Syria UN Resolution: Russia, China Veto UN Resolution

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Russia and China joined forces in a double veto on Saturday to knock down a Western-Arab U.N. Security Council resolution backing an Arab League plan for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step aside.

The other 13 council members voted in favor of the resolution, which would have said that the council "fully supports" the Arab League plan aimed at ending 11 months of bloodshed as Syria has sought to crush an anti-Assad uprising.

Mohammed Loulichki, the U.N. ambassador of Morocco, the sole Arab member of the 15-nation council, voiced his "great regret and disappointment" that Moscow and Beijing struck down the resolution.

Dropping the usual diplomatic courtesies, U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said she was "disgusted" by the Russian and Chinese veto, adding that "any further bloodshed that flows will be on their (Russia's and China's) hands."

French Ambassador Gerard Araud told the council, "It is a sad day for this council, a sad day for all Syrians, and a sad day for democracy." He said Moscow and Beijing were now "complicit in the policy of repression" of Damascus.

This is the second time that permanent members Russia and China have exercised a double veto on the Syria issue. In October, they vetoed a European-drafted resolution condemning Syria and threatening it with possible sanctions.

Diplomats said China had been expected to follow Russia's lead and the decision to veto the text came from Moscow. Russia had complained that the draft resolution was an attempt at "regime change" in Syria, Moscow's close ally and a key Russian weapons export destination.

Russia's decision to vote against the resolution came after U.S. and European officials rejected a series of Russian amendments to the draft resolution that Rice said were "unacceptable."

Prior to the vote, several Western diplomats said that if Russia vetoed the resolution, it would be a sign of what they referred to as the "re-Putinization" of Russian foreign policy - referring to expectations that Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will return to the presidency after this year's elections.

The changes proposed by Russia, seen by Reuters, would have introduced language assigning blame to Syria's opposition, as well as the government, for violence in which the United Nations says more than 5,000 people have died.

Western nations reject the idea of equal blame, saying the government is mainly responsible.

Russia had also insisted on dropping a demand that the Syrian government withdraw its security forces from cities, but U.S. and European delegations refuse to include that change.

The world, including the Russians and Chinese, are disgusted by the automatic U.S. veto of all U.N. resolutions for justice in Palestine and against Israel.

For months anti-intervention demonstrations are being hold all over Syria.. Have you seen the thousands who welcomed Russian minister Lavrov today in Damascus? Probably not.. А lot of you only see some armed fundamentalists, foreign fighters armed by the west and think that they are freedom fighters representative for all the 22 million Syrians. Use your brain 99% don't want a intervention to destroy their country, so that Islamists can take over power, just like Libya.

I am happy there are still people around who use their brain as opposed to the feeds from the controlled, dictated news media in the west whose sole purpose is to serve special groups interests.

What Russia and China did may have have been the best but it was not that unreasonable. The thing is to figure out what it will take to force out Assad. He is what is left of the Baathist movement, a form of Arab communism or extreme nationalistic socialism. Like Saddam in Iraq.

Part of the reason that Russia opposes is that they have grounds for their doubts about US and Israeli intentions. But the US has the right approach and the Arab League are the ones most interested in getting rid of Assad.

Of course they veto. They have great records of human rights. They are the champions of freedom'' People come first? Do they? Could be that they are soplieying ARMS?

The US, China and Russia can reach an accomodation.

China and Russia will stop vetoing US led resoltions on Syria.

US will stop vetoing resolutions condeming Israel for assinations, cluster bombings, fire bombings, territorial expansionism, apartheid walls, refusal to abide by UN Resolution 242, by not vetoing Palestinian Statehood and by allowing Iran to have as many nuclear weapons as Israel has nuclear weapons.
09:44 AM on 02/06/2012
Sounds like you feel that every country should be able to have nuclear weapons? I guess that would take care of all the world conflicts. SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!!!! I guess who ever has the most toys wins? Do they?

Between 1967 and 1989 the UN Security Council passed 131 resolutions directly addressing the Arab–Israeli conflict and America stood alone in vetoing other Resolutions. It is now 2012 and I ask, did anything then or since then cause Israel to honor UN Resolution 242 ? The answer is no, because American politicians were reluctant to use their coercive power against Israel, while they are willing to use it against other Middle East states, such as Iran and Syria. So the 44 years of occupation of Jerusalem and Palestine continues. With their veto China & Russia are simply following America's example, as shown by America on Israeli issues. How can America complain?

Arab league can punish the veto with sanction against China and Russia to teach them an equation of trades and what the human rights and dignity is about.

We have no political interests in Syria, nor should we want any. The government of Syria is for Syrians to decide, not any so-called world government. The United States' position on Syria is motivated by two things; oil corporations and the power of the Jewish community to influence American foreign policy. Americans can do without both of these lobbyist groups corrupting both our internal and external policies. All America has to do is leave the Middle East alone and they would leave us alone.

The U.S has vetoed 100% of UN resolutions against Israel. This is shameless.
06:21 PM on 02/05/2012
There are a couple of positive aspects about this Russian veto. Firstly, it makes the Americans know how the whole world feels whenever the Americans veto UN resolutions against Israeli brutalities against the Palestinians. Secondly, it is a brief setback in the newly discovered method of changing regimes by arming and funding violent protestors. Good thing, the Russians have not taken to this method yet by arming the Greek protestors and North American Occupy activists.

Of course the palestinians had choices of a united government and state. Just like Isreal. Two sides to the same story. Poor us would not work. It has never work!!
