Chun Chun, 15-Pound Baby, Sets Record As China's Heaviest Newborn (VIDEO)

15 Pound Baby China

A 15.5-pound baby born in the city of Xinxiang in China's Henan Province has set the record for the heaviest baby born in China, the Times of India reports.

Chun Chun was born in a caesarean section which lasted around 20 minutes on Saturday.

Both the mother and baby boy are doing fine, according to doctors who spoke with the Chinese newspaper Dahe Daily.

According to the Sun, mother Wang Yujuan, 29, told local reporters her pregnancy with the boy felt different than her pregnancy with Chun Chun's big sister, now 6 years old, who weighed 8.8 pounds at birth.

"I clearly felt that my body was more clumsy than when I had been pregnant with my daughter. My belly was bigger than it was then," Wang said, according to the Sun. "I guessed the baby would be between ten and 11 pounds. I never expected to hear that he weighs 15.5 pounds."

For the title of China's heaviest newborn, Chun Chun edged out three other babies born between 2008 and 2010, all of whom weighed exactly 15.4 pounds.

In a study published last year in scientific journal The Lancet, researchers set out to determine what causes high birth weight.

While they discovered that the baby's genes, or genes shared between mother and child, certainly contribute to high birth weight, the chance a baby will weigh more at birth is greatly increased if the mother gains excessive weight during pregnancy.

The study defined high birth weight as 8.8 pounds or heavier.

The heaviest birth listed by Guinness World Records belongs to a baby boy born in 1879 in Ohio, who weighed 23 pounds 12 ounces at birth and whose mother was said to be a "giantess." Unfortunately, the baby died 11 hours after birth.

My second brother was just over 12 lbs. He was so huge! My mom had no medical problems during the pregnancy and gained a health amount of weight. We had a couple news teams at the hospital taking pics of him (this was in Germany). I can't imagine 15 lb 7 oz. Wow. My brother is now 6' and 155 lbs soaking wet at age 20. Picky eater. Far from my dad's dreams of him becoming a linebacker lol.

You mean Sumo wrestler? I don't think they play basketball in China since the average height is probably only 5' 6"

1st, it doesn't matter if the average height is low, only the height of individual players relative to each other.

2nd, you're misinformed. Northern chinese are frequently very tall.

Hey, it isn't always diabetes or massive weight gain or giantism on the part of the mother. I am 5'1", medium boned, not obese, and only gained 23 pounds during my first pregnancy...and my son was 10 pounds and 22.5 inches long. He was enormous! I ate healthy foods, exercised, worked full time, and didn't drink or smoke. Both my sons were delivered by c-section...I physically am unable to deliver even a small baby. I gained 20 pounds with my second, and he was 7 pounds 11 ounces, and 22.5 inches long, and also perfectly healthy.
My cousin, who is only 4'11", and who gained only about 25 pounds during her first pregnancy, had a 12 pound girl.Go figure. They're both healthy, and neither is obese. No hormones for any of us. I think a lot of the "small baby syndrome" has more to do with bad habits on the part of mothers (smoking and drinking and junk food) and the misconception that you have to gain enormous amounts of weight to have a larger newborn. Not so. I worked with two women who smoked during their pregnancies, ate hugely, gained 65 and 75 pounds respectively...and had 4.8 and 4 pound full-term babies, respectively...both with respiratory problems. Just something to think about...

It's true. Babies weighing more than 4,000 grams at birth are most definitely born to mothers with undiagnosed gestational (and sometimes Type 1 or Type 2) diabetes. Macrosomic babies are predisposed to obesity, diabetes, and other health problems because of the poor nutrition of the mothers. China doesn't exactly have the best healthcare system in the world, so I'm sure this baby's mother has no idea what the result of her rice-induced diabetes will do to her child/children, but I am happy that at least in the U.S. women receive nutrition counseling and are followed throughout pregnancy.

Who knows how this baby got this big or if it's even healthy? It's unlikely anything in this story other than the record weight of the baby is completely true. Honesty is not the hallmark of the Chinese press corps.

A friend of mine, a nurse, when she hears of a large baby always says, "diabetes."
Was the mother diabetic? What away to start life.
