Obesity Study In Mice Suggests Condition May Be Infectious

We've heard obesity can be "spread" between friends when we copy each other's eating habits, but a new study in mice suggests obesity could actually be infectious.

That's right, infectious. As in, something you can catch.

In the study, mice engineered to have a particular immune deficiency developed fatty liver disease and got fatter when fed a Western-style diet. But strikingly, when these immune-deficient mice were put in the same cage as healthy mice, the healthy mice started to come down with symptoms of liver disease, and also got fatter.

The culprit? Microbes in the stomachs of the mice. Because the mice had their immune systems disturbed, the bacteria in their guts got "out of wack," said study researcher Richard Flavell, a professor of immunobiology at Yale School of Medicine. We normally live in symbiosis with the bacteria in our guts, but in the study, the number of "bad," disease-associated bacteria increased 1,000-fold in mice with immune problems, Flavell said.

And it's these bad bacteria that were transmitted from mouse to mouse, causing the healthy mice to also experience changes in their gut microbes -- and making them fat.

"We could make a mouse fatter just by putting it in the same cage as the other mouse," Flavell said.

The crucial question is: Could this happen in people?

It's possible, but we'll need much more research to find out, Flavell said. The contagiousness of obesity  seen in this study is probably more likely in mice than in people because mice eat each other's poop, a very efficient way to transmit gut bacteria (add this to your list of reasons not to eat poop).

At minimum, the study suggests "this should be very seriously looked at in people," Flavell said. Fatty liver disease is very common among obese people, affecting 75 percent to 100 percent of the obese population, the researchers say. In about 20 percent of these individuals, the disease progresses and becomes severe.

Previously, if two family members living in the same household both developed liver disease or became obese, people would have blamed genetics. But the new study suggests the environment may play a role as well.

If the findings apply to people, they would suggest we need to take approaches to obesity and fatty liver disease that address gut microorganisms — perhaps antibiotics or probiotics — in addition to traditional treatments, Flavell said.

"This is a very thought-provoking study that underlines the role of the bugs that we all carry inside us in determining our susceptibility to liver disease and its complications," said Dr. Jasmohan Bajaj, an associate  professor of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Virginia Commonwealth University,  who was not involved in the study.  More work is needed in humans, who are much more complex than mice, to understand the role of gut bacteria in liver disease, but "these experiments form a key step forward," Bajaj said.

The study was published online Feb. 1 in the journal Nature.

Pass it on: Alterations in gut microbes may increase the susceptibility to obesity and fatty liver disease and also make it possible to spread these diseases, at least in mice.

It makes sense. There are many things which are likely caused by infectious processes if evolutionary biology is important.

Having just watched the film "The Help" this really struck my funny bone!

One thing that can cause problems with digestion and trigger sugar cravings is candida which is VERY common. Chances are if 2 people eat most of their meals together, they eat foods that feed candida such as processed foods: lots of white flour (#1 on the glycemic index), sugary soft drinks etc. (There are 11 TBS of sugar in every 12 oz of Coke.) These things feed candida and since they have no nutritional value, they convert to fat which the body stores.

How your food gets broken down and absorbed is largely a function of your biome, the bacteria that live in and on you. There is a lot of research being done on this. This is another good reason why taking antibiotics for every ache and pain probably does more harm to us than good.

To all the cruel thoughtless people who think that obesity is merely a problem of will power, I would like to wish to them some powerful learning experiences that will be painful enough for them to understand the complexity of the issue. Then maybe they will learn to be more supportive of their fellow human beings.

Have a nice dy.

Have a nice day.

Oh, my gosh. I'm paying $420 extra a year for insurance because I have bad gut bacteria that gave me a high BMI?!? Whoa. Find a cure! But then what will they charge EXTRA for to get the money to pay for a FREE yearly health exam? If a cure for this comes before 2014 (and we are all skinny~!) who will pay for Obama's Health Care Plan that starts in 2014 where we MUST ALL get free Health Exams? During the exams they take blood to examine (and experiment with?). Then they make up rules on what to charge EXTRA for in finding flaws in us. Such as for now they charge EXTRA to those who have: a high BMI, high cholesterol count, high blood pressure, or smoke or are a diabetic!!! Maybe we can be charged for not having a perfect facial measurement? Ugly must go! Computer chips in our bodies will help, also, in the government perfecting the perfect human!

Corgi, Not sure you are aware of the fact, health insurance have been dictating the rules for decades, even back when President Obama was in College.

If you want to ask questions concerning health care insurance health cost protocols, ask the source.......

The health care-less insurance industry

More appropriately termed

Disease Management Systems For Profit

Unless of course you just have a thing for conservative , poorly created political jingles that say nothing, as in the phrase , Obama Care.

What a ridiculous misrepresentation of the results.

A condition that causes the mice to gain weight is caused by microbes which can be transmitted to other mice.

The weight gain is a symptom, not the original condition.

How dumb.

Oh good that means the world at least in the UK and America and yes France too! us obese folks will run this country, so now I can remain 300 pounds since everyone will relate and soon models will be size 12 women since that will be the smallest.

Great another excuse people can list as to why they are fat. Eat correctly, exercise and you won't be overweight and I don't care what bacteria is in your stomach.
01:38 PM on 02/05/2012
I have a few questions about this. 1 We always hear about normal gut bacteria, but it is never named. 2 Bacteria can easily be cultured, what were the abnormal bacteria?
01:38 PM on 02/05/2012
It has been my observation that most obese people are offspring of obese parents, obvious, I know but I really think that the children become fat because they are over fed by parents who can't believe that a small amount of food is sufficient even for a small child. They impose their own appetites on their kids who happily eat any junk they are given and then can't stop when they get older.
02:59 PM on 02/05/2012
Then explain how a fat child, who eats very little, and have done so their entire life, has become fat?

I barely eat, I've been this way my whole life, and I'm fat... so please, explain how this works?

I think in case of parents, it's genetic. I'm working on losing the weight, cause I can't take this stigma anymore... and I need to for my health...

What do you mean by "micro"?!
03:48 PM on 02/05/2012
very "little" is a relative term, also depends on what you eat, your metabolism and activity level.
At the end of the day it's relative to the amount/type of food you consume. It's as simple as that.

Proof? There are third world countries short on food supplies, who certainly have a cross section of various body types/conditions/metabolisms, yet it would be quite difficult to find "overweight" people.

Don't have to resort to extremes, by starving, but you do have to reduce your food intake and or increase your activity level. "Fat" cannot be produced without food intake.

I had the same problem! I finally found I was gluten intolerant so I went off bread and wheat products and also just for the heck of it, heavy carbs like potatoes and sugar.
Dang I started to lose weight. I'm no longer obese (BMI) and at 54 my last blood pressure reading was 106/76! No bread, wheat products which includes beer, pasta, potatoes, sugar. Instead I have corn, rice bread, corn pasta, corn tortillas I make them fresh and lots of lean protein, fruit, vegies, yogurt and honey no other sugar sub. It has to do with insulin and the glycemic index. No more bloating and digestive problems and I am SLIM!!! I watch my intake of whole eggs and use the scramblers with a lean small slice of ham. I treat myself on the weekends but I don't binge.
And of course in the gym for my workouts regularly which before I went off heavy carbs even that didn't help. I have fat genetics so I am so happy about this. Finally!!

I've known a lot obese people to come from very thin parents and their kids to be thin too, so explain that.
07:47 AM on 02/06/2012
I'm sorry, I should have not said 'all obese people' oh wait, I didn't. I'm commenting on my own personal experience being raised by overweight people who never gave up trying to get me to eat more, been fighting weight all my life. And I've also seen it first hand watching my neice and nephew grow up being given a sandwich before meals are ready because 'well, they're hungry' and then being forced to eat the dinner that was prepared for them.
