Rick Santorum Opines On Susan G. Komen Foundation's Planned Parenthood Decision

The Huffington Post First Posted: 02/05/2012 11:08 am Updated: 02/05/2012 4:18 pm

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum sounded off on the Susan G. Komen for the Cure decision to cut off funds to Planned Parenthood for breast exams, which it reversed in part Friday.

"I don't believe breast cancer research is advanced by funding an organization that does abortions where you've seen ties to cancer and abortions," said a hoarse Santorum on "Fox News Sunday." In fact, a 2007 study published by the Archives of Internal Medicine studying 105,716 women found no link between breast cancer and abortions. Abortion services account for about three percent of Planned Parenthood's activities, while cancer screening and prevention accounts for 16 percent.

"So I don't think it's a particularly healthy way of contributing money to further the cause of breast cancer, but that's for private organizations like Susan G. Komen to make that decision," continued Santorum.

The Huffington Post's Laura Bassett noted that Komen apologized, repeated that it would continue to fund existing grants and make Planned Parenthood eligible for future grants. Komen did not, however, promise to renew Planned Parenthood grants.

Santorum also criticized a recent Obama administration rule requiring religiously affiliated employers -- but not churches and other places of worship -- to provide contraception under their health plans without charge.

"This is the problem when government tells you that they can give you things. They can take it away, but even worse they can tell you how you're going to exercise this new right that they've given you consistent with their values instead of the values guaranteed in our Constitution," he said.

The former Pennsylvania senator finished last in Saturday's caucuses in Nevada.

"It's not okay. • On The Definition Of Marriage

"Marriage is what marriage is. Marriage was around before government said what it was. It's like going out and saying, 'That tree is a car.' Well, the tree's not a car. A tree's a tree. Marriage is marriage." "It's like handing up this and saying this glass of water is a glass of beer. Well you can call it a glass of beer, it's not a glass of beer, it's a glass of water. And water is what water is. Marriage is what marriage is." "I can call this napkin a paper towel, but it is a napkin. Why? • On Sex In The Military

"I -- I would say, any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military. And the fact that they're making a point to include it as a provision within the military that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege to -- to -- and removing 'don't ask, don't tell' I think tries to inject social policy into the military. And the military's job is to do one thing, and that is to defend our country." Fox News, 2011

"The battle we're engaged in right now on same-sex marriage, ultimately that is the very foundation of our country, the family, what the family structure is going to look like. Mr. Santorum are you familiar with the word elect. If a person doesn't want an abortion or want any contraceptives, she can "elect" not to have them. Democracy is about free choice. To have an abortion or to use condoms is a choice to be made, not a mandatory obligation. It is time for you to understand another word: reality. If you want to deny women basic choices about their personal health and well being, may I suggest you become an Afghanistan citizen and adopt the wysofthe Taliban. Your position on abortion is untenable and deeply rooted in the belief that women should not have any choice in this matter. Wow, what a solid Christain belief.

The idea that the Planned Parenthood decision was not politically motivated is total hogwash and everyone knows it. Republicans will leave no stone unturned in their quest to control women's bodies. They just can't be happy until they've figure out a way to force every last human being in this country to conform to their own personal standards of morality. I'm sick of it, and I despise them for it.

As a medical professional that there are no links between breast cancer and abortion Santorum's theory comes from Fundyville, USA.

Female reproduction is hazardous from any point of view. Birth control pills are not really good for you, but unplanned pregnancy, apart from a supportive family, is hazardous too. Does abortion cause cancer? Cancer is a mean disease that strikes people whether or not they have had abortions or used contraceptives. But tinkering with the hormone system may encourage cancer. Statistics show that women who have been pregnant before 30 have less reproductive cancer than other women. This has been known for so long that I don't remember what the exact statistics are.
Santorum said he would not work to make contraception illegal, even though he himself doesn't '"believe" in it. He would work against all abortion. That is the difference, and it offers a real choice in choosing candidates--do you want abortion, or not.
01:27 AM on 02/07/2012
That's nonsense, of course. The choice is whether you want abortion to be safe and legal or drive it back underground and into dark alleys with coat hangers.

He also would not want teens to learn about contraception, impose caps on family numbers, and punish women for having children out of wedlock. He would also defund all family planning for the poor. Yeah.....great candidate. NOT!

All this from a man who claims to want "less government." Sounds to me like those and the ones who vote for him want to expand the government. Clearly this man has a problem with women in general and focuses way too much on the female body and how it is to be used. It's obvious he has some serious issues.

While I am not a conspiracy seeker, evangelicals like Santorum have supported EVERY law to limit choice. Starting with saying ”you can buy your own insurance”, they have pushed for point of conception laws, also pharmacist ”conscience” where anyone at a pharmacy can decide its immoral to personally handle ANY medicine they choose associated with reproduction. It is reasonable to expect that people in conservative states like MS, AR, WY, AK will have NO choice soon, while action groups and pastors try to use thrse strategies on OH, PA, NM, NH, then all 50. This is fighting Rand Paul's ”no public access at private locations” all over again. Equal is equal.
