Search On For Missing Cruise Passenger Near Mexico

Missing Mexico Cruiser

02/ 3/12 12:21 PM ET  AP

MIAMI -- A search is under way in waters near Mexico for a British cruise ship passenger who apparently went overboard.

The Royal Caribbean International cruise line said Friday that another passenger saw the 30-year-old man go over the railing from his stateroom on the Allure of the Seas. That was backed up by footage from an onboard video camera.

The man's name was not immediately released.

The man went overboard as the ship was sailing to Cozumel, Mexico. The Mexican Navy and Coast Guard are assisting in the search.

The Allure of the Seas departed Sunday on a seven-night cruise from Fort Lauderdale.

You might as well be on a 20 story building looking over the railing. Not for me. Besides, all that food makes you fat.

There is NO WAY to fall overboard on a cruise ship unless YOU, yourself, are negligent. He must have been partying and walking on the railing.

The Allure was chartered by Atlantis Events - a gay travel company. Last year this same ship had drug overdose deaths and someone got busted for dealing drugs from his cabin. It made national news. This year the same ship and charter has a man go overboard. Bad press for both companies. It could have been drugs, booze, depression, foul play. Anything. Whatever the cause, a life was lost and I'm sure he guy left behind family and friends that cared for him.

Of all the cruises I've taken, ONCE someone smelled "pot" in the air. The staff members of that cruise ship IMMEDIATELY went to that cabin and at the next port, threw them right off the ship. No questions asked. Just GONE.

What does smoking 'pot' have to do with this ?

I have never been on a cruise myself, but hope to in the near future. I know at least 10 people who love it and the word I get from them is that it is very safe. They have also told me that you would have to climb up on or be pushed in order to go over the side. Where I live we have had numerous incidents with spring breakers climbing on balconies and falling to their deaths, because they were drinking. Families have sued, when it was their loved ones stupidity that caused their death. They can't assign someone to watch over everyone on a cruise to make sure they stay safe. And they surely can't stop on a dime to pick you up. Although it wouldn't make a difference if they could. Like others have said here the suction will pull you under. It doesn't matter either whether the cruises are cheaper or more expensive. I have known people who could take the most expensive cruise of all and after taking it decided to stay with the cheaper cruises. Said they were just as good if not better.

Falling off balconies? I'm guessing you're from the Daytona Beach area.
Anyways, have fun on the cruise. They're Great! My recommendation would be to go South East rather than South West.

No not Daytona. Panhandle area. Thanks for the tip on the cruise. We are flying to Belize this summer. The cruise will probably be over the Xmas holidays or next summer.

Every person's death is a matter for concern, but people die or commit suicide every day. When bad things happen on a cruise ship, they sometimes make the headlines, but with a few thousand people on board, deaths are going to happen.

I have never been on a ship where someone jumped overboard, but once we had to make an unscheduled stop for a passenger who needed more medical care than could be provided on board, and another time someone died from an apparent heart attack.

That's one heck of a dive, suicide maybe, but they have a camera showing him going over. Or insurance fraud... not much information, hope HP finds more about this.

Some of the comments on here are stupid, millions of people take cruises each year. You don't just happen to fall off, you either jump or are pushed off. It is likely he had a companion with him..all bookings are double occupancy per berth. Maybe we will get the rest of the story?

Maybe he wants his heirs to get $1 million dollars settlement from the cruise company. Look for a 'black' getaway boat that picked him up.

There have been a handful of accidents on cruise ships and people get in a panic. Do they ever consider how many car accidents happen each Day?
12:46 AM on 02/04/2012
I have never once gotten food poisoning from eating in my car. :)
10:18 AM on 02/05/2012
And I've never fallen off my car
12:06 AM on 02/04/2012
I would have thought this true if it were a Carnival cruise, but Royal Caribbean generally has a little more class.
12:30 AM on 02/04/2012
Really! What does class have to do with going overboard? Just because Royal charges more than Carnival, does not mean they have more class, or that their passengers have more class. This happens on all cruise lines, you should google it.
10:19 AM on 02/05/2012
God, do you people have any better advice than google, google, google? Seriously, why would any of us want to google what goes on on cruise lines?
12:49 AM on 02/04/2012
More class, yep, they toss a lei in with you when they push you over the side. (As opposed to some cruise lines that provide lays while you're still aboard) :)

Cruising is getting to scary anymore. There are NO laws out there in the wild blue, you just never know.

What are you talking about? There are laws, try educating yourself sometime before posting.

People take their own lives everyday, this just so happened to be on a cruise ship. I guess if someone takes their own life in their car tomorrow you won't own or ride in a car anymore either.

First off I am very educated, the person that is not educated is the person that makes a negative comment to another person in order to get his or her point across...

It's not just this article, it's about the numerous incidents that have been happening on cruise ships through out the years, I guess I should have stated that for you though???

I've been on six cruises and I am over 6' 3". I would have to climb up over the side to get into the water. Sorry to say, I think this person either jumped or was forced overboard.

With that kind of departure, the guy could have been considered for a captains position on an Itaalian Cruise liner.

I too have been on cruise ships. Like John said, you cannot just fall into the water. I think this would be a bad way to die.
12:58 AM on 02/04/2012
Especially in certain waters. There were a lot of sharks in the Rosie Roads channels as well as in Gitmo. Wouldn't have wanted to fall overbard in either.
