Windows Phone

SuperSite For Windows:

Windows Phone 8, codenamed Apollo, will be based on the Windows 8 kernel and not on Windows CE as are current versions. This will not impact app compatibility: Microsoft expects to have over 100,000 Windows Phone 7.5-compatible apps available by the time WP8 launches, and they will all work fine on this new OS.

Not disabling wifi when the screen goes to sleep would be a good start.

The concept of a single OS core from a single source from the phone all the way to the server is very interesting.  IT departments will love it.  The that that they can make an app and have it work whether the user is on their phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop will be very attractive.

Its to bad in reality it just doesnt work. The metro ui which maybe fine for smaller screens kills the usabilty of windows for real pc work with mouse and keyboard. Unless Microsoft offers a full opt out of metro ui with a full clasic desktop and start button it will fail badly. It has already been widely proven consumers have no like or desire to use the metro ui by just looking at the horrid sales of the wp7 metro interface.

Yes, Windows 8 will have the full classic desktop with start button available.  It may not be available on the phone version, but what honestly did you expect on a phone screen?  And frankly WP7 is well reviewed by critics and loved by its users.  When Windows 8 takes metro from being 'unusual' to 'familiar' it may change a lot.

Most IT departments have regarded smartphones and tablets as web interfaces and e-mail readers rather than a contribution to the real computing infrastructure.  It they can run the same programs as the users with desktops and laptops it will be more likely that the IT departments will regard them as part of the enterprise computing resources.

Actually, if you ignore the lagging sales (Which is due in part to the horrible job of marketing they've done--though Nokia has promised a huge marketing binge in the coming months)--user satisfaction among the existing population of WP7.5 users is exceptional.

Windows Phone 8 will quickly overtake RIM to be #3. If everything works the way they claim it will, it will end up being the go-to corporate cell phone as well. I'm excited to see how this plays out and as much as I love my Android phone, if it's nice enough, a windows phone may be in my near-ish future. Something I never thought I would say.
