Alabama Immigration Law's Opponents Seek Allies In Business Sector

WASHINGTON -- Opponents of Alabama's contested immigration law are asking local manufacturers of Mercedes-Benz, Honda and Hyundai cars to help them push for a total repeal of the law in the state's Republican-controlled legislature.

"We're not asking the automakers to engage in a high-profile public campaign," Wade Henderson, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said in a Monday conference call. "We're asking them to use their influence; we're asking them to their persuasive voice and their impact on the economy to encourage legislators to do the right thing."

A group of advocacy organizations -- including the NAACP, the National Council of La Raza, the United Auto Workers and the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center -- requested meetings with the Alabama executives of Daimler AG, Honda and Hyundai to discuss the social and financial impact that the law has on Alabama and the image of companies doing business in the state. (Daimler AG manufactures Mercedes-Benz cars.)

So far only Hyundai has responded to the letters, which were mailed Jan. 19. The leaders of the campaign to repeal the law are negotiating when and where a meeting would take place.

There's a reason that opponents of the Alabama immigration law, H.B. 56, are hoping to ally with car manufacturers: Foreign executives from Honda and Mercedes-Benz were arrested last year because of the law.

Those arrests led to calls for Alabama to remain friendly to foreign businesses such as car manufacturers, but not before some mocking from outside the state. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a newspaper in Missouri, wrote an open letter to Mecedes-Benz after one arrest, calling Alabama the "Show us your papers" state. "Here's an idea: You should move your SUV plant to Missouri," the editors wrote.

Opponents of H.B. 56 have been working to block the law, considered the most restrictive immigration law in the nation, since it was passed along party lines last June.

The measure allows workers of government agencies to inquire about the immigration status of anyone they come in contact with -- a practice that has led to some undocumented immigrants to remove their children from school. The law also prohibits Alabama's government from conducting transactions such as license renewals with a person lacking proper documentation.

Eliseo Medina, international secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union, said during the call that he thinks automakers will be responsive to statistics showing the growing importance of the Hispanic consumers as potential buyers of their products. "What about consumer confidence? Medina said. "H.B. 56 is a PR disaster in the Latino community."

"Latinos are not going to be drawn to brands that manufactured in a state steeped once again in racism and discrimination that targets them," he added.

The coalition plans to mail starting on Tuesday another round of letters to 50 foreign companies that have also invested in the state.

Republicans in Alabama have said they are open to modifications of H.B. 56, but that they will not repeal it. Gov. Robert Bentley released a statement in December, saying he and state legislators "will not compromise our ability to make sure that everyone who lives and works in our state does so legally."

Alabama Republicans plan to introduce several amendments to the law when the legislature reconvenes Tuesday.

HB 56 will be repealed or struck down. Do you know why? Because it's wrong. It's racist, degrading, unneccesary, ill-conceived, in violation of the equal protection clause, makes no economic sense, and is a festering sore on Alabama's already tarnished reputation. When I travel abroad and say that I am from Alabama, I hear: Alabama? They don't like black people or immigrants there, right?

Hey Americans - speak with your dollars! Boycott Alabama! No conventions there. No vacations there. Do not spend one cent in Alabama.

Of course, if you actually try to BUILD anything, we will use our environmental laws to tie your project in knots until you pay the requisite bribes to members of the Coastal Commission and your local county council. But, come on over!

The Honda and Mercedes-Benz executives didn't run afoul of Alabama's immigration laws. They were immigrants, legal or otherwise. The Japanese got a traffic ticket because he had left his driver's license at his hotel. The ticket was dismissed when he brought his driver's license to court. The German was detained because he was driving with a driver's license and no identification. He was detained until a coworker brought his driver's license and visa from the motel where they were staying. The German executive would have been detained before Alabama passed it's immigration laws. If you are stopped for a traffic offense and have no driver's license or identification, the police will detain you until you produce identification.

First lie, LE does not ask for "papers" from everyone they come in contact with. For example, if one is stopped for a traffic violation the only so-called "papers one is asked for is their DL. Only if one can't produce one can questions about status in this country arrive.

Racism and discrimination? Against who? Is it racist to question illegals about their status in this country? Why is the Latino community up in arms over this? Aren't most Latinos here legally? As loyal Americans don't they want illegals to be caught regardless of their ethnicity. If not, why not?

Yes, it is illegal to ask someone, which can happen repeatedly to American citizens, because they happen to fit a stereotype. It's complete BS! If I run a red light and get stopped by the police, I would expect a ticket not the riot act. Targeting one group is racist and discriminatory period. Now what is fair is to ensure all employers are mandated to use E-verify. Deal with the root cause of the problem, not the effect.

But there is no targeting a particular group by LE. That is just pro-illegal propaganda. Racism and discrimination don't have anything to do with the enforcement of our immigration laws. Stop the lies!

Since when is it illegal for LE to ask anyone for their DL during a traffic stop? Since when is it illegal if the person doesn't have one that LE can't ask who they are?

To my knowledge every opponent of illegal immigration wants e-verify in place and the employers held accountable. That doesn't mean that illegal aliens should get a pass for their part in this lawbreaking. They are both equally guilty!

NAACP, useless organization that can't even help their own. What business do they have helping Illegals?? The state of Alabama knew there would be a backlash, I support them. NAACP is a joke. I've seen NONE of those organizations step up in return in anything that involved Black people.

NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. That means anyone who is not white. So in essence, they are taking care of their own b/c the law was written to discrimate against "Brown" people and by definition "Brown" is a color.

You haven't seen anything b/c your not really looking. The NAACP has called out the National Tea Party by showing their beliefs and policies are in fact discriminatory.

Uh Excuse me, but the simple name of your treasured organization with "Colored" in its name shows its irrelevance. The only reason the NAACP still has an office open is because it is closely aligned with the Black church; another profitable and useless entity. Always attempting to help others that in NO way would help you.
What turn out of latinos did you see for ANY Black occasion, except a rap concert? Don't you know Mexican illegals move into Black neighborhoods and play friendly until they over populate and move Blacks out. Pay attention, and stop regurgitating MLK's useless mode of power, that even he came to disown in his last days.

I don't care if they live here, buy up our stuff, and pay their taxes! But I don't want them taking any jobs. Why can't Alabama simply verify their right to work and be done with it?!!! This is perfectly legal (is actually federal law) and doesn't violate and rights nor discriminate?!! Stop wasting time and start doing your job already!!!!

Let them buy a car, get insurance, pay tickets, get a tag, buy food, pay for college, buy a house, rent an apartment, vacation, whatever, I don't care!!! That only helps Alabama!!! Trying to make it illegal for them to pass through or retiring here is just stupid!!! ALL WE CARE ABOUT IS JOBS!

The NAACP is a leftist organization - that ignores their mission for The United States of America = "National Association for The Advancement of Colored People" - and is rallying for illegal immigrants - when National Unemployment has skyrocketed to 25% in the Black communities - under

AL has seen their unemployment drop greatly.

That means that Illegals have left and Americans are being hired in their place.

With eVerify in place, there is no incentives for businesses to hire illegals.

In other words, this effort by supporters of Illegals is a big waste of time.

P.S. We have had voter ID for 9 years. We're just very quiet around here.

Not just Alabama, a "papers please" State ~ The USA is a, "papers please" Nation, since November 6, 1986.

U.S.C. 8 § 1357 : US Code - Section 1357: Powers of immigration officers and employees

(a) Powers without warrant
Any officer or employee of the Service authorized under
regulations prescribed by the Attorney General shall have power
without warrant -
(1) to interrogate any alien or person believed to be an alien
as to his right to be or to remain in the United States;
(2) to arrest any alien who in his presence or view is entering
or attempting to enter the United States in violation of any law
or regulation made in pursuance of law regulating the admission,
exclusion, expulsion, or removal of aliens, or to arrest any
alien in the United States, if he has reason to believe that the
alien so arrested is in the United States in violation of any
such law or regulation and is likely to escape before a warrant
can be obtained for his arrest, but the alien arrested shall be
taken without unnecessary delay for examination before an officer
of the Service having authority to examine aliens as to their
right to enter or remain in the United States;
02:35 PM on 02/08/2012
Yes but the Alabama law ridiculously expands that and then forces all persons to abuse that power or you have broken the law. It makes me, you, everyone perform the powers of immigration officers or be arrested even though we will never ever ALL be given direct access to the immigration data.

So here's the situation, according to Alabama's immigration law, a 4 year old girl was hit by a car and is bleeding out in the street, guess what you have to let her die because you cannot "transport" her to the hospital nor can they treat her either since that would "help" or a "business" transaction. The law is insanely broad!!! 1 of the crazy million things that happen daily!

If this is about jobs: Systematic Alien Verification System (SAVE) was created in 1986, it requires all employers to verify all their employees' right to work in the USA, the federal law Alabama legislature never mentions & refuses to obey which brought illegals here in the 1st place. IF ALABAMA WOULD SIMPLY ENFORCE THIS 1 FEDERAL LAW ALREADY ON THE BOOKS BY USING THE FEDERALLY MANDATED SAVE SYSTEM TO VERIFY RIGHT TO WORK IN THE USA THEN EVERY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT WORKING IN THE STATE WOULD INSTANTLY LOSE THEIR JOB!!! so those crap jobs could be filled with legal immigrants from somewhere else. It would be very foolish for these auto makers to take a position on this. They can only lose by doing so.

Many Americans would never buy a Mercedes-Benz, Honda and Hyundai again, and the brands would become symbols of the exploitation of illegal labor.

This will be a net gain, because all the good Germans looking to work at the plant, can travel to US (as part of EU they don't need a Visa and can stay up to 3 months here legally, beyond that, -you guessed right- they would be ILLEGAL) find some good looking US Born Latina get married and start adjusting his papers. Oh NO Wait! That would be bad because they would take a US Citz job!! Are we not supposed to be competitive and the best men takes the job ?? Hey, WE love exploiting immigrants! that's the main point in having people without documents. When you buy Apple, Motorola and just about almost anything made in China, what exactly are you buying ??

No one should be able to adjust their status in this country when they came illegally in the first place. Read my lips, NO ONE. That isn't how our immigration laws work.

Who is this "we" who likes to exploit immigrants? They aren't immigrants anyway, they are illegal aliens. Only the greedy employers are benefiting from illegal labor not "we". We just get to cover their social costs through our taxes and see our wages go down and employment base for Americans disappear.

I have some sense of the Germans and Japanese and Koreans. When their corporate headquarters learns the law has changed, they will distribute a memo to employees reminding them to carry their passport and visa with them when they travel in the United States.
02:49 PM on 02/08/2012
That's beside the point, when you visit other countries you are spending your money in other countries, they don't care if you've got a visa or not, just that you are spending money, plus it's not like your job hunting (but Alabama would have you arrested just for being there) plus you are being Anti-American when you leave, you should only vacation here to help us out... The point is we don't buy American, just what is cheap, so keeping labor down is important, if not the most important factor in keeping the USA economically powerful, yet we refuse to work harder than illegal immigrants for minimum wage, so we lose those jobs or the business leaves the state/country. The other alternative is the factory only hires high dollar educated citizens that do little work, the factory closes, and we import it from China for less that 1/10th of the cost. So you can't win for losing.

We need to see more multi-family homes (saving money), less free benefits (cut spending), less taxes (money goes further), and lower minimum wage (cheaper living & competitive worldwide trade) otherwise China will just sell everything to the world and the USA fail. You have to ask yourself is that what you really want?

Alabama doesn't arrest people for just "being there." If you are stopped while driving in a foreign country, that ask to see your driver's license and passport or visa. If you don't have them, you will be detained until you produce them. In German executive case, he was detained until a coworker brought his driver's license and visa from the motel where they were staying. The Japanese executive had his visa. He just got a traffic ticket for driving without a driver's license. The ticket was dismissed after he went to his motel, got his driver's license, and brought it to the police station.

Siempre: You make a couple of good points but include some errors in reasoning.
1) Other countries DO care about their immigration laws and about foreign nationals having permission to be in their country. That is why; I followed their laws and carried enough ID.
2) You seem to make the assumption that I was vacationing or buying foreign goods. Actually, I travel for business, marketing US made capital equipment into those countries. My goal is to improve our trade deficit.
