US Passport Fees Boosted And Value Of Citizenship Set

Us Sets Passport Fees

By MATTHEW LEE   02/ 2/12 03:42 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON -- U.S. citizenship is priceless to some, worthless to others. But now the State Department has a dollar figure: U.S. citizenship is worth $450.

At least that's what it will cost you to renounce it.

Under new consular fees published Thursday in the Federal Register, the cost of processing a formal renunciation of U.S. citizenship skyrocketed from $0 to $450. The announcement locks in fee hikes that had been proposed in 2010 and instituted on an interim basis.

The State Department doesn't say how or why it calculated the cost. Citizenship is free for most Americans who are accorded the privilege at birth. The department says only that it "has decided that the renunciant should pay this fee at the visit during which he or she swears the oath of renunciation."

It's also getting more expensive if you want to keep your U.S. citizenship and need a passport to prove it. The application fee for a passport is jumping by 27 percent, from $55 to $70 with a 100 percent increase, from $20 to $40, in the passport security surcharge.

In addition to the increase in the application fee, the department will now charge $82 – up from nothing – to add new pages to a U.S. passport. It says the fee is needed to offset the cost of the pages, the time spent affixing the pages into the passport book, endorsing the passport and performing a quality-control check.

And, registering the overseas birth of an American child is going up as well. It will now cost $100 to apply for a report of a birth abroad, up from $65.

The cost of getting a document notarized at a U.S. embassy abroad is also going up. The new price is $50 for a single page, up from $30, according to the new fee schedule.

The $82 passport extension page thing has been around over a year. I've had 2 extensions and then was refused a third at US Embassy in South Africa, even though regulation says one can have 4 extensions. Went to another country in Africa and got third extension with no problem- they said I could have as many extensions as I wanted. Now we pay these passport people tondo their job- ridiculous

$450 is absurd...The U.S. is obviously trying to keep their people within the border.

Funny. How it took me over year in a half to renew my Permanent Residency? It also cost me close to $2,000 Dollars. Ummmm? I been here almost 50 years. same job 18 years. No criminal record of any kind. My last driving ticket was in 1979. same address for 21 years. I work with in the government. I have security clearance. How ever I do not work for the government. They milk me every time. It was always the same excuse from Home Land Security. Your aplication is in process? It took 8 months for a criminal back ground check. It took 4 Hours for my employer to do a criminal back gound check on my files. I get one criminal back ground chech every 24th months!!

More and more Americans are leaving, estimated 3 million last year, and with the class warfare in full force it's not the poor ones leaving either. Which means all of our taxes increase to cover the millionaire and billionaire tax payers escaping.

I left in 2008. The increasing class warfare is one of many reasons. And I'm middle class, nowhere near rich. 100K to 150K per year. Paid a lot of tax. Pay more in Europe where I am now. Taxes aren't a problem for me. Quality of life is what I crave.

Just going to work my last 8 years before retirement in a world more like the US I grew up in 50 years ago. Not like the US of today.

$82 just to affix new pages to a passport? Are these government employees union members or something? Geez!
03:37 PM on 02/06/2012
Federal employees are paid the same, union members or not.

Union membership is not a requirement for any Federal position.

How about charging illegals a fee to have an illegal baby
born in the US and get US citizenship?
Afterall that baby will be getting welfare, food stamps,
housing, electric, telephone, medicaid and free schooling.

Every human being is created in the image of God. There is no such thing as an "illegal" baby. Get your priority straight.

In the US any baby born here is an American citizen. The problem is the illegal parents...

Perhaps the new and added fees will help the USA get out of its multitrillion dollar debt...though charging a hefty fee for being a president, senator, or rep would be a better revenue producer. Taking a 50% cut of pols' war chest would not be a bad idea...

Will trade USA papers and passport..for similar documents from Venezuela, Spain, Cuba, or Nicaragua; others will be considered as well.

FOLKS , ive always said the way to make money... number #1.. double costs of learner permits and driver license.. that will help keep traffic down and might save sum gas. number #2.. increase passports... done that ..check!!!..number #3.. trible the cost of marriage and divorce.. and insist on a grace period before allowing folks to marry... same as you do with gun ownership.!!! this will bring in lots of money and who knows might save sum heartbreak!!

I got married in 1977 in Massachusetts and yes there was a waiting period. I could never figure out why other states didn't do that. But I guess Vegas would loose some of it's luster if they had a waiting period.

Pardon me, but I paid to have extra pages inserted into my passport last May. Why is this being presented as late, timely news?

The US needs to do more than that. Some countries require proof of income and a signed document stating that they are not eligible for any type of monetary assistance from the government before they are allowed citizenship.

RIGHT! amen to that! I remember I could not work in a country in Europe while my husband was there for a time. Because I was not a citizen of that country!!! How would that do here! Ha!!! :(

[ I remember I could not work in a country in Europe while my husband was there for a time. Because I was not a citizen of that country!!! How would that do here!]

If no employers in the US would hire individuals as employees who were not permitted to work in the US, probably equally as well.

The reason that illegal aliens find employment in the US is that some, perhaps, most employers simply choose to overlook the legal status of their employees.

Yes., I do realize there is good paper out in the work force, but when someone is hiring day labor and/or is paying less than market rate, or is paying in cash and not withholding FICA and Medicare, that employer knows damn well they are probably hiring an illegal alien.

In theory, that is essentially a part of the immigrant visa application package.

I wonder what corporation they have contracted these duties to, that now are taxes are not enough to cover adding the pages to the passport? Wondering what percentage of this transaction now goes to some Wall Street investor.
