Susan G. Komen Reverses Planned Parenthood Decision, Does Not Promise To Renew Grants

Following a massive public backlash over its decision to pull funding for breast cancer screenings from Planned Parenthood, Susan G. Komen for the Cure founder Nancy Brinker apologized to the family planning organization on Friday and said Komen will preserve its eligibility for future grants.

Brinker said in a statement that the decision is a result of "distress" at the "presumption" that Komen, the nation's largest breast cancer charity, pulled its funding from Planned Parenthood for political reasons:

We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives.

The events of this week have been deeply unsettling for our supporters, partners and friends and all of us at Susan G. Komen. We have been distressed at the presumption that the changes made to our funding criteria were done for political reasons or to specifically penalize Planned Parenthood. They were not.

Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.

Our only goal for our granting process is to support women and families in the fight against breast cancer. Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.

It is our hope and we believe it is time for everyone involved to pause, slow down and reflect on how grants can most effectively and directly be administered without controversies that hurt the cause of women. We urge everyone who has participated in this conversation across the country over the last few days to help us move past this issue. We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics - anyone's politics.

Starting this afternoon, we will have calls with our network and key supporters to refocus our attention on our mission and get back to doing our work. We ask for the public's understanding and patience as we gather our Komen affiliates from around the country to determine how to move forward in the best interests of the women and people we serve.

We extend our deepest thanks for the outpouring of support we have received from so many in the past few days and we sincerely hope that these changes will be welcomed by those who have expressed their concern.

To be clear, Komen's apology is not a promise to renew Planned Parenthood grants. It's a promise to "continue to fund existing grants" to the organization -- which it was already planning on doing -- and to make it eligible for future grants. At no point in the press release does Brinker promise that Komen will renew grants to Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood has raised nearly one million dollars in the past several days -- including a $250,000 donation from New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg -- due to an outpouring of public support. The amount would have been more than enough to make up for the $600,000 Komen donates to Planned Parenthood each year. All of that funding goes toward breast cancer care, screenings and referrals.

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, responded to Komen's apology in a statement on Friday:

The outpouring of support for women in need of lifesaving breast cancer screening this week has been astonishing and is a testament to our nation's compassion and sincerity.

During the last week, millions spontaneously joined a national conversation about lifesaving breast cancer prevention care and reinforced shared values about access to health care for all. This compassionate outcry in support of those most in need rose above political, ideological, and cultural divides, and will surely be recognized as one of our nation's better moments during a contentious political time. Planned Parenthood thanks each and every person who has contributed to elevating the importance of breast cancer prevention for so many women in need.

In recent weeks, the treasured relationship between the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and Planned Parenthood has been challenged, and we are now heartened that we can continue to work in partnership toward our shared commitment to breast health for the most underserved women. We are enormously grateful that the Komen Foundation has clarified its grantmaking criteria, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Komen partners, leaders and volunteers. What these past few days have demonstrated is the deep resolve all Americans share in the fight against cancer, and we honor those who are at the helm of this battle.

“Planned Parenthood has been a trusted partner with the Komen Foundation in early cancer detection and prevention services. In particular, Planned Parenthood helps the Komen Foundation reach vulnerable populations — low-income women, African-American women, and Latinas — especially in rural areas and underserved communities where Planned Parenthood health centers are their only source of health care. With Komen Foundation grants, over the past five years, Planned Parenthood health centers provided nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams and more than 6,400 mammogram referrals. With the outpouring of support over the past week, even more women in need will receive lifesaving breast cancer care.

UPDATE: Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.) sharply criticized Komen's decision to make Planned Parenthood eligible for new grants on Friday, calling the move "hollow and weak."

"I am deeply disappointed in the sudden reversal by the Komen Foundation of their original pledge to cut ties with Planned
Parenthood - the nation's largest abortion provider," she said. "Their original stance to stop funding pending an important congressional investigation was an act of courage and prudence, making their sudden reversal today appear hollow and weak."

Rep. Ellmers is one of the lawmakers who called for a federal investigation into Planned Parenthood's use of funds after Americans United for Life, an anti-abortion group, released a report on the subject.

Below, see how the people are reacting to the reversal:

Plan Parenthood donated money. So what! How many abortions paid for that donation. Only God knows!

Ahhhhhh Brains...

'How much will a brain cost?'
The doctor quickly responded, '$5,000 for a Democrat's brain; $200 for a Republican's brain.'
The moment turned awkward. Some of the Democrats actually had to 'try' to not smile, avoiding eye contact with the Republicans. A man unable to control his curiosity, finally blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, 'Why is the Democrat's brain so much more than a Republican's brain?'
The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, 'It's just standard pricing procedure.
We have to price the Republicans' brains a lot lower because they're used."

I see on charitynavigator.org that Ms. Brinker pulls in $417000 for being CEO of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. I guess that's because the board doesn't want to lose her to some other organization formed for Ms. Brinker's sister. Cecile Richards makes $340500 as CEO of Planned Parenthood, but you know, there have probably been one or two more death threats over the years against Ms. Richards than against Ms. Brinker. I know I would be worried about the safety of my family if I were so public a face for Planned Parenthood.

It is important to remember that as Americans we are responsible to ensure that fair and just government is provided to everyone (not always the case when GOP officials hide their intent), as well as doing what we can for our fellow man. The mean spirited actions by the "holier than thou" ultra right is a stark contradiction to the very word they portend to believe in. America stands for freedoms, personal, religious, and otherwise. Trying to legislate hate into the law is wrong and we should be fighting against that. Don't let me get started with examples of how wrong this kind of action can be (Jim Crow, Slavery, etc., etc.)

Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms. Probably didn't know that, right? They "can" refer patients to someplace that does, but that doesn't sound like an efficient place to donate money intended to fight breast cancer. PP is basically about ONE thing...

SGK has done huge damage to itself at this point, however, having p.o'd both PP supporters and conservative supporters. The worst thing (for them) was the disclosure of super low percentage of donations going towards actually preventing breast cancer and the huge salaries of their "executives".

You'd probably do more towards preventing breast cancer to give to a "general" cancer charity, of which breast cancer is only 5th on the list in terms of number of people killed (lung, colon, prostrate, and skin cancer all killing more).

This is how you confuse and distort the issue. PP does provide breast exams, however, if a mammogram is necessary then they would have to go to a facility with the ability to provide one. Most doctor's offices do not have the ability to provide you with X-rays, and other similar services, does this make them unworthy of your patronage? Of course not. As for the silly statement to stop donations to organizations that focuses on one aspect of a disease is absurd. The reason why SGK came about in the first place is that the disease was basically ignored by "general" charities and research. Focusing on this particular disease helps to give people suffering from this terrible disease hope that a cure will be sooner rather than later. Fact check before posting. Thank you.
11:33 AM on 02/09/2012
One of the main issues is that PP got busted for NOT really being interested in providing basic health care (plants were sent in by SGK) and instead referring them out, even for basic exams....

GREAT response! Wish I had said it myself!

Breast cancer screening does not require Planned Parenthood. There are many alternatives. The original decision was a good one and should not have been changed under pressure. The same dollars would be used in the best way, not the most political way. Shame

Would one be satisfied @ 5% if :
Does 5% make it............ok, if:

*5% for every daily flight resulted in death ?
*5% for every daily hospitalizations resulted in death ?
*5% for every visit to a restaurant resulted in death ?
*5% for every trip to the grocery resulted in death ?
*5% for every time you drink your municipally furnished water resulted in death ?
*5% for every time the police stop & inspect someone it resulted in a beating & death ?

Just 5% ?

Guess it really makes little difference, unless you are in that 5% group. Its fraud & death by no other explanation than convenience & indifference to life
05:13 PM on 02/09/2012
I don't believe the 5% number, but even if you cede that point, donating money to PP always has the effect of freeing other funds to use for abortions.
02:08 PM on 02/08/2012
to those thinking murdering a baby is normal, driven for the sake of convenience & financial reward......

From what I've read, abortions represent less than 5% of Planned Parenthood's activities.

Please correct me if I have the wrong information.

shame vs abortion ? protecting life for those who can not, yet you call it being conservative ? did not think it was a party related issue, or is it ? if you use daily this simpleton approach, why not go ahead & continue your convenience
01:38 AM on 02/08/2012
the Jews in the Nazi's big scheme of things were only a small part of their global mission, but, does that make it ok to pick/choose who you kill at will ? adults should know better & the price every one of you will pay will be ghastly & horrific. have you no shame, killing your own baby

Or worse, killing your babies after they're actually born and actually human beings. Or even somebody else's babies. You know, like how 'conservatives' are so big on capital punishment and eager to send our GIs (every one of which was somebody's baby) to their deaths for evil wars fought for money and power. HAVE YOU NO SHAME, CONSERVATIVES?

Odd, isn't it? Fetus in womb: sacred.
Child inadvertantly killed by drone strike: collateral damage (unless he was a Terrorist - then it's "USA USA USA!")
06:35 PM on 02/09/2012
You have a major flaw in your assessment here. The baby still attached to it's mother in the womb has no ability to prevent it's own death or fight for itself. The one it depends on is his mother, who is his killer.
The murders who have taken another's life has made his own choice. He chose to murder, he chose his own fate. He knows the laws of the land and he chose to ignore it.
The valiant GIs who are fighting for our freedom are doing just that. They are, by their own choice, offering their life for your personal safety. Perhaps you would rather they came home and lived with their family and ignored the fact that our enemies want to see us dead. If that is your opinion, then you shouldn't be too upset when they knock on your door and demand your life. Your GI is saving you from that horror. You should thank them.
So, there is no comparison between the three entities you have mentioned. Just think about this. Your mother was kind enough to you to NOT go to an abortion clinic and take your life. You should thank her. The soldier is doing a horrible job to protect your life. You should thank him. The law is punishing a murderer to keep him from showing up on your doorstep and killing you. You should thank them.

what the mother did to her infant child in eureka ca is no different than the services planned parenhood provides, but the mom in eureka is charged with murder. the results are still the same, its murder. what has the USA's mothers diminished too ?

You really should do some research before casting aspersions on an organization that's almost 100 years old and has been assisting women since long before you were born.
11:47 PM on 02/10/2012
aspersions ? one would have to assume with such a statement most likely you have a financial incentive. nazi's assisted scores while they eliminated multiples, so the real question, what's the difference in pp & nazi's ? nothing, they are providing the same "service"......killing. you cant say the concern is womens health when funding is going to clinics that can not provide the services(no equipment), so the question remains, what did those funds provide service for ? you sound like another zombie with marching orders. shameful
