Duane Jackson, Vendor Who Alerted Police To Times Square Bomb, Is Running For Congress

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A Times Square street vendor who alerted police to an attempted car bombing in 2010 said Tuesday that he is running for Congress.

Duane Jackson said his brush with terrorism and celebrity taught him that it made sense to get involved.

"It was kind of an epiphany for me," he said. "I had a call from President (Barack) Obama. I had people from all over the world come and thank me for, you know, seeing something and saying something. I can tell people, especially young people and people in the minority communities, it's OK to get involved in the running of this country."

The 59-year-old Jackson is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Nan Hayworth in his home district north of New York City.

A Navy veteran, Jackson said he has 15 years of experience in city planning and housing, including posts with New York City's education and housing departments.

His last position "wasn't a good fit," he said, and his involvement in veterans' affairs led him into vending.

Jackson said he learned about a law entitling disabled veterans to vend on any street, so he was able to quickly get his vending license. He suffered a non-combat back injury while aboard a ship in the Pacific during Vietnam.

He sees his years as a vendor as "small-business experience." He said he'll keep working in Times Square two days a week.

On May 1, 2010, Jackson was hawking handbags when he and another vendor spotted an SUV, idling and abandoned, in a no-parking zone near the Broadway theater showing "The Lion King." They notified police as the vehicle started to smoke, and inside was a potentially powerful propane-and-gasoline bomb that authorities said might have begun to detonate but did not explode.

Obama called Jackson to thank him.

Self-proclaimed terrorist Faisal Shahzad admitted plotting to set off the bomb and was sent to prison for life.

Jackson's campaign for Congress was first reported in The Journal News.

Jackson, married with two children, lives in Buchanan, home of the Indian Point nuclear plants. He said he favors new 20-year licenses for the plants so that the region will have time to transition to new power sources.

He said Republicans, and Hayworth in particular, "are out of touch with the voters in the Hudson Valley."

A call to Hayworth's office was not immediately returned.

Jackson said he will probably make a formal announcement of his candidacy this week in Buchanan. His campaign has a website and a phone number for donors to call. At least three other Democrats are in the race.

"I'm not going to have $200,000 for the primary," Jackson said. "But I'm an ordinary guy, and I think I can get out the Democratic base."

Below is a reel from Jackson's campaign website. Go to 2:15 for info on the thwarted Times Square truck bomb.

I can understand Mr. Jackson's frustrations with the current Congresswoman Hayworth. He makes the 6th Democrat to come forward in the 19th. Hayworth has had a dismal performance here and her actions after Irene have not served her well. Even her fellow Republicans in the Valley have voiced frustration with her talk of insisting on matching cuts in exchange for FEMA money. I live here in the 19th and we still haven't seen much from her.

Hayworth really only represents her husband and his medical practice, the largest in the area. She's even worse than Sue Kelly. I also live in the 19th and am just hoping that a smart, viable candidate can be found. So far, none of the six really have a good resume for the position. Though any resume would be better than Hayworth's. As Rteefact noted, Hayworth is a lock step Tea Partier, completely out of touch with the people of the 19th.

I'm an ultra-Conservative. The Republicans haven't been conservative enough for my tastes in quite some time (that's why I'm registered with the NY State Conservative Party). But, all of that being said, since I see little difference between the two main parties, I'd vote for Mr. Jackson in a heartbeat.

A Vietnam vet... check. A working man, and an entrepreneur to boot... check. Not a professional politician... check. Does the right thing at the right time... check.

Sounds like a better choice than we get from the party bosses.

This man is a veteran that believes republicans are out of touch, and reports that his campaign will not have $200,000 for the upcoming primary. He states he is an ordinary guy, and that it's okay to get involved in the running of this country. Essentially, what he wants to do is serve. I believe if he was here in Michigan, he'd have my vote.

Oh Lord! another "Joe the Plummer"... I wish these people would have some respect for America and understand that elected officials should be educated people who know what they are doing.

The reason we are in the mess we are in is due to the so called educated people who know what they are doing. It is about time to send them all packing and put in some ordinary everyday Americans. Some of the most inteligent people of the last century have not had degrees for an educational establishment. I do not have one of those precious college degrees, but am more succesful than most people with degrees in this country (one of the evil 1%ers).

Mr. Jackson is in fact a college graduate who was an urban planner earlier in his life. Learn the facts before you condemn or judge. Indeed, Hayworth is an alleged doctor and she's got to be even worse than Sue Kelly, if you can even imagine that! There are at least 4 Democrats who have come forward to challenge HAyworth. I hope that one of them can prevail. We in the 19th are without true representation in Washington.

The Republikon Attack Apparatus ($139.99 at Walmart with coupon) will attempt to eviscerate Mr. Jackson's past. His links to Jesse Jackson and Michael Jackson will be explored in detail, and rumors that he his none other than Samuel L. Jackson will be echoed by Fox News.

I'm completely serious here when I say this, people: companies are flocking towards Romney because they understand what Obama's been up to. He's never, ever been on their side. He's always been trying to stir up controversy and anger that would make complacent people get out there and create change - that is how community organizers do it, they build up hope and hunger for change, but they know people need to be angry before they'll get up and take their government back. In 2008, Obama set something in motion that led to all of the furor over the banks and their taxes - he literally sabotaged them by giving them rope to hang themselves, and then used that action as a way to gently nudge people into doing their own research into what companies have been up to. In other words, he's been starting a revolution and giving us a clear target as to who we're fighting against and who's working for them. It came out (though with literally ZERO coverage) that MLK Jr's murder had government and corporate players involved because he was organizing a massive march of the poor to basically occupy washington until the government abolished poverty, but since that requires a drastic redistribution of wealth, he had to go. I literally fear for this President.

I'm very happy that he noticed, and informed the proper authorities about the bomb. That being said, that act doesn't necessarily make him qualified for Congress. What the Dems need to be sure of, is that he's not another Alvin Greene.
04:05 PM on 02/07/2012
What makes any person qualified? Being rich? If he genuinely wants to serve and cares about doing well by his constituents I'll take him over some of those other clowns in Congress.

Greene was a plant and we all know it. To this day no one knows where he got the money to even register for the primary. Notice how after he lost he was never mentioned again. That was one of the most corrupt and disgusting displays of right wing underhandedness I have ever witnessed. But, just listening to this man speak we can see he is no Alvin Greene.

New York doesn't have the Death penalty. We did, but some liberals managed to have it declared "inhumane" or something like that. We don't have a big enough Republican presence to get it passed again. CT has one but they never use it, I don't know if they tried him in Fed court since he crossed a state line but they should have gone for it. The problem though is that it's very hard to get a conviction on that, so they didn't want to take a chance. Or he may have taken a plea, in that case noone will do that if it's for death.

He was tried and convicted in Federal Court.Shahzad is currently serving his life sentence at ADX Florence, a supermax facility where the most dangerous inmates in the federal prison system are held. It is part of the Florence Federal Correctional Complex in Colorado.

Connecticut recently imposed the death penalty on the two men who broke into the home of the Petit family and raped and murdered Mrs. Petit and her two daughters. We in New York realize that there are few crimes that call for a person's life. While this heinous crime committed in Connecticut arguably does reach that threshhold, we New Yorkers are more civilized. Anyway, no one was even injured in that crime, so why kill someone after the fact?

What you need to remember is that even though he intended to kill hundreds of people, he didn't. As a result he never would have been sentenced to death even if we had the death penalty; but life is appropriate. BY THE WAY "Lengua99" is wrong about why we don't have the death penalty. It has been ruled to be against the state constitution since 2004. As the constitution has not to date been amended with regards to the death penalty its still on the books but not used.
