Secondhand Smoke: Too Many Kids Breathe Others' Smoke In Cars, CDC Says

Secondhand Smoke

By LINDSEY TANNER   02/ 6/12 01:49 AM ET  AP

CHICAGO -- Texting while driving, speeding and back-seat hanky-panky aren't all that parents need to worry about when their kids are in cars: Add secondhand smoke to the list.

In the first national estimate of its kind, a report from government researchers says more than 1 in 5 high school students and middle schoolers ride in cars while others are smoking.

This kind of secondhand smoke exposure has been linked with breathing problems and allergy symptoms, and more restrictions are needed to prevent it, the report says.

With widespread crackdowns on smoking in public, private places including homes and cars are where people encounter secondhand smoke these days. Anti-smoking advocates have zeroed in on cars because of research showing they're potentially more dangerous than smoke-filled bars and other less confined areas.

The research, from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was released online Monday in Pediatrics.

The study is based on national surveys done at public and private high schools and middle schools. Students were asked how often they rode in cars while someone was smoking within the past week. The most common answer was one or two days. The smoker could mean other kids or parents; the study didn't specify.

A CDC fact sheet suggests even small amounts of secondhand smoke can be risky.

"There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke," the CDC says.

Overall, 22 percent of teens and pre-teens were exposed to secondhand smoke in cars in 2009, the latest data available. That figure declined gradually during the decade, from 40 percent in 2000, the study found. But still, the numbers of kids still facing the risks "is certainly problematic," said CDC researcher Brian King, the study's lead author.

"The car is the only source of exposure for some of these children, so if you can reduce that exposure, it's definitely advantageous for health," King said.

The CDC advises parents to not allow smoking in their homes and cars, and says opening a car window will not protect kids from cigarette smoke inside.

Measures banning smoking in cars when children are present have been enacted in a handful of states and proposed in several others. The study authors say similar bans should be adopted elsewhere.

Hi. Smoking is so addictive. I smoked for about 40yrs., Worked in nice lounges and a nice bar for about 16yrs. Working, i didn't smoke hardly at all. At home, didn't smoke that much either. I did smoke about a half a pack a day to 1pk. Second hand smoke will do your lungs big time damage. A non smoker around a person that had a cig. ur breathing in 3rd hand smoke. Now i got COPD. More wemem gets it than a man. Men does get it. Take my advice, if u don't smoke, Don't. You have children, give them fresh air. They do not diserve to have breathing problem. Please Quit.

My Dad smoked since Navy boot camp in WWII. When he was 78, I watched my Dad suffocate while his lungs slowly filled with fluid and he struggled to breathe. The look in his eyes is a vision I'll carry with me for the rest of my life and I hate it. Don't you dare tell me about fear, I know fear intimately, I saw it in my Dad's eyes as he died.

Sadly, forcing children to inhale cigarette smoke is part of the rationalization that smokers use to dismiss the scientifically known dangers of tobacco smoke and justifiy their own addiction. How dangerous can tobacco smoke be if society allows it to be forced down the lungs of infants and children?

If there are any parents out there who are smokers and have a child with asthma, please do not smoke around them especially in a car with the windows rolled up. It is so bad for them and the medical bills you will incur from doctors and hospitals can lead you to the brink of bankruptcy. My grandmother adopted my sister when she was a little girl and my grandmother was a smoker. One day my sister asked her to please stop smoking because "who will take care of me if you die?" My grandmother quit cold turkey.

I wrote this in reply to someone's post below, but I think it deserves to be a post in itself:

So what???

We're all going to die anyway, sooner or later. Does it matter whether it's from smoking or a car accident or old age? Dead is dead, and when it's your time, it won't really matter how it happened when you get on the "other side".

Personally, I'd rather enjoy the life I have, including eating what I like and smoking a cigarette when I feel like having one, than spend my one and only life depriving myself of enjoyment in the faint hope that I may buy myself a few extra years. How would I know anyway?

We don't get to know when we are "supposed" to die, and even the scientific definition of an "average" lifespan is just that - an average. There are always going to be exceptions on both ends. Just about the only time you can honestly say someone died "before their time" is if they are murdered or take their own lives, because that's not a question of fate or nature - it's an overt act.

For most of us, we will never know how much time we've been given on this Earth until our last day. In the meantime, we should make the most of the time we have, and not waste it worrying about what's going to get us at the end.
07:38 PM on 02/06/2012
But is it fair for you to damage the health of a child so that you can enjoy a cigarette? A lot of these diseases caused by smoking and second hand smoke can be agonizing for both the one who is going through it and their families. And second hand smoke has also been linked with increased ear infections and other illnesses in children. What right do we have to inflict that on our kids? I used to smoke. But the day my son was born, smoking was never allowed under any circumstances in our home or vehicle. Ever. Our kids deserve better than to have to suffer the consequences of our selfishness.

who cares about you....you should be caring about the chldren...or if you have none, and I hope that is the case, you should not be giving this message to Mothers and Fathers ... have a friend who has gone to hospital twice in just the last few months and put on a ventilator because her father refuses not to smoke in their home and the doctors said he could kill his teenager....but, still he smokes....karma has stepped in...he had heart attack and now he needs heart transplant...yet...but, they find he has been smoking behind the doctors backs so they will not give them a transplant, they want it to go to someone who will treasure the gift. My family member died at a very early age from asthma...his very small children were in the home when he started the attack..and he died right in front of them....no time for anyone to get there...you can bet those children do not smoke, but, who knows if they come up against a thoughtless and inane person such as yourself...GOD HELP THE CHILDREN FROM THESE PEOPLE....GO YOURSELF, BUT, DON'T TAKE THE INNOCENT WITH YOU, unless you are the most selfish person in the world....you are NOT LOGICAL AS YOU SAY...YOU NEED TO ADD ASININE TO YOUR POSTING

It's your emotion-filled post that is not logical. I am sorry for your losses and for the friends who are suffering as you describe.

Try to remember that smoking is an addiction. I don't deny that I am absolutely an addict. I won't even say that I "can't" quit... the truth is, I don't WANT to quit. I never have wanted to - not for a second.

But perhaps you can understand your friend's father better if you consider that his addiction to cigarettes is just as powerful as an addiction to drugs or booze.

I applaud those who truly want to quit and are successful. But when you start judging others, you are doing as much damage to them as the cigarettes you abhor so much.

Be supportive to your friend, and stop looking for someone/something to blame. S**t happens in life - and more often than not, the worst stuff happens to those who deserve it the least. But it's how we respond at those times that matters - not what got us there.

When I was a kid everyone smoked. Gym teachers, our doctors smoked while they examined us, the Deli counter man had a cigarette in his mouth as he weighed the food and so did the butcher and the baker....the teachers lounge at school was a smoked filled den..We grew up with lead based paint, and ate full cream milk and cheese and of course bacon was a staple. We were given meat bones full of fat to chew on....Everyone grew up strong and healthy..Most people walked everywhere and cars were luxuries...However, today there are so many chemicals in the air and food that we eat, the things that we use and tobacco is not a pure leaf but rather a chemical creation. However, I smoked and got heart disease. My best friend just died of lung cancer after smoking all his life. Some of us have genetic predispositionto heart disease and my friend had lung cancer in his family history. Regardless of all this I would tell everyone and anyone not to smoke. Why pay the tobacco companies to kill you. That is asenine. Stop it now. Feel better, look better and smell better and live in a healthier environment for your childen and grandchildren..

More garbage from th anti-tobacco lobby!
1. Since car volumes are relatively small, the residence time will below for any significant amount of ventilation, unless there is continuous smoking.
2. Bars will probably present greater risk, since exposure time would be longer. Children, however, are hardly ever found in bars.
3. Lung cancer and heart disease, the risks most people associate with smoking and ETS, are virtually unknown in people under 35.
4. While it may not be possible to “eliminate all risk,” the risks associated with ETS are generally very low. For instance, office exposure (8hrs/day 250 days/yr) to ETS will generally result in a Relative Risk for lung cancer of less than 1.01 – that is, less than 1% of the base risk.

You forgot number 5. Carbon monoxide and hydrogen cynanide are good for your children. Yeah! Right!

Carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide are not present in sufficient quantities to cause any risk.

That is my problem. It is not a problem with children exposed to ETS. Lung cancer is virtually unknown in people under 35.

People have known that smoking is bad for years yet they continue to do it. And kids still do it to be "cool" or look more adult. Both stupid reasons to do anything
07:54 PM on 02/06/2012
My father smoked, and I have no doubt I would never have started if I wasn't exposed to it. Fortunately, I quit cold turkey (while living with a smoker) several years ago. I decided not only that I didn't want my son to be affected by my choice but that I also wanted to be around as long as possible for my child, and in order to do that I needed to make healthy choices.

If a parent, or any adult for that matter, smokes in an enclosed place with a child, he should be charged with battery and child endangerment. If a parent's cigarettes are more important than the kid's health, the parent shouldn't be raising the kid.

Why on earth is it necessary to provide "another" reason to stop smoking? If smokers have not received the message by now, it will never sink in. Are we spending gevernmental research dollars on this?

Anti-smoking advocates have zeroed in on cars because of research showing they're potentially more dangerous than smoke-filled bars and other less confined areas. - Yeah right do you really believe this, it is worse where you can open windows then where you are completely closed in - enough already!!! Give this whole anti smoking garbage a break you do not get reasons to invade peoples private spaces including their cars and last I checked parents can smoke around their kids if the choose too unless big brother plans to monitor the interior of our homes! This is going TOO FAR!

By the way, gorwing up years ago it took over two decades for me to meet someone (1 person) that had asthma, now everyone has it......really are we going to keep blaming smoking? People are going to be very disappointed to learn that they did not avoid anything at all by avoiding smoke later.
07:40 PM on 02/06/2012
You can smoke yourself to death if you wish. But you have no right to force others, especially children who don't have the option of saying no, to breathe that smoke. Even with windows open, I guarantee you are going to be affected because you still exit that vehicle smelling like an ashtray.
