Eli Manning Super Bowl MVP: Giants QB Wins 2nd Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award

HOWARD FENDRICH   02/ 5/12 11:55 PM ET  AP

INDIANAPOLIS — Eli Manning is elite, for sure. A king of comebacks, too. And far, far more than Peyton's little brother now.

Spot-on from beginning to end Sunday night, Eli Manning won his second NFL championship in a four-year span – and second Super Bowl MVP award – for coolly, calmly steering the New York Giants to a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots with a last-minute touchdown drive.

"We've had a bunch of them this year. We've had some fourth-quarter comebacks," said Manning, 30 for 40 for 296 yards, with one touchdown pass and zero interceptions. "We'd been in those situations, and we knew that we had no more time left. We had to go down and score, and guys stepped up and made great plays."

Led, as usual, by Manning himself.

He opened the game by becoming the first quarterback to complete his first nine attempts in a Super Bowl. And he finished the job by directing the nine-play, 88-yard TD drive that put New York ahead with 57 seconds left.

"That was quite a drive that he was able to put together," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "He deserves all the credit in the world, because he really has put his team on his shoulders all year."

This late drive, so reminiscent of the way New York beat New England in the 2008 Super Bowl with Manning as MVP, started on the Giants' 12, with a little more than 3 1/2 minutes left and the Patriots ahead 17-15. It closed with running back Ahmad Bradshaw easing into the end zone from 6 yards out. The Patriots decided not to contest the run, trying to save some time on the clock for a final drive – a risky and desperate decision by Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

But New England couldn't get the ball back in the end zone, with Tom Brady's final heave from his 49 falling barely beyond the grasp of tight end Rob Gronkowski.

"We had this goal to finish, finish, finish," Coughlin said, "and win the fourth quarter."

That's precisely when Manning takes over.

In the regular season, he threw an NFL-record 15 TD passes in the final period.

He also led six game-winning drives to bring New York back from fourth-quarter deficits.

"He's become confident over time; kind of grew into it," Manning's father, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie, told The Associated Press after Sunday's game. "I always felt like you have to experience those situations before you become confident. He's certainly had his share."

That's true. Manning's even done it before in the Super Bowl.

Four years ago, he took home his first MVP award after a scoring pass to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds left allowed New York to upset Brady and New England, ruining the Patriots' bid for a perfect season. Back then, Manning got a boost from David Tyree's Velcro-helmet grab on the go-ahead drive. This time, the key play was Mario Manningham's 38-yard, over-the-shoulder catch between two defenders along the sideline, which held up after the Patriots challenged it.

The Giants had trouble putting up points Sunday despite getting into New England's territory on every drive except a kneeldown at the end of the first half.

But Manning kept at it, using eight receivers, led by Hakeem Nicks' 10 catches for 109 yards.

"We just tried to be patient," said Manningham, who finished with five receptions for 73 yards. "Got to be patient with this game. We knew big plays (were) going to come. We just had to take advantage of them."

Manning now is one of only five players in NFL history with multiple Super Bowl MVP awards. He joined the guy he got the better of in the big game yet again, Brady, along with Terry Bradshaw, Bart Starr and Joe Montana (the only player with three). And Manning did it in the House that Peyton Built, the stadium where his Big Bro – a four-time regular-season MVP but owner of only one Super Bowl title – plays for the Indianapolis Colts.

"It just feels good to win a Super Bowl. Doesn't matter where you are," said Manning, 10 for 14 for 118 yards in Sunday's fourth quarter.

As he spoke, he clutched the silver Vince Lombardi Trophy.

"Certainly, Eli has had a very good season," acknowledged Brady, 27 of 41 for 276 yards, with two TDs and one interception. He completed 16 consecutive passes in one stretch, breaking Joe Montana's Super Bowl record of 13. "He made some great throws there in the fourth quarter."

The biggest turnaround of all this season for Manning was the way he brought the Giants back from a 1-5 slump that left them 7-7 and in serious danger of missing the playoffs. But from there, he took them on a season-closing, six-game winning streak.

He finished the postseason with nine TDs and only one interception, solid as could be the whole way.

"I never doubt Eli," Giants safety Kenny Phillips said. "I don't think anyone on this team doubts Eli."

There were, however, some doubters outside the organization, those who wondered aloud what Manning was thinking back in August, before the season got going, when he was honest when asked in an interview whether he considered himself an "elite" quarterback a la Brady.

Manning said simply that he belonged "in that class." But it all became quite a big deal in New York – shocking, right? – and he was questioned and criticized for the way he seemed to be portraying himself.

Hard to imagine anyone arguing now.

He was sick. My vote would be Pierre-Paul though. So many clutch plays that he pulled off.

"He joined the guy he got the better of in the big game yet again, Brady, along with Terry Bradshaw, Bart Starr and Joe Montana (the only player with three)"

Montana had four (4), as did Bradshaw. Troy Aikman has three (3). Need a fact checker or a new reporter.

Reality check - "Manning now is one of only five players in NFL history with multiple Super Bowl MVP awards."

The writer is not talking about Super Bowl wins, he is talking about Super Bowl MVP awards. Montana has three.

I'm not really a Giants or a Pats fan. But I'm glad Eli won the SuperBowl, primarily because I think it will re-ignite a competitive fire with his brother who will hopefully use this as motivation to fight his way back to health and win another one himself (but who knows for what team).

Congrats to the NY Giants for their Super Bowl win last night. I'm not a fan of either team, but both are god teams that deserve recognition.
Now, I do not believe in all the hype about Eli Manning being an elite quarterback. He is a very good quarterback, as well a a very tough quarterback. I believe he had a really good team behind him and his receivers make him look even better than he is.
Give the whole team the credit, not Eli as the elite quarterback that won the game...
03:26 PM on 02/06/2012
Like I said before, if Drew Breese or Aaron Rogers or some other hollywood movie actor looking type QB with a cannon arm won his first two Superbowls with fourth quarter comebacks on his team's last possession of the game, they would be deemed not just elite, but the best in history etc etc etc ad nauseam ad nauseam ad nauseam. The whole Giants team gets credit, especially the Defense. But I guess Eli Manning is still chopped liver after beating Green Bay at home, the 49ers at home and hollywood QB Brady and his genius head coach in yet another Superbowl. We will take Eli Manning over any NFL quarterback, right now and over the course of his career.

I guess some people, most maybe, like their quarterbacks 'pretty'. I will take Eli any day.

If Brady had won this guy would be saying "He did it all on his own." Arrogance attracts arrogance.

Eli the Elite. You simply cannot deny a quarterback with two Super Bowl wins within two years elite status. It defies logic.

The best part is, I doubt if Eli himself cares about this argument. He was the one in the center of a crush of photographers at the end...that is all that matters. Fanned.

The main reason I don't like Eli Manning is when he throws the ball poorly he always acts as though it is the receivers fault.

Mario should have the MVP for that insane catch.

surprised at how many negative comments about football there is here. You know with so much division in the country, and all the struggles people are going through. it IS ok to put that aside for a bit and just enjoy a game, not thinking about whether the guy next to you is a liberal or conservative, or issues around us.

Thank you for that I was going to write essentially the same thing but you said it perfectly.

Eli might not be a pretty, statistics QB like his brother...but he is a raw leader on the field. And, what it counts, he does put up the numbers.

Contrats to the Big Blue. While I was rooting against you, you proved that you could do what it takes to win a game in the end and the Patriots proved they could do what they needed to to lose it. It was a tough loss, but I am glad that MOST of the country is happy at the Patriots demise. It shows how they are respected and hated around the league. Much like the Cowboys of the 70s/80s. NY, We shall return. I hope the Pats meet you again. But until then, Congratulations to all the Fans of the New York Football Giants and to anyone that was rooting against the Patriots. We were out played and out coached. See you all next year.

Well said.

I expect most of the country doesn't care one way or another, apart from the fact that there are numerically more humans in the New York metropolitan area. It was a good game, and the margin of victory was in a handful of plays.

You will have to talk to the folks in Pittsburg, buffalo, Miami, San Diego, etc. about if they like the Patriots or not. If I were them, I would likely not like them either as the Patriots have been ruining many of their dreams for many years now. This year, we got our dream ruined yet again. But that is the beauty of the game. Next year... I hope they find an outside receiver and defensive secondary. If they do.. we should be just fine.

All the Super Bowl's where the Pats got the breaks and calls are over. The Pats were never good enough to dominate any good team. The Pats play a weak regular season schedule every year. Put them in a tough division they won't make the playoffs. As usual the espn commentators will blame everyone but Brady for another bitter loss.

You are cute. No, like the year they beat every team in the league or their streak of winning the most games ever or the year they repeated the superbowl with the hardest schedule in the NFL. No.. they could never dominate anything. Ha. It is too bad ESPN has already blamed Brady for a bit of it and much of the fans as well. Maybe there is something you said there that had some factual context.. Put them in a tough division.. Yes, There you go. mind you, for many years the dolphins and the Jets were two of the top teams in the AFC... but ok. Congrats to the G men. Nice job. It was close,.. but they made more plays. Great work.

Nice try mike. Weakest division in the Afc. Only beat 1 team with a winning record. they can't live off their past glory. Dolphins have not been good since marino retired after the 1999 season, the Jets had 3 decent seasons.

Are you serious? Your comment makes no sense. NE has gone to 5 of the past 11 Super Bowls. The Patriots are the franchise that most NFL teams want to emulate. Players from other teams that go to NE to play (Ochocinco, Randy Moss, Rodney Harrison, Junior Seau, Shawn Ellis, David Patten, Correy Dillon, Wes Welker, etc, etc) rave about Belichick, their owner Robert Kraft, the Patriot coaches, staff and facilities. As far as the schedule, they are computer generated based on a formula of past records and order of finish. Haters can hate them but don't make up stuff. BTW, I'm a long time 49er fan not a Patriot fan but I respect that franchise.
