a POTUS who incessantly "misspeaks", and constantly has to backtrack & "clarify" his remarks ? When would he have time to govern ????

Romney now seems to understand that the "Poor" might not have the kind of wealth that he caters to but what they do have is the VOTE!

Since we live in a global community and the US is not an island, Mitt's continued mis-speaking scares me to think how this guy would handle himself in an international summit

That's not what he said with Soledad O'Brien just the other day. And the first thing he plans to do is lower the tax rates on the rich or "job creators" though taxes are lower now than when the economy was booming. When the first thing you do is make sure your and those like you get a lower tax rates then you're for yourself and the rich.
