ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A barista abducted from a coffee shack that sits near one of Anchorage's busiest intersections had filed for a restraining order against a man, but had been too scared to show up for the court hearing, her father said Monday.

James Koenig Jr. said his daughter hadn't known the man for very long before she sought the restraining order in November. He said he didn't know if the man was still in Anchorage.

Detectives were releasing scant details about their investigation into the disappearance of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig. A surveillance camera at the turquoise blue coffee stand in mid-town Anchorage showed a man forcing her to leave the shack on foot at about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Police still don't know if the abduction was random or if the man wearing the dark, hooded sweatshirt knew her.

Israel Keyes was charged by federal prosecutors with kidnapping teenaged barista Samantha Koenig in February 2012. Koenig's body was found in a lake north of Anchorage, Alaska by divers in April. His dead body was found in his jail cell on Dec. 2, 2012 in an apparent suicide, according to law enforcement authorities.

"Our experience is usually these people are targeted in this type of situation," Anchorage Police Department spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said.

Detectives were aware of Koenig's attempt to obtain the restraining order, he said.

Robberies at Anchorage's dozens of coffee shacks do occur, Parker said. But he couldn't remember another case where someone was abducted from an espresso stand, where mostly young women work alone preparing coffee beverages.

Koenig said he didn't want his daughter to work at the coffee stand, but she wanted a job. He wanted her to pursue a career in nursing, something she had talked about, he said. She also talked about becoming a veterinarian.

Koenig issued a call Monday for volunteers to go door-to-door with fliers. Twenty-thousand fliers have been handed out so far and more are being printed up daily, he said.

"If you have time and you have compassion, you can help. Just come down to the Common Grounds Espresso ... and grab some fliers," Koenig said.

The fliers feature two photos of the woman and the word "kidnapped" in large, red letters on top. A $41,000 reward is being offered and a Facebook account has been set up at Facebook.com/help.find.samantha.

Michelle Duncan, owner of Common Grounds Espresso, is handling out fliers with each order of coffee.

"Samantha works for us. She's a very lively, bubbly, beautiful 18-year-old woman," Duncan said.

"We just want to keep Samantha's face out there," she said.

".... coffee shack where mostly young women work alone preparing coffee." Who EVER would think THIS was a good idea? This coffee shack should have been impenetrable and built of steel with an alarm attached. How else do you justify a young girl working alone at night? The men in this country are killing women and children at an unbelievable rate and this kind of crazy work situation still exists? Insane.

It's been more than a month now, and she's still missing. The city is papered with the fliers, and there have been fund raising events to pay for the fliers and increase the reward. There have been vigils that have brought people from throughout the community together. If you want to show your support, you can wear a green ribbon -- that's the color her family and friends have chosen for her. Please continue to pray for her and her family.

I question why would Samantha go back to work if she feared for her life. If there was a stranger that was scaring me enough to to get a restraining order I would go stay with a relative out of state for awhile . Letting the police look into the man while she was away. Many of the coffee places have good looking young women wearing revealing clothes. Yes , they have the right to wear whatever they want to. Though I will share that I was attacked and left for dead in 2004 . Looking back you cannot be too careful. There are so many sickos out there.

The man she 'feared' has been cleared of any involvement. That guy has been put through he!!, and he is not a suspect. Anchorage Police Dept has made many statements saying so. They do however; have leads, they are staying mum though, like any police dept would during an open investigation.
My heart goes out to you for what you had to endure in 2004.

1st I pray and hope she is safely returned home. God please watch over her and protect her. Peace to the family and friends. I respect the police work and decisions but just do not understand why the tape is not released. I dont care how poor the quality is, someone might notice something familiar.
I live in PA but my heart is breaking for this young lady. Why is it so hard to follow this case?

If there was someone that she was afraid of enough to go to the trouble to get a restraining order, then the police need to hammer every detail of that person's whereabouts and alibi if any during the time that this young woman went missing. There is no coincidence that she was afraid of this person, she was afraid because she feared his actions. Please ladies, always carry pepper spray, stun guns where legal don't do like my wife actually carry it on your person it may save your life. My wife would have to tell an attacker to wait until she went to the trunk of her car, located her person so that she would have her pepper spray, it does no good unless you have it on your person. Pepper spray is not lethal, no long term harm, but it might give a woman a chance to expcape when someone tries to force her to leave with them. There are a lot of us guys that would fight to the death to protect a woman, but unfortunately attackers always know when and where not to do their dirty work.

Why are the damned men killing off their wives (Michigan), joggers (Montana), girlfriends (Alaska), pregnant wives, mothers of their children? Is no woman safe anymore? Do we need to carry a lady's pistol at all times? Aren't we safe going about our days working, grocery shopping, tending to our children? It is too scary these days.......Why is this?

It is too scary. Evil has infiltrated the world at an alarming rate and people who leave themselves open to it, will be taken over. Men are killing off their wives because in their twisted, sick minds it's a greater alternative to the financial adversity of divorce. But yes, women in general have always been targets, and even more so today.

In the case of this poor woman, I always remember what a crime expert said on Oprah's show one day ..."NEVER go to the second location" if you are being abducted... fight, scream, do anything possible but never go willingly. As far as carrying a pistol, it's not a bad idea. I was thinking about buying a stun-gun to keep in my bag, at least it give you a chance if someone comes up to you. Give them a shock right to the genitals or right in the chest, knock them down.
12:05 AM on 02/18/2012
I saw the same Oprah show. It looks as if Samantha did open the door and leave with him. Not the man shooting his way into the shop. That though would have caused an alert maybe to people in town.

Being a survivor of a choking attack by a stranger I would advise get a stun gun, pepper spray, and even wasp spray that can hit from 20 feet. With all of the porn on the internet who knows what sick fantasies this creepy guy had.

Police. N0.# 1 This is NOT RANDOM. This is Personal. He hid his Identity, from Cameras, etc. Random won't go up in a Business District, & try to abduct someone. They wouldn't be soo bold, plus a gun was used. If she didn't show up, at Court, she probably didn't believe in the System, paper decrees, etc." Get to work, Anchorage. "

So, Nancy, are you from Anchorage ? I am. APD does their job.
12:11 PM on 03/04/2012
Apd may do there job, Does not mean they are good at it. To busy with DUI's and other police related bs. Look at the number of missing person reports that have gone unsolved in and around anchorage. There is an alarming number. from 1993 to 2003 there was alot of unsolved "dissappearances" that detectives have chalked up to mayby they moved outta town or changed there names and never talked to there families again...it happens right. Yeah according to the APD it does. I am researching stats from 93' tp 03 so I dont even want to gues what the missing female stats look like from 03 to current but they are definetly not world beaters when it comes to solving missing persons cases.

And get your story straight. They have not released information yet on what type of weapon was being used. Instead of ranting..........just pray for safe return.

There's been no new information about Samantah, unfortunately. Everyone here is very concerned, and praying for her safe return. Private companies have been offering their services -- fliers are being printed for free, businesses around other coffee stands have been checking on their neighbors more frequently, a helicopter charter company has offered their services if the APD or AFD needs them. (The only law enforcement here is Helo One, from the State Troopers) Please continue to pray for her safe return.

I am a young woman who was born and raised in Alaska. It makes me sick to read all the negative comments about our government, our ways of life, and our "lack" of being able to protect ourselves. The local tv channel in Anchorage released a story today about how plenty of coffee shops in Anchorage provide pepper spray, and the girls know how to use it. And if they weren't before, they are now. Girls in AK are tough and I'm sure Samantha has been giving her abductor hell. If our fathers didn't think we could hand jobs where we worked alone, or in potentially dangerous situations, they wouldn't let us. I cannot believe the lack of respect human beings have for each other. This girl is missing, her family is devestated. The entire state is devestated. I take comfort in the fact that if I was to go missing, my state wouldn't rest till I was home. Focus on the issue here people. Please post her flyer to your FB, Twitter, etc., no matter where you live. Help bring Samantha home.

I have Pepper Spray too. I was stalked. Cyber Bullied, etc... Pepper Spray is not effective if you have no "seconds' to release it." .. when a gun comes on you, out of nowhere, soo suddenly. This abduction is Personal. .. My gut says, it is someone she knew, or this person hired someone to abduct her." I hope the situation"" with Restraining Order.. they all vary) I hope it is not too ominous." They should be checking ALL Boat Travel, Rentals. Camera Footage.. etc.
04:10 PM on 02/08/2012
Are you high ????????
04:59 PM on 02/15/2012
I'd say most of the time they would be to afraid to use there gun on you and/or they are going to kill you at one point or another. even if they have a knife id take a knife wound over being tortured for many days and taken a million miles from home. PLUS they have been checking every camera to almost every place in the city. its also a coffee shop, a place where a bunch of guys could go every day for coffee, they know exactly the time she will be there everyday, its a complete 50/50 on if its someone she knows or not.
