McDonald's Shamrock Shake: Elusive St. Patrick's-Themed Drink Returns [UPDATED]

First Posted: 02/ 6/2012 10:37 am Updated: 02/ 8/2012 2:21 pm

McDonald's has succeeded in creating a cult following around at least two of its limited time offers: the McRib and the Shamrock Shake. The McRib returned nationally for three weeks in November. The Shamrock Shake always re-appears before St. Patrick's Day, but no one knows which locations will carry it. As of a few days ago, early reports have started to come in, declaring that the shake is back for 2012.

For those not familiar with the concoction, the Shamrock Shake is a minty vanilla milkshake that started being served in 1970. In the past few years, discussions about a recipe change have circulated, though the shake's in-demand status remains unthreatened.

For those seeking out the green beverage, the website ShamrockShake.com keeps a running list of locations where the shake has been spotted. One can also lookup an address to find the closest Shamrock Shake.

UPDATE: The Shamrock Shake is now NATIONWIDE for the first time, reports CNN. It is currently available at every one of McDonald's 14,000 U.S. restaurants

Wow!!! GROOSSS! You should checkout Tosca Reno's Eat-Clean, Green Shamrock Shake. The only ingredients are whole, clean, natural foods http://www.toscareno.com/2013/03/12/green-detox-shamrock-harlem-shake/#.UUdSyRlXtT4

I have been drinking Shamrock Shakes at McDonald's for over 30 years now. Every year I make it a point to get them in March. This is the first year I actually bought one, took one sip, and threw it away. Now that McDonald's thinks they're a gourmet coffee house....they feel the need to ruin everything. The original McDonald's shamrock shake doesn't taste anything like the one they're serving this year. The recipe is completely different, the mint flavor is terrible and tastes cheap, it shouldn't have whip cream or a cherry on it. It's not even blended correctly anymore. McDonald's has completely sold out to the masses and it's appalling. Even www.shamrockshake.com is different now that everyone thinks they know what a shamrock shake tastes like. I loved that site much more...before McDonald's decided to mass produce this false impersonation of the genuine Shamrock Shake.

We never eat fast food but will definitely be indulging in at least of few Shamrock shakes while they're available. Brings back those memories of a care free childhood!

I have to admit that I really LOVED the Shamrock Shake. I am ecstatic that after all these years, I will finally again be able to pull up to the drive-thru at the golden arches and be able to order this delicious concoction. In the early 90's, they had a sandwich called the McDLT. It came in a two-compartment styrofoam container. The burger was grilled and placed on top of the bottom half of a bun (one one side of the container). The other side of the container had lettuce, tomato and cheese (which was cold) and placed on top of the other half of the bun. It was DELICIOUS. Maybe one day they will bring back the McDLT. The McRib was quite delicious too. I'm gettin hungry !

The shake is unhealthy as all of their food is!

Of course it is, but it's a once a year treat. It's not like if you get a shamrock shake, that means you'll drink milkshakes every day.

Actually, you're right.

If I could dip my McRib into the Shamrock shake, then I would be living. Then die 4 or 5 seconds later.
