CNN's Roland Martin Under Fire From GLAAD For David Beckham Super Bowl Tweets

CNN's Roland Martin is under fire from gay rights groups after tweeting that people should "smack the ish out" of male fans of a steamy Super Bowl commercial starring David Beckham.

Martin, who has been a longtime analyst for CNN, was actively tweeting throughout the Super Bowl. After an H&M commercial featuring Beckham clad only in his underwear aired, Martin tweeted messages making fun of men who may have liked the ad. He wrote that "real bruhs" would not purchase underwear advertised by Beckham, and that people should "smack the ish out" of a male supporter of the ad.

Many of Martin's followers responded to this, harshly criticizing him for the comments. Martin staunchly defended his messages and claimed that he was simply mocking soccer, something he said he routinely does.

Unfortunately for Martin, gay rights group GLAAD picked up the baton. The group tweeted a response to Martin, saying that "advocates of gay bashing have no place at @CNN." The activist group went even further and has now called for CNN to fire Martin.

GLAAD's letter states that "Martin's tweets today advocating violence against gay people weren't an accident -- they are a part of a larger pattern for Martin. Anti-gay violence in America is a serious problem facing millions of Americans. It's no joke. CNN should fire Roland Martin."

GLAAD also took issue with a tweet Martin sent earlier in the day, in which he made fun of a New England Patriot player who arrived wearing a pink jumpsuit. "He needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass," he wrote.

UPDATE: Martin formally responded to the backlash.

Fam, let me address the issue that some in the LGBT community have raised regarding some of my Super Bowl tweets yesterday. I made several cracks about soccer as I do all the time. I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, and I'm sorry folks took it otherwise. It was meant to be a deliberately over the top and sarcastic crack about soccer; I do not advocate violence of any kind against anyone gay, or not. As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, anytime soccer comes up during football season it's another chance for me to take a playful shot at soccer, nothing more.

GLAAD responded to Martin's statement. The organization dismissed Martin's claim that his tweets were intended to make fun of soccer and maintained its call for CNN to fire the political analyst. GLAAD also mentioned how Martin did not address what the organization described as his "history of anti-LGBT rhetoric. " Referring to Martin's tweets, GLAAD's statement read, "Based on this history, this doesn't seem like a playful jab at what Martin considers an inferior sport. It seems like a jab at what Martin considers an inferior community of people."

Below, see the offending tweets, as well as Martin's responses to some of his many critics.

I have no interest in the character of the news media shill. That they take money to deceive the nation on a daily basis is all I need to know about their character. All I am interested in is the lies they tell us, because I have to interact with people who have been gulled by these corporate criminals.

What Roland did is both good and bad. Calling attention to racist thinking by so called normal people, allows progressive people to use this as a tool for healing!

Actually, broadcasted homophobia by a known personality is homophobia no matter what you pretend.

I don't think he is scared of them. Well maybe he is scared they will redecorate his house and say his shoes don't match his outfit?

This is over the top, over reaction and I do support everyone one's equal rights and justice, anywhere and everywhere, including the right to tweet a bad joke at such a great time. It wasn't even insensitive. If Martin is guilty of anything, it is his knuckle head view of soccer. I happen to be a soccer fan and I love the game!

Grow up LGBT. It is vindictiveness to call to have someone lose their job over this crap. If I weren't such a strong supporter of your rights, I'd recommend not a smack for you, but a swift kick in the......I better stop here before you go off the deep end again reading all sorts of things in my comments and call me anti-gay, because you do seem to be stepping in it with this one.

Are you kidding? There is nothing wrong with a "little ribbing" aka poking fun. It was meant as humor, lighten up. Far from being homophobic. In what part of the tweet was there gay bashing? Seems to be an excuse for some groups to raise an issue where there is no issue. Since when is it ok for groups to have that kind of control?

Martin is a bigot! If the ad was done by a black soccer player he would have never made the comment! comment wouldn't have been made. He has issues with good looking white guys!

Yes it is. And you should know it. Nobody appointed you as g-d, nor do you sit at his right hand.

Grow up, get over it.

I also think that the campaign by the LGB community to desensitise people has become so effective that, they have managed to make people who question/frown upon/disagree with their lifesyle to look like bigots!!!This is the real issue.Infact civil rights activism is no longer what we know it to be historically.Instead civil rights activism has now been ideologically flipped over, to mean the Gay and lesbian commuity cuase.I really think there are other bigger/pressing issues in life .Too much attention has been given to the this community already!

This thing is being blown out of proportion.I have read the said tweets and they contain nothing homophobic.I think CNN is becoming a sort of prison for minority media people, the free speech clause ,it seems does not apply to them.It is rather laughable that Sanchez was basically fired for mild remark he made about Jews, and now Roalnd is being suspended for tweets he made in his free time(not on air)Now compare this with all the drivel the hate monger Lou Dobbs espoused for nearly eight years!Just laughable indeed.Cnn is becoming a joke and irrelevant!I think it time to tune out Cnn in favor of msnbc but then they got rid of Kieth Olberman. So what we have left of media journalism.. is a synthetic media...unimaginative, stale and boring where media folks have to be hyper cautious esp if they are minorities not to say things that would be considered offensive..

While I agree CNN is becoming irrelevant, I disagree with your other nonsense.

I support Roland Martin and his comment. That is what a real man thinks at times. Why are gays always downing a real man for his comments. The man was expressing what he was feeling at the time. Think about all the good deeds Roland has done over the years, for people of all races! I am a american Indian we have been on the short end sinces 1492. So suck it up and fight for something more realistic. keith sumner from az.

This whole thing has nothing to do about nothing. This out cry by GLADD could actually hurt their cause in the long run. And alienate their non gay supporters.
