WASHINGTON -- U.S. Park Police officers, some on horseback and others in riot gear, surrounded the Occupy DC camp in McPherson Square with barricades before sunrise Saturday in an enforcement action that led to the search and removal of tents and protester belongings.

By early evening with light rain falling, police had cleared the entirety of McPherson Square of protesters, who gathered in the middle of K Street NW for their daily Occupy DC general assembly.

Though police stressed earlier on Saturday that their action did not an eviction, protesters disputed that contention. "We're being evicted without tear gas!," said Occupy DC activist Melissa Byrne, according to The Washington Post, which observed early Saturday afternoon that "[t]hey are really clearing this place out."

There have been at least eight arrests, according to media reports and protester dispatches from the scene. According to WRC-TV/NBC4, a Park Police officer was hit in the face with a brick. WTOP reports that the person suspected of throwing the brick is in police custody and will be charged with felony assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon.

By 10 a.m., Park Police officers, along with personnel in bright yellow HAZMAT suits, were inspecting tents to see if they were in compliance with the National Park Service's no-camping regulations. Tents that were deemed out of compliance were dismantled and removed from the park, along with Occupy DC activists' belongings.

The encampment, which started as handful of protesters on Oct. 1 and grew to include tents and communal areas covering the majority of the federally-controlled downtown park near the White House, was cordoned off into sections as police officers conducted inspections.

According to livestreaming video from McPherson Square, one Occupy DC activist pleaded with police that "everything" he owned was in his tent.

The National Park Service, which has jurisdiction over the park, has been under pressure by congressional Republicans over how it has handled the Occupy encampment. Members of the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee have criticized the NPS for tolerating camping in the park.

NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis said that the Occupy camps in the nation's capital are protected under the First Amendment, but said his agency would soon enforce no-camping regulations. Warnings on impending enforcement were distributed on Jan. 27 at both the Occupy DC camp at McPherson Square and a separate camp at Freedom Plaza, which started Oct. 6

According to dispatches from reporters in McPherson Square on Saturday morning, police conducted tent inspections three at a time with a legal observer present.

Police will not look in any tents without a legal observer present.

But by mid-morning, activists, according to livestreaming video from inside the park, were complaining that the Park Police had gone against their word and removed tents that Occupy DC protesters believed adhered to the no-camping rules.

Jeffrey Light, a lawyer representing some of the Occupy DC protesters, told the Associated Press that the U.S. Park Police's actions ran counter to a pledge from a government attorney who had said there were no plans to remove tents that were in compliance with the NPS regulations.

"Here they are," Light said, "doing something different than what they said in court."

Occupy DC's "Tent of Dreams," erected by protesters on Monday around the park's statue to Gen. James McPherson, was taken down by Occupy activists before sunrise. Police removed the Guy Fawkes mask on the statue's face.

Around 7:40 a.m., Park Police officers reiterated the National Park Service's regulations about camping in the park and protest activities: their tents can stay but cannot have camping equipment inside, including bedding.

While tensions were initially high early Saturday morning, observers noted that the raid wasn't very confrontational.

Aubrey Whelan
Tons of cops here. Mostly just milling around. This isn't confrontational at all.

Later, however, the scene became more tense as more police officers moved into the square.

According to livestreaming video from the park, around 8:25 a.m., four activists who remained at the base of the McPherson statue were given their third warning to disperse. They were then arrested.

After the protesters were removed from the base of the statue, special National Park Service crews went in to clean the McPherson statue.

By 9:30 a.m., the area surrounding the statue had been cleared of remaining tents and other Occupy activists' belongings.

As the U.S. Park Police enforcement effort unfolded and tents were removed, The Washington Post reported that "[l]ots of dead mice and rats" were discovered beneath wooden pallets.

By the end of Saturday morning, the reality was sinking in for some Occupy activists that the community they had built since last fall was coming apart piece by piece.

As tent removal continued into Saturday afternoon, more police and protesters gathered on the scene. A group of protesters huddled in front of Occupy DC's library to protect it.

By 3 p.m., the southern half of McPherson Square had been mostly cleared out, with bulldozers clearing off the top layer of soil, which were removed by dump trucks.

But the northern part of the square remained in control of protesters into the late afternoon. By early evening, police had kicked out the remaining protesters from the square and out into K Street.

Kicking everyone out of the park now.

Following Saturday evening's general assembly gathering, Occupy DC protesters pledged to return on Sunday.

Actually the park service allows tents for shelter but not sleeping bags or other camping equipment.

Anti-OWS people must be content with:

o U.S. workers' share of national income at an all-time low.

o Corporations after-taxes profits zooming high

o CEOs increasing profits mainly by reducing wages and benefits

o Unfettered offshoring of both blue-collar AND white-collar jobs.

No meaningful reforms are possible as long as the foxes are gorging at the all-you-can-eat chicken buffet.

Continued voting for the two-party duopoly isn't providing any meaningful reforms.

In order of preference, the options for change are:

1. massive peaceful civil disobedience like the civil rights movement
2. second revolution, possibly triggered by shortages of affordable food
3. military coup d'état by officer(s) who recognize the threat from domestic enemies

U.S. workers' share of national income is at an all-time low:

FRED« Nonfarm Business Sector: Labor Share

While corporate profits are increasing:

Mainly because of reduced wages and benefits:

"JPMorgan’s July 11 “Eye on the Market” newsletter put it, “Reductions in wages and benefits explain the majority of the net improvement in [profit] margins… US labor compensation is now at a 50-year low relative to both company sales and US GDP.”

"WASHINGTON — The movement of American factory jobs and white-collar work to other countries is part of a positive transformation that will enrich the U.S. economy over time, even if it causes short-term pain and dislocation, the Bush administration said yesterday.

The embrace of foreign "outsourcing," an accelerating trend that has contributed to U.S. job losses in recent years and has become an issue in the 2004 elections, is contained in the president's annual report to Congress on the U.S. economy.

"Outsourcing is just a new way of doing international trade," said N. Gregory Mankiw, chairman of Bush's Council of Economic Advisors, which prepared the report. "More things are tradable than were tradable in the past. And that's a good thing."

Last year's Economic Report of the President predicted that 1.7 million jobs would be created in 2003. Instead, the nation lost 53,000 jobs. In Bush's three years in office, 2.2 million jobs have disappeared.

Again and again; for those here decrying the lack of OWS effect or it's failure, then why are you here
'wasting your time'. Totally illogical. For those of you off on a commie, marxist, or nazi comparison rant & eave, well those are old saws...need a lot more sharpening...mentally that is.

You folks have said the said things ever since the first pepper-spray incident in NYC way back...but still OWS is on the streets, and it's winter. Wait'll it gets warmer. Nice camping weather.

And lastly; you're here performing tastless, truthless wordage because you are scared; and for some of you, well, the people who sent or pay you are scared.

Ultimately you know this is working. Yup, rave on.

For those posting "get a job"...

http://www.epi.org/publication/job-seekers-ratio-above-4-to-1/
Nearly three years of a job-seekers ratio above 4-to-1

"Today’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the number of job openings decreased by 63,000 in November 2011, to 3.2 million; also, October’s job openings were revised down by 43,000. In November, there were 13.3 million unemployed workers, an improvement from 13.8 million in October (unemployment figures come from the Current Population Survey and can be found here). Therefore the ratio of unemployed workers to job openings was 4.2-to-1 in November, a slight improvement from the revised October ratio of 4.3-to-1..."

"It is difficult to see how Gandhi's methods could be applied in a country where opponents of the regime disappear in the middle of the night and are never heard of again. Without a free press and the right of assembly, it is impossible not merely to appeal to outside opinion, but to bring a mass movement into being, or even to make your intentions known to your adversary." So glad police had legal representation before removing any tents. While they said the tents could stay, they also clearly warned that any tents with sleeping/personal gear in them would be a violation of the laws and these tents would be removed. The occupy movement will try and sue... for things like "being trampled" by a horse when they ran into it or "being hit by a car" when they walk into it, or "police brutatlity" when they resist arrest and throw bottles and rocks.

From research, you can see that Occupy is verbally and financially backing it are: the Arab Extremist, the America Nazis, many Labor Unions. Support has been given verbally by Pelosi and the Democratic Committee but they have later recinded as of about a week ago. The Occupy Movement was inspired by Arab Spring in the middle east that was designed to cause mass panic and gave opportunity to overthrow the current government to all Isamic Extremist take over power. Here is America, Occupy targeted Wall Street first to see if they could get our economy to implode -- pure anarchy beginnings. The move to DC was to focus on K street to continue the political pressure to see if they could cause a collapse by causing a division and creating a case by igniting fears and anger over "class warefare". This Marxist strategy was actually the same one used with the Nazi youth in the beginning of the WWII strategies.

01:42 PM on 02/05/2012
It is not the 1% that is out of control... define the 1%. Anybody who has a job and makes more money than those in the Occupy crowd?

No, it is the Occupiers who are out of control with their anarchy, trying to use the "Freedom of Speech" as a crux to break the law and bring it down. There is not class warefare, except what the Occupier has brought to the table. The 1% versus 99% is a total fabrication. Get over this... the occupiers do not represent anymore than about .001% of the nation and the Nation is getting tired of it.

What the movement should now be engaged in are marches and selected sit-ins, not encampments. I think this Spring you will see a resurgence and redirection of the Occupy Movement, whose message at the moment is getting lost.

What the movement needs to concentrate on now is the maturation of understanding that "there is not free lunch!" Choas does not breed calm. Anarchy does not make peace. It does not change the world... it does change where you sleep at night. Look at the same message that was promoted in the WWII days by the Nazi youth... they too spouted the Marxist ideals of an unbalance classwarfare and worked to bring a divide. The message here in America is false. People are not stuck in the class... they can move up and down depending on how much effort they put into it and how hard they work. Accountability for ones actions and learning from ones mistakes are essential. The housing market is the effect of two bad causes... the cause of corrupt banking decisions and the greed of the loan takers who got over their heads. This country is still a country of dreams. We can still succeed... why not spend your energy on that, instead of trying to tear it down?

Of all the places to protest this makes the most sense. While the corporations have been buying the corruption, it was Washington that sold the corruption.

The lawmakers have been crafting the laws to favor the corporations and for the OWS people to make a plea for them to "pretty please with sugar on top" decist from taking advantage of those laws is naïve.

"U.S. Park Police officers and workers remove the possessions of members of Occupy DC from McPherson Square on Feb. 4, 2011." Photo that goes with this caption is showing workers in hazmat suits which so clearly says: we are afraid that the hygiene was not up to standards. The police officers are standing close by and obviously are breathing all that "contamination" in at leisure. What an ashaming show of power and homo phobia. Shameful, because while these workers are clad in hazmat suits, still nearly half the people in the US (48.2%) live in areas with unhealthful levels of ozone pollution. Deregulation (not only of Wall Street but all over the board) gives industry a carte blanche to go ahead polluting our planet. I would suggest that OWS should wear hazmat gear from now on, just out of protest.
